We are migrating from SharePoint to Teams for our communication but we're missing the file check out/in facility we used to have in SharePoint. I know that it's SharePoint underneath and that you can drill down to gain access to the check out/in function but it's not intuitive and the file status is not visible within the Teams front end - the only clue that a file is checked out is when an upload fails because the file is "locked".

Would it be possible to expose the check out/in functionality within the standard Teams file tab? Thanks.

Hi Nick,

Have you looked to see if this is already on UserVoice (https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public). Also, I know it isn't using the built in Files tab, but have you looked into using a browser tab looking at the document library? This is what I've done where I need the "Full SharePoint experience"

Cheers,
Mike

Short answer: Teams document management is not currently providing the features you are used to in SPO so if you need features such as CheckIn / CheckOut, Metada, etc then you have to go to the underlying SPO site

Hi, thanks for the response, but that's the problem. Why bother using Teams if I need to go into a different product before I can begin editing a file?  The functionality is already there, it just needs to be exposed properly in Teams, hence my request.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't know about UserVoice so thanks for the suggestion. I've up-voted a few items related to file check out/in. Here's hoping!

Post them here I’ll add my vote as well cause thy really should have s matching feature set from SharePoint in Teams I hate having to tell folks to use the open in SHarepoint link to do sharing or version history.

Just started to explore Teams for an architect end customer. The lack of Check In / Out / Discard functionality is a massive shortcoming. Would also be useful to see when a file is checked out and by whom.

Big +1 for this functionality to be exposed in Teams instead of having to open the underlying Sharepoint.

It's coming in the next quarter last I heard, so any week now. Files tab will get SharePoint UI aka, you'll be able to see check-in/out etc. on your views.

Thanks Chris. That's awesome news.

Have a happy festive holiday.

an option in the meantime may be to create a library view that exposes the Checked Out column and then use that URL to add the folder as a tab > Web Site. I do agree with your ask though - it would be nice to have more of the SP functionality exposed via Teams.

Microsoft indicated at Ignite 2018 that a "full fidelity" SharePoint experience in the Files tab in Teams was coming, which presumably would expose the Check Out/In menu item from the document library context menu.

It was stated this was a "by end of 2018" but I haven't seen any recent updates about this (and presume it's slipped to Q1)

Yeah, during Teams AMA i caught on that they were looking at some feature that might make it into the first files release here in a few weeks, which tells me it's not going to be until a month or so from now.

Can’t wait for this to happen!! Been telling customers this is coming for ages now it seems :)

@Nick MilnerThe only reason you would do this in teams is to get around the sharepoint storage limits as each team site has 25tb of storage you can effectively move your file server to teams with out paying for additional share point storage . If you want to use the check in and out functionality you would direct your users to use the share share point team site to access the documents instead of through Teams. Teams will be adding the check in and out feature but its a fair way down on the road map.

Highlighted
You can not bypass the storage by using teams. The 25gb limit is a site limit. Not a quota limit. Every bit of that used file storage which is stored in the attached SharePoint site counts towards your tenant storage.

@Matt-Harding

I have no desire to workaround any file size limits.  My reason for wanting to check in/check out through teams is to be able to upload/download through teams without having to go to the SharePoint site and check in.  Which is exactly what I need to do today...  That 2nd step of also having to go to the SharePoint site after copying a file so colleagues can access/see it.

@Matt-Harding The assertion that I want to see Check Out/In surfaced in Teams so I can cheat a license limitation is bizarre (not to mention a non sequitur). I simply don't want people stamping all over other people's edits.

@Nick Milner

The thing with Teams is that the check it/out option don't go hand in hand with what Microsoft is trying to achieve with Teams. Teams is suppose to be a big open, real-time, transparent communication tool. Where real-time is the big thing here. With the option to be able to edit a document in real-time several people at the same time removes a lot of the function with check in/out. The only reason for a check in/out option now is if a person fells the need to edit an document by themselves and look everybody ells out.

Either way, there is another way to do it. If you chose to edit the document with the deskop application you can in the files menu chose to check out the document, removing the need for going to the sharepoint site.

Here is the uservoice link for requesting check in check out directly in Teams. I'm surprised it only has 80 votes. Definitely seems like an important feature to have: https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/31087639-file-check-in-out

With the files tab replacement coming, you'll have check-in / out most likely right in the files tab inside of Teams.
