Blur Background NOT available in Teams

Why would I not have Blur my background option on some machines and do on others?  I have read all the articles and asked on Twitter, but was directed here.  I can not find any information on why or what to do to enable it.  Some in our tenant so and others don't.  Same make, model, and purchase date on computers.

Try to do a log out and log in! Not just closing the teams client

That did not help.  I have logged onto other machines and it was there so it leads me to believe it is the machine.

I have read through that article several times.  My coworkers and I all have the exact same version and build of Windows.

That's odd that is' same machine some have and others do not. As adam said see if they have same version, if so sometimes patches come in without updating build numbers so always try to do the Update and give it a minute or so, then quit and restart Teams. Only other things I could think of is checking settings and making sure your default camera is set to the one you have available at the time of starting Teams up.

It's possible that some users have the latest build option and others don't, I've seen things available per user vs. per tenant in the past which seems odd to me but it is possible, however, usually this should be reflected in version number if that was the case.

For information, on my computer via the MS Teams client, I dont' have the blur option for video.....but If I switch to an another company (tenant), miracle the blur option is présent.

 

So, I think is tenant dependant, settings or feature avalibity...

 

If someone know which option...please let us know.

We were able to resolve the issue by updating the Teams app.  It failed but after several attempts, it worked.  Thank you!

This is still not available for me, yet is for my colleagues on same tenant. I am on latest version 1.2.00.1758 (Jan 21, 2019).

Do you have the same machine / hardware? Log off and On to Teams as well (it's not the same as restarting).

Thanks Chris. Some same hardware (i.e. Surface Pro 4). I've done login/out, re-install, etc. I've tried it on SP4, Thinkpad, Desktop. No avail.

I had the same issue, all colleagues' blur feature were working. We all have same version of Teams

It started working for me on one machine and not another. Same version. The inconsistency is a tad bizzare.

They are two places you can "blur" your background, one is at the first of joining conversation and the other during the meeting.

 

When you logged out and in, do you get either of these? the blur radio button or the eclipse?

According to this article by Tony Redmond, the PC graphics must support AVX2 for the blur-feature to work:

"The technology to perform face recognition to identify the person and understand where the background to be blurred begins and ends only runs on reasonably recent PC equipped with Advanced Vector Extension 2 (AVX2) graphics. AVX2 is what Teams uses to blur the background after it figures out where the user is."

 

"AVX2 is supported by PCs that have a post-Haswell chipset. Blurring works on my Surface Book 2, but doesn’t on my HP Envy 17 of 2014 vintage. Be aware that the CPU has some processing to do to locate a face and blur the background, so it can impact other work on the PC if you run a loaded system."

I recently shutdown my computer and did a little re-organizing of my computer desk. With that I unplugged all accessories and re-ran the wires.

 

Prior to all this Blur worked great, not the option doesn't show up. I have tried multiple of my computer's USB ports (both USB 3 and 2) and re-signed into Team multiple times and it will not show up.

 

Any ideas appreciated.

I have both Teams and Skype. (NOT skype for business)
Within Teams there is no Blur option, while in Skype there is!

(CPU is i7-3740QM, VGA is Quadro K3000M, webcam is Logitech Webcam 500)

Most of my colleauge's brand new notebook's has much lower CPU power than mine...
I really don't understand MS's decision about AVX2 requirement....

@JeffD1895 Could the this also be AVX2 requirement also explain why "show background effects" option is not available on some computers?

@SobeUK I expect the "show background effects" is just an extension of the blur background feature and would be blocked by the same requirement.

I think this is valid point,
My newer laptop works fine (integrated camera).
No blur on the older PC though. Older Logitech webcam.

Camera doesn't really have an effect, it's all based on CPU feature sets (Extensions). AVX used to be supported, but seems only AVX2 mostly works now. Not sure if this is intended or if we'll see AVX support added back in.

I don't want to be the Gamming solution one guy... But if your PC isn't supported you can get this one https://www.xsplit.com/vcam I used it for the stream before even the teams people has the idea to do the blur. With this one you can do Blur, images and event just remove your background and I've tested it and it works like a charm.

so it used to work for me on my Surface Go in MS teams with no issues, and it still works with Skype (not SfB), and even with xsplit... yet i wish Teams would bring the feature back and perhaps drop the HW dependency.

@Holly Lanham how do you update the app?  I do not have the option for the blur background on my computer.  How do I fix that?

Afetr few days, the system updated and now the blur option and background change is available

My desktop is an Intel i5 system from 2012.  It has AVX, not AVX2.  In March 2020, background blur was working.  Teams got updated and now there's no blur.  If it is AVX2 related, I don't understand was Microsoft had to make it their way or the highway.  Why not support both?  Why can't Teams just check for AVX2 and use it if available but otherwise fall back to the older one?  It would be better than nothing would it not?  Anyway, it's very disappointing.  Myself and other team members are not going to run out and buy new computers to fix MS Teams stupid issues.  Switching to another application is certainly a more attractive solution.  Microsoft better get it together quick or their customers will be soon disappearing.
