I'd like to automatically create a generic daily conversation at a specific time in a pre-existing channel for the team to report status into as replies. I would also like to tag the team for notification. Is this possible?

Not exactly. I'd like to track daily status for the team within a channel.
The best option that I've found so far is to send an auto-scheduled email to the channel first thing in the morning - then people can reply to the conversation (in MS Teams) with current status for the day. This appears to be possible with Outlook for Windows, but sadly not with Outlook for Mac (which I'm running)...

The best way to do this is with a Microsoft Flow. You can post directly to a channel in Teams but at this time @ mentioning is not supported. The Flow team is working on that. You can schedule the flow to execute at a particular time or when a particular condition is met and if you have the Flow app installed on your phone you'll get a push notification (if you want) when the Flow executed.
From your Office 365 menu go into Flow, Click on "Connectors" and search for Microsoft Teams. You'll see several templates you can edit to meet your scenario.

Thanks! Flow needs better marketing - I had no idea it even existed. I've been using IFTTT for some time now, but Flow appears to have true integration with internal MS Office applications.

I've noted that Sharepoint and Flow in general are incredibly unreliable. I've tried to incorporate Flow significantly where possible in Sharepoint lists etc but with each update - there are inevitable breakages. As a business, there is no way I will depend upon this service to handle critical functionality - it's just not reliable enough.

Our company is also interested in this feature and would like to request that the @ mention feature gets added. Is there a user voice link to vote for this feature that you can post for us to vote?

I'm interested in this, having never used Flow before. But I couldn't find a Flow to Teams with a scheduling option - am I missing something?
