How can i test audio settings in Teams desktop?

There doesn't seem to be a way to configure audio/video settings until you're already connected to another user.

 

I'm having audio issues but can't find a way to configure the client to test before connecting to someone else.

 

In skype i would go to Tools, Audio settings. And can switch devices and test. I can't find that in Teams.

Hi Michael. I also hope the Microsoft Teams Team add a test feature. For now, I start a meeting in a channel and adjust my settings. It's not elegant, but it works. I plug my Surface into various different audio devices. So I often have to change them when in a Teams call. I also hope MS develop Teams to switch to an audio device if it's plugged in, in the same way Skype does.

Here we are in the middle of August and we still don't have this most basic of abilities.  I can't understand why Microsoft hasn't already added this.  

 

Also for folks that travel and use different equipment between office/road, it is desirable to review and set audio settings PRIOR to jumping on a call.

I have to adjust my Audio Output device EVERY SINGLE time I start a call because of this.

Should have Default Audio Settings at the application layer to configure this.

Teams uses your default conferencing device, if you go to your audio .. playback devices you can set the default conferencing device and the default conferencing device separately. It only becomes complex when you are connecting and disconnecting devices, but if you choose a default it will stay there.

I have found a solution - if you go into your system audio playback settings (right-click the speaker icon in your systray) and set your headset as the "default communication device" then Teams will pick up on that and always default to it automatically. I did that once at work for my headset there, and then again at home for the one I use at home - so now wherever I'm at it automatically has the right device selected.

I will definitely do this but I think the problem is that some of us may have to change devices mid-call, creating a definite issue during the call. Having the app follow the new connected device or at least ask if you want to use it as others apps do is ideal.

if you click profile photo in Teams -> settings ->devices, you can check and test your camera and set the audiodevice and microphone! As said before you can start a meet now and also check your settings from the cogwheel up to the right!

Yes, you can set microphone but NO, you cannot TEST microphone. The video is tested by seeing oneself on screen, but there is no equivalent audio feedback.

 

It is ridiculous that audio settings cannot be confirmed in advance.

We spend the first 5-10 minutes of most Microsoft Teams meetings with "we can't hear you at all" or "your microphone must be off" or "we can barely hear you can you turn up your volume" or "we can hear you but it's fuzzy" or "your sound is distorted". We waste a lot of time while some member(s) try switching to headset and back to laptop speakers, or toggling mute, or extending the opened volume control to try changing mixer settings.

 

Why is there no "echo" server we can connect to, speak to, and hear ourselves back? Rocket science???

I agree that this is a feature needed, I would like a option to test you audio when joining the meeting.

 

The Check Call Quality feature that we have in Skype for Business On-Prem is a good first step if we could have that in Teams. That feature never came to SfB Online so let's hope they create it for Teams.

 

There is a uservoice for this feature and currently Microsoft have it listed as "On the Backlog" so if you want this feature go in and vote for it and tell your friends and colleagues.

Considering all that Artificial Intelligence, bots AND the existing Echo service for Skype - WOW, this surely needs to stay on the backlog for months more. Way to complicated for Microsoft apparently!

Okey this is not a good solution but it is at least something. If you have a Skype for Business On-Prem server @Tom Arbuthnot posted a "hack" that you can do.

Unfortunately though, you can only do this in the desktop version of teams.

@Linus Cansby Do you know a way to disabled the functionality completely. Right now the option is "greyed out" which confuse users in SfBO. I can't see any policy that handle this

No, I don't think there is anyway to hide it from the client. Since the user is a SfBO there is not test service there. The SfBO user can use a the server test service if in a Skype Hybrid setup or use the Skype Consumer test service echo123.

Hi Steven - this has not been my experience with the Mac version. My OS (10.14.03) recognises my microphone connected via an external USB Audio device (Komplete Audio 6). This mic/device is recognised in ALL applications (Adobe Audition, Facetime, Skype) .... but not Teams. Teams is sadly lacking the audio test feature!!

@PKlammer, I think they may have added the feature you're requesting!  After clicking on my photo and choosing Settings/Devices, I have the option for a "Test Call".  Within that test call, it allowed me to leave a message and then hear the playback - essentially testing my microphone.

Also it's easy to initate the test call from the "Search or type a command"  input field.
