I'm looking for any information related to converting between team types, or migrating content between team types. In Microsoft Teams for EDU we have four options when creating a new team:

  • Classes
    • Teachers and students collaborating on group projects, assignments, and more.
  • PLCs
    • Educators collaborating within a professional learning community.
  • Staff Members
    • Staff leaders and staff members collaborating on school administration and development.
  • Anyone
    • Students and school employees collaborating in interest groups and clubs.

Some of our "Anyone" teams need to be converted to "Staff Members" teams, so that we can better use OneNote. For the Staff Members team, the OneNote tab includes a Collaboration Space, Content Library, and Private Notebooks, and includes the ability to create new sections. For the Anyone team, the OneNote tab only includes one section per channel, new sections cannot be created.

Is there a way to convert a Team between these types? If not, is there a way to migrate all Team content, including channels and their instant messages, to a new Team?

You can’t change team type. Functionality to create a new team based on an existing team is coming, but I doubt you will be able to migrate messages and notebook data any time soon.

Do you know if this functionality is already in use?

how i can do that please ?

I also need an option to modify the team type. Or options to create a new team based on an existing team. It would be nice to keep the current channels.

@Pabloe if what you're looking to do, is create a new Team using Staff as the type, but use an existing Team as a starting point, you can do that by Create Team using an existing Team as a template. You can select to bring over the current Channel structure and the current members if you'd like.

@Paul Lindsay

Creating the new Team based on a template of an old Team is still basically abandoning the old Team which is pretty disruptive unless I am missing something. I am assuming there is still no way to convert a Team or even add an existing staff notebook to a Team that is not in the Staff category. Thanks.

@Paul Lindsay that doesn't work. It will only let you choose an existing Team as a template of the same Team type.

@Paul Bedford

So unless something changes, we need to get rid of the old Team and create a new one.

@MLederer Very much looks like it, unfortunately.

Came here hoping for answers. But hey it will pass away some lock down hours creating all those Teams and Channels again from scratch, adding all the different people one by one, and transferring the resources they have. Not to mention creating an email alias and then set it as default for old Team, so you can give the existing and established address to the new (old) Team.

Was looking at this to lessen the pain - but wondering if Team Class / Staff / PLC / Other is a variable. https://www.jijitechnologies.com/blogs/create-teams-microsoft-teams-powershell

@Paul Bedford  which script form that page did you guys use?

The first one seems to have some probs..

I think these create normal teams  (the "Other"type out of the four) but in my institution, we wanted "Class" teams..

I have looked around for how to use "EDU_Class" but haven't found any information.
