Can't access files in a group chat

When we are adding new users to a group chat, those users can't access previously shared files even if they are provided with access to the complete chat history. All users are on an O365 license. Is there something that could be done about it permissions- or settings-wise?

A few quick questions -

1.) Can those new added users see the files tab within the group chat?
2.) Do those new users have OneDrive for Business enabled?

Hmm! Havent actually tried checking access to files when adding a member to the group! Worth checking but you could think this would be shared to new members as well!
I just tried this and it does seem the already shared files doesn’t get shared to new group members! By just restating the file all members will have permission

that would be a yes to both questions. Our workaround is to upload another copy of the file.

 

I'm assuming the reason for the already-shared files in a chat not being accessible is related to the fact that the file is hosted on OneDrive for Business of the person sharing it instead of a SharePoint, like it would be if it was shared within a team channel.

@Toralf Ohme @Christopher Hoard hi - is this still the case? Unfortunately we just discovered this in a live demo where we expected Onedrive to manage the permissions of a new user being added. Much confusion when it didn't.

 

A common ad-hoc scenario we are trying to move off email

1. a number of users group-chat to draft a document

2. they then add a couple of reviewers with the expectation the file will be visible to them and the reviewers can contribute.

 

FAIL and messing about

 

 

 

We have a workflow similar to @Darrel Richardson and have the same inconvenience of having to re-upload the file after new members are added to a conversation.

 

I join my voice to ask for a solution of a user-transparent work-around.

@Christopher Hoard we've got a similar issue and a new user is unable to open files in chat.  You did ask if the user could see the files tab within the group chat.  What do we do if they can't please?
