Well, technically if you want/need to preserve it indefinitely, you best put the Group/Team on hold. Otherwise it might be possible to delete it, by mistake or deliberately. But yes, as it's stored as part of the Group, there are no limits on it, that we know of.

Hi all. I have just returned from holiday, am looking at my 'Chat' in Teams and my old Chats have definitely dissapeared. To be clear these are Chats, rather than conversations within a Team.
Is there any clarification of how long these chats are retained for?

Have you noticed that in chats there is a Recent option:
This would indicate that there is also a not recent view of the chats. However this options doesn't seem to be there.
Then I tried to search for one of the people that I had a chat with and the older conversations came up.
So it looks like by default you only see the last 2 weeks, but search shows all.

Yes I did notice this, but couldn't see a way of seeing 'non-recent' chats. If I do a search it just seems to return results from all conversations and I can't filter down to chats. Do you get the same?

Yes, the same here.
It is probably worth upvoting this uservoice:

You should see the last 4 weeks of "Active Conversations" - that is if there is constant posting in channel you will see the last 4 weeks of that thread in the channel. However, I am noticing this is not the case. It is more like 24 hours of history is being kept. In one case I noticed that threads were missing from the same 24 hour period. If you searched for them by username or by text in the thread you would find the conversation but it was definitely missing when just viewing in the normal channel view by scrolling up to see the history.
I've opened a ticket with PSS and they have confirmed this is an issue with multiple tenants but have not given an ETA to resolve it. Will post again here as I get further info.

Has anyone come across a definitive answer for this retention in chat history and in channel conversations?

Microsoft has released the policy to set the chat history.
