Dial Tone in Microsoft Teams Meeting

Brass Contributor

Hello Tech Community,

We are currently experiencing an issue where users are hearing a dial tone in a Microsoft Teams meeting. We are currently in Islands Mode and the default chat app for Office is Skype for Business, and the users use both applications.

We initially thought that the issue was due to users attempting to use call controls for Teams, therefore taking Skype into an off-hook state , causing that dial tone. However, one of our UC guys has said that this isn't in fact what is happening. When he either clicks the Teams toast or the join button from the calendar, the Teams meeting starts as usual, but Skype plays a dial tone, and he needs to exit the Skype app for the dial tone to stop.

This also seems to have coincided with a recent office application update.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,
Alex.

@amoller Avoid Island mode is the lesson, there a many problems like this.

For this also check the settings for your headset, there are settings for dialtones in them too. This is an example from Plantronics Hub.

@Linus Cansby Unfortunately it is not as simple as avoiding Islands Mode.

Skype for Business is causing the dial-tone, as when exited it stops.

Hi, Did you identify the cause of this issue, we are experiencing the same problem, usually with the first call of each day. We have a call open with MS for it, but as we cannot systematically recreate the problem troubleshooting is proving difficult.

Cheers

This is likely being triggered by your headset. Try if you can reproduce this issue with audio-jack headset, not the USB or wireless.

My customer is using Jabra Evolve 65 headsets with Jabra Direct software installed on all Windows 10 client. After disabling "Softphone Integration (Bluetooth)" in Jabra Direct issue is resolved.

@amoller - we have same issue.  when we go on Teams call, we often get dial tone which seems to be linked to Skype.  If we close down Skype completely it seems to go.

This is a known issue when Skype and Teams are simultaneously being used.

For some users that tried to turn off the Dial Tone on Windows it worked.

Try to follow the steps below to check if it will fix the issue:

1. Search Sound in the Windows search box and click to access.

2. Click Sounds tab.

3. Under Program Events, scroll your mouse and select Dial Tone under Skype for Business.

4. Switch the Sounds to None.

5. Click Apply and then OK.

If you have an issue with dial tone on MS Teams follow the steps described below:

  1. In MS Teams click on your picture or the icon with your initials at the top menu bar.

  2. Select Check for updates option to ensure you have the newest version of MS Teams.

  3. Update sound settings on PC:

  • Go to menu Start

  • In the search field write Sound settings and click on Enter button

  • In the Sound window under Input click on Device properties

  • Under Related settings click on Additional device properties

  • In Headset Microphone Properties window select Advanced tab

  • Under Exclusion Mode uncheck Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device option

  • Click on Apply and OK buttons

To disable dial tone on Skype for Business follow the steps described below:

  1. On your PC, go to menu Start.

  2. In the search field write Control panel and click on Enter button.

  3. In Control panel window select Sound option.

  4. In Sound window select Sounds tab.

  5. Under Program Events scroll down to Skype for Business.

  6. Click on Dial tone.

  7. Under Sounds select None from drop-down list.

  8. Click on Apply and OK buttons.

I actually tested relaunching Skype after exited and the dial-tone comes back. Seems to be the cause to me.

The final solution for this issue in our environment was to change the value on the registry key  EnableTeamsHIDInterop for the users in Island Mode via Policy. The value was changed to 1.

@Linus Cansby I found that uninstalling the plantronics hub software resolved the dial tone and hang up tone that I was experiencing during team calls.
