Hi Community,

I love Teams but there is an annoying issue that prevents me from working on it systematically and effectively at the moment.

When I try copy & paste a PowerPoint slide from a .ppt file offline (saved in my desktop) to an open .ppt file in I'm editing in Teams, the slide will be pasted as a picture in the last existing slide of the presentation, and not as a new slide which is what I need. This prevents me from copying stuff from presentations outside Teams to presentations in Teams.

Also, if that helps, copy&paste in Teams works only with the shortcuts for me (e.g. Ctrl +C, Ctrl + V etc.) as I get an error:

"your browser can't access the clipboard, so use these shortcuts"

everytime I try copy and paste something through the tab.

It is exactly same issue if I open the file in Teams on PowerPoint online.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

@antdimit sounds like you may be using Teams in the Browser, Try using the Teams application instead.

Hi Dean,

That's strange, as I have been using Teams on Desktop indeed (have never accessed that through the browser actually).

Any ideas?

@antdimsorry i misread your question. It seems you are using PowerPoint Online from Teams, try using the desktop version of PowerPoint instead. This will you give you more functionality.

@Dean Gross

I understand there are 3 edit options for .ppt files uploaded in Teams:

a) Edit in Teams
b) Edit in PowerPoint
c) Edit in PowerPoint Online

I get the issue and error I described above with options a) and c), and I get an "access denied" error when I try to use the desktop version of PowerPoint (option b) ).

Any ideas?

@antdimdo you have multiple accounts? it sounds like PowerPoint may be using a different account, to find out, open PowerPoint from your Start menu, then click on your name in the top right corner, see which account it is using. Use the Switch Account link to activate an account that has access to the Team

@Dean Gross thanks for suggestion, unfortunately the account showing is the one that indeed has got access to Teams. Just in case this adds any value, this is a corporate account as we are using a subscription package of Teams across my organisation

what happens if you open the file in PowerPoint Online and then click the Open in PowerPoint link?
Highlighted
I get an "access denied" message and it doesn't open
Highlighted
try opening PowerPoint, log out of the account and then log back in, then try opening the file again

@Dean Gross

Have just tried.

Same "access denied" error. And slide still pastes as image in Teams or PowerPoint Online

@antdimcan you open any other types of files, eg, word or excel in one of those applications?

Highlighted
@Dean Gross, yes I can open excel and word files normally. I can also use the copy/paste full functionality for these when editing in Teams

sorry, i'm out of ideas

Hi &antdim

You could sync the SharePoint library linked to the channel to your desktop and then copy it over that way

Hope that helps!

Hi @Christopher Hoard

Thanks for replying to me.

If I got it right, what you suggested is syncing the SharePoint Online library of this channel to my desktop and then copy/pasting in the .ppt file appearing in my OneDrive folder. This will then automatically sync with the Teams tab and update the content of the file there. Is that right?

If so, while I see that as a successful workaround, it still prevents my colleagues and myself working on the same document stored in our Teams file tab. I am part of a big organisation with hundreds of employees, and we have recently moved into Teams. One of the key benefits for us would be to be able to live-edit and work on the same document at the same time inside Teams, however due to the issue I have described we have been unable to do so.

Any ideas how we can fix this issue in my organisation, as it is not only myself having this problem at the moment?

Many thanks!

Hi @antdim

Yes, that is the workaround I would suggest if you can’t get the live editing functionality within Teams itself.

To note, several others can sync that SharePoint library so many can collaborate on the same same group of documents in the channel. Yet I completely get that if you work for a large org with thousands of users this isn’t ideal.

I would personally leverage the workaround whilst both raising a ticket to Microsoft to see if they have any further suggestions as well as raising it as a Teams Uservoice. To note that there is one already here for importing and merging slides from PowerPoint outside of Teams

https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/555103-public/suggestions/36132796-powerpoint-in-teams-n...

And there are several complaining how many bugs copy and paste has if you search on those terms. On a few of them Microsoft says they are actively working on it, but it could be some time before what you need is there.

Hope that answers your question

Best, Chris

Should be no reason you can’t work on the PowerPoint at the same time. It almost sounds like there is just something in the file itself from allowing coauthoring experience. When you edit with PowerPoint desktop client are you using a mordern up to date version of the client? Usually you can quickly tell by seeing auto save on the top left corner. Make sure this is turned on while editing the document. If this isn’t working I’m betting they document itself is having some issues.

After trying that I would try creating s new blank PowerPoint with a test slide and saving it. Then turn around and try editing in browser and then client and see if same issue occurs. Let me know after. Thanks!

Hi @Chris Webb

Thanks for your response - have followed your suggestions and there was some progress made.

I turned Autosave on (we're using Office 16 versions) and now I can open and edit documents with 'PowerPoint desktop edit' (previously I was getting an 'access denied' error and couldn't open to edit in desktop) and copy/paste works fine there.

I'm still facing issues with copying/pasting slides when editing in Teams or editing in PowerPoint Online. Again, I can only copy/paste through the clipboard, and slides would paste as pictures rather than as proper slides.

Thoughts?

It's most likely a browser copy and paste limitation. So using auto save and opening via client is going to be your best bet when it comes to copying and pasting slides.

The reason you were getting the error before, you were using a client that didn't support or have co-authoring turned on (Auto Save) and when viewing or trying to edit the files via Teams / Browser it puts a lock on those files for about 10 minutes so this is what was preventing you from opening the files without those options turned on.
