Desktop Teams doesn't accept registered user account

Hi!

I have been helping a family member getting their Teams up to speed. There is this fascinating problem that as we completed the registering their Microsoft account for Teams, the desktop version of Teams still refuses to allow their Microsoft account to access teams. The warning and a link back to the browser to register the account for Teams appears, whilst in either Edge or Chrome the account can use browser-version-Teams just fine.

This is a very strange problem that I have been unable to resolve with the run-of-the-mill solutions (log out and log back in or re-starting the computer). Does anyone have a suggestion how to get he desktop version of Teams to accept my family members registered account?
