Cannot share files in chat

Deleted
Not applicable

When trying to share files in a chat i see the message 'Sorry, you need OneDrive for Business for file sharing.' which is frustrating because i have OneDrive for business! The issue has only affected me and one other colleague and is not limited to the client as i am also unable to share files via teams online.

Any ideas on how to fix?

Very strange since the message is actually wrong: there is no dependence with ODFB...Teams is built on top of Group so it requires Exchange Online and SharePoint Online (for files) behind the scenes

Hi Matthew, this is a bug.  If you have OneDrive for Business enabled, then you should be able to share files in Chat.  SharePoint Online is required for file sharing in team conversations.   Please file a bug via the Feedback icon in the lower left in product, or via User Voice (http://aka.ms/teamspublicfeedback) so that we can triage accordingly.   Potentially you can try uninstalling Microsoft Teams and reinstall?

Juan, OneDrive is the backend of private chat.  You are correct that SharePoint backs files for team conversations.  Thank you for all of your posts supporting this Tech Community.  Much appreciated!

@Deleted, thank you for reporting the issue. This is definitely a bug. I will have someone reach out directly to you to troubleshoot and potentially get logs to help our debugging. It may take a couple weeks given the holidays.

In the meantime if you report an issue as Elaine mentioned we'll take a look.

Matthew,

I will send you a private message so we can further investigate this issue.  Thank you.

Was a solution to this bug found?  I'm having the exact same problem with one of our OS X systems running Teams.  I'd love to know the fix if it's available.

Solution

Go to Files > OneDrive area of the Teams App and then see if it resolves the issue (this sets the personal siteurl).  If not, please send me a personal message and we can further investigate your issue.

sorry, not sure if this is the correct way to let you know we are having the same issue?
Have the exact same issue. File uploads work fine in team chats but not in DMs and I get the same OneDrive not installed as the above users

Abbas,

Have you tried to Go to Files > OneDrive area of the Teams App and then see if it resolves the issue (this sets the personal siteurl).  If not, please send me a personal message and we can further investigate your issue.

Thanks- that did the trick

That definitely did the trick.

Wanted to give a quick update here folks - With your help, we identified an issue that was causing the majority of failures with sharing files in chats. Thank you for the assistance and confirming the fix.

We are still aware of an additonal issue affecting some users and are investigating. If you're having any issues with sharing in chats please let us know.

I have one user who is experiencing this issue. I have gone to Files -> OneDrive but that has not resolved the issue. Please let me know when we can work to get this user's issue corrected.

Hi Kyle,
We are still experiencing this issue with a small portion of our users. The Files Section > Teams tab workaround doesn't appear to work. Are there any other steps I can use to test on my side? Most users on OneDrive for Business or Next Gen client. I have additional info if needed.
Thank you,
Mike
Hi Kyle, we got issues with sharing in chat. Upload via paperclip and files in chat is not working. Screenshots do not show up...

We are also experieincing the issue.  It is occuring on a machine that has both a personal onedrive account and onedrive for business, if that information is helpful at all.

Hi everyone -- thanks for the feedback.

This is a known issue and we're working to fix. It happens to me too!

I will let you know once we identify and resolve the bug.

Several out of our team are experiencing this too. Do you have any updates?
