I searched for this, but couldn't find anything on it. We have a folder structure we use for our projects with forms, etc. in them. If I drag and drop this folder structure into "Files" for a Channel it only drops in the files and not the folders the files are in. I have to open "Files" for that Channel in SharePoint, drag and drop those folders in the Channel I want them. I can go back to the Team Channel and the folders and files are there. Is this anyone else finding this out as well? Thanks, Ben

That's how it works for me as well. Teams treats files pretty flat. When you hover over with files it just save drag "files" here, not folders. May want to put uservoice up, but I think they are working on some updates to this files tab.

So the tab "Files" is taken quite literally then . Thanks Christopher.

least the upload mechanic currently is, it supports folders, guess you just have to do SharePoint like you said, or manually create folders to navigate and upload within the tab. Hopefully, they just change it to match SharePoints behavior.
I was able to migrate a ton of old files/folders to the files tabs with a 3rd party solution. We were retiring our on prem 2010 sp server that had a lot of data. We even migrated some file shares as well. Private message me if you want the name of the tool, it was not "cheap" but it made my life easier as the admin to move all of that to teams.
I know this isn't a permanent solution for what you are talking about but it may help some folks.

Not sure if this is related, but I can't move multiple files within Teams or OneDrive. To move or copy, I need to copy the files to my hard drive and then repost them. Then I can do multiple files in the O365 apps. Counterintuitive and sucks from a workflow view.

What worked for me was to do the following:
1. Open your Teams's File Directory in Sharepoint Online
2. In Sharepoint Online, use the function to "Open Site in Explorer"
3. Doing so will open up the Explorer View and then you can simply Drag and Drop your files over and still preserve the directories.

How do I open my Teams's File Directory in Sharepoint Online?

Open your teams open up the channel you want in my case general there is an option to open in sharepoint right next to new, upload, get link etc.

Hi Sean,

Not arguing the fact your's is a method that will work.

Consider a typically unsophisticated . One might suggest this is an uncommon process. I'd be surprised if any end user understands SPO and One Drive as a single entity.

My opinion is drag and drop must be available in Stream. It's already intuitive fsince Windows Explorer made its appeance.

You can also use "Sync" option after you click "Open in SharePoint" in FILES tab. See screenshots from the link.

Thanks @Fred Y you just saved me a lot of time! Glad this Thread was kept Alive.

@Ben Wilson

Adding to @SEAN CHEN 's instructions. Thank you Sean! You saved me hours of work!

Migrate folders and files from Windows Explorer to your MS Teams channel with folder hierarchy intact

1. In Teams, in the channel in which you want the folders and files, on the Files tab, near the top of the page, select Open in SharePoint.

Result: Your team's SharePoint page opens.

2. In SharePoint, near the top of the page, select Upload > Folder.

Result: Windows Explorer opens.

3. Choose the folder you want to copy, and select Upload. Confirm when prompted.

Result: The folder appears on the SharePoint page. You can actually check the progress of the upload if you catch it in time; look near the upper right-hand corner of the page. You'll know it's done when you see a time stamp under Modified.

4. Still in SharePoint, near the top of the page, select Sync.

Result: A dialog box appears asking if you want to open OneDrive. Select the Open Microsoft OneDrive button.

Result: Two boxes pop up that say Getting ready to sync and You are now syncing. You can close out the Getting ready to sync.

Task result: No confirmation dialog appeared. I closed SharePoint. Then, in Teams, I had to click out of the Teams channel and back into it, and then back into the Files tab to see my top level folder. I've not confirmed all 1,000+ files were brought over, but a random check of various files in the various folders confirms that the procedure worked.

@Scot Witt I actually didn't know that SharePoint and OneDrive were a single entity! Thank you for mentioning that. Between that fact and the instructions someone else has posted, I was able to successfully move 1,000+ files with folder structure intact and then write out the rest of the instructions for other end users.
