I see that there are groups that are created when you make a team, and if a Team is created that the organization doesn't want I can add an administrator as an owner and then delete that Team, but is there a way to lock down who can make Teams in the first place?

So pretty much you restrict group creation for Office 365, and then by default you restrict Team creation? It would be nice if there was a security setting just for Teams outside of Office 365 in general, or a setting in the Teams settings where you could turn on a Teams creation group to manage this.

You may want to Submit your suggestion to the User Voice site so that others can vote on it.

If we will able to get simple and pretty straight forward restriction option in Microsoft Teams instead of power shell or extra portals. where we can Restrict Team member to create NEW TEAM without ADMIN permission or restrict him on Channel including channel chat and data. so it will be great.

Hi.. I totally agree with your comments.. we are a school and allowing anyone and everyone to create Team Sites is asking for disaster..

There will be no manageability on what has been created with no accountability whatsoever.. Also if we end up with a disgruntled employee , they would be able to just delete a site and if not on top of this could be to late to get files back.

I know we have the recycling bin but the creator of the team site can delete this also..

Currently in conversation with Microsoft to do what has been mentioned in the link .. but no  luck to date.

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Manage-who-can-create-Office-365-Groups-4c46c8cb-17d0-44b5-...

I think once again Microsoft have missed a basic fundamental requirement that is needed in the real world out there..

i'm curious, after you follow the instructions at that link, what else is needed in your school system to provide the desired controls?

@Martina Gromhad a great session on Group management at Ignite that may be of interest https://myignite.microsoft.com/sessions/53452?source=sessions

Hi..

Spoke to Microsoft Support and it seems following the instructions on a Windows 7 desktop did not work for us .. Using a Windows 10 desktop and following the steps in Powershell everything worked fine and now I only have a few select users who can create Teams.. exactly what I wanted..

But as to why I was able to setup on Windows 10 and not in windows 7 is a mystery ..

Please on a side note.. we are at the very early stages of deploying Teams and was wondering if there was a way of notifying all team members in a channel if something has been edited . i.e send a notification via email to all members if something has been edited i.e. in a conversation or a file amended . As currently its a struggle requesting all users to make sure Teams is accessed on a regular basis.

Thanks in advance

In regards to your alerting question, keep in mind that the files that are being edited are stored in another file repository, typically a SharePoint doc library, (but can be in other systems (box, dropbox, etc). Each of those file repositories can be configured to send Alerts, in a SP Doc Library, each user can enable their own alerts or the site owner can do this). Another option is to set up a Microsoft Flow to send out alerts.

Within Teams, each user can click on their Profile picture, choose settings and then activate Notifications but these are focused on activities in Teams and don't include file editing per se.

Is there any way to configure this without subscribing to/using Azure AD?

The article referenced lists that you cannot create teams in the Office 365 admin center. How would an administrator create teams after that? Would this be done through the Microsoft Teams Application, or some other mechanism, such as PowerShell?

Yeah what he said. We shutdown user's ability to create Teams Willy Nelly, but now how do I admin the Team creation? Or do I have to give permission to every Tom, **bleep** and Henrietta that wants to make a Team and then rescind it when they are done? There is got to be a better way.

You create a security group in which you carefully choose the members being able to create groups! Administrators, managers and so on

Been there done that but the upper ups want more control. Like Accounting wants a Team they send in a ticket and I create a Team for them and set an owner(s) at that point they are on their own. They way it works now is I'd have to pick a person in accounting and put them in the SG so they can make the group then remove them so they can't make any other groups. Not efficient and a bit of PIA.

@Siavash Hazini I'm curious (and not being sarcastic) if you have any other example outside of Teams where this functionality exists.  Do you have any examples?

It sounds like you want to be able to temporarily allow users to create O365 Groups/Teams.  In order to do that, you can grant them the capability and then remove it when they're done (i.e. add them to the security group which you've allowed to create O365 groups.

Other than automating their removal from that security group, I am struggling to think of ways other products have accomplished this.

@Jeremy Bradshaw The post is a million years old. But thanks for your reply.
