When you have received an email that contains attachments you are able to save the attachment(s) to a Document library in a site that belongs to a Team. This is how it is done today:

  1. Click the arrow to the right of the attached file
  2. Select upload
  3. Select the site you want to save the attached file to
  4. Done.

Now the attachment is saved to the Document Library but who wants to save all documents to root level in a document library? This leads to the fact that when you are in a channel in a team and clicking on files, you will not see the file in the folder belonging to the channel.

Instead, once you have received an email that contains attachments that you want to save to a folder / channel in a site belonging to a team, you should be able to do the following in Outlook:

  1. Click the arrow to the right of the attached file
  2. Select upload
  3. Select the site you want to save the attached file to
  4. Select the channel / folder to which the attachment is to be placed

Now we are talking usability. To me, this is an obvious feature that adds value to users and minimizes the number of clicks and manual routines. Here is an entry (from 2016) in UserVoice where You can vote for this functionality.

I agree, however in the meantime there are a couple Outlook add-in's that will let you easily upload files to the channels and supports metadata once we get the SharePoint files tab UI.

I use OnePlaceMail save to sharepoint add-in. works great. At least until they get this feature finished out, the upload is a new thing, so they probably will expand it hopefully next step to include folders.
Hi Magnus

I agree with the sentiment as well.

I would also suggest a thought for a workaround being to sync the SharePoint document libraries with your device via OneDrive for Business.

Once the files are saved locally (available by Windows File Explorer) and synced with the cloud, you can Save As the attachments from Outlook and drop them in the desired location which will then be synced online.

Obviously not idea so Microsoft need to work on a good solution asap. And I've voted via the link you have provided.

Fingers crossed!

Cheers
Damien

Thank you Christopher for the OnePlaceMail tip. I'll take a closer look at it.

I have tested/used various plugins over the last few years, and many of them "do the job" for me, however, the optimum is to avoid using third party tools that end users need to configure to a greater or lesser extent. I hope, for our end users, that this will soon be standard functionality in Outlook, so their working days will be even easier. :)

Regards, Magnus

Hi Damien! Thank you for your vote and Workaround tip.

Yes, I'm aware of the ability to sync document libraries, then save the files to them locally, but it also has some disadvantages. For example, if you use Teams for Project Management and you are a member of a large number of teams that, in turn, contain many documents, it can quickly become a challenge with local storage capacity. This can certainly be managed with selective synchronization, but regardless, I think it's the default functionality in Outlook that is the key to success here.

Lets continue keeping our fingers crossed and hope it helps! :)

Yeah but the addin model for office 365 makes it so easy not much of an issues. It’s click store click add in and go.

Anyway to follow up on the sync thing. Files on demand works great in that case because you can sync the folders without actually syncing the files to your computer. However the downside everyone has to be running Windows 10 and current build ;).
Hi Magnus/Chris

I agree on both fronts.

It can be a challenge to sync when you have heaps of files that can eat up space and in those cases I would use OneDrive's ability (as of Windows 10 build 1709 I recall) to delete disused files to free up space via 'Available on this device'.

Any files or folders that I don't want to store on my device, I can leave on the cloud (Free up space option in OneDrive) and access it later via the sync folder if I need to do some work, which I consider to be a good option as well.

But as you say, it's not a solution and it only provides a workaround to the email attachment issue until Microsoft release new functionality.

The more votes for this feature, the better!

Cheers
Damien

P.S. I'm not sure running the latest version/build of Windows is necessarily a bad thing. It's a heap better than Windows 8!

Good Morning,

Can I save an email with the attachment in MS Teams?

Thank you,

@USER_CS Yes You can.

You can copy the email of a channel in a Team and then go back to Outlook and forward the email to that address.

What is even better is that it will soon be rolled out a new integration between Outlook and Teams. This will make it much easier to do this directly from the Outlook client. You can read more about it here:
"Easily manage conversations, tasks, and files from other Microsoft 365 apps within Teams"

When I click "Upload," only thing I see is my Onedrive folder. Is there a way that I can save my files directly from Outlook to Teams?

@Magnus Goksøyr

@Somy-Ryu

I have the same problem - was there an answer to this?

Coming soon as a standard feature in Outlook. See previous post in this thread.

@Magnus Goksøyr Is it possible to automatically upload an attachment, based on email subject, to a specific teams folder using Mircrosoft Flow / Power Automate?

For instance, if the subject matches "x", automatically place that file in the

Sharepoint folder listed in the files section of a particular team.

@DigitalJohn I don't have an answer but this was something that I was starting to investigate prior to finding this thread online. Would love to hear if someone has done something like this...

@TonaHunsucker According to Microsoft 365 Roadmap it should be here now but i have not gotten it yet. ShareToTeams.JPG

@Magnus Goksøyr Hello Magnus, this is something I've been waiting for. But just as the 'Skype Consumer' roll-out was reverted to the development phase (got a confirmation from Microsoft yesterday) it's possible the 'Teams-Outlook Email Integrations' could also have been affected by similar "circumstances". You never know though, sometimes it's just there. Like the 'AllowEngagementReport' which was said to be disabled by default, was actually enabled by default the other day in our tenant.

Hi, thanks for this. My issue is that after I click the arrow to the right of the attachment in outlook, I can't see all of the groups that I manage in Teams. I can see three groups that I'm a member of, but not the one that I created. Perhaps I need to set a permission to allow file upload from Outlook. Any ideas?

@Magnus Goksøyr

@patrickmaki I have the same issue. Only some of the Groups I'm a member will appear.
