Now in Public Preview: Quoted Reply for Desktop [web coming soon]

Microsoft

Description

Quoted reply allows you to select messages in chat that you want to include in your response. It is a great way to add context and clarity with who you are conversing with whether it is a recent message or from one earlier in the conversation.

Flighting status

This feature is now available to everyone in Public Preview.

How to enable

  • Use an existing chat or create a new one. One on one, group, or meeting chat.
  • Example
    • User 1 writes multiple messages to user 2
      • KaushalMehtaLYNC_5-1631899983561.png

    • User 2 opens the menu on the first message to use the reply feature
      • KaushalMehtaLYNC_6-1631900003221.png

    • User 2 writes their response with the reply embedded
      • KaushalMehtaLYNC_7-1631900077404.png

    • Final result after sending it.
      • KaushalMehtaLYNC_8-1631900089617.png

  • A useful function available is being able to click on the quoted portion of the message. Doing this will highlight the original message and also move the chat display to that location.
  • The reply option is also available as a quick action by right clicking on the message you want to quote.

Note: If you need information about enabling the public preview itself, see “Enable the public preview for Teams” below.

Enable your Teams client for the public preview

  1. First, IT admins need to set an update policy that turns on Show preview features. Learn how at Public preview in Microsoft Teams - Microsoft Teams | Microsoft Docs.
  2. Users then choose to join the public preview individually. See Get early access to new Teams features - Office Support (microsoft.com) for instructions.

So Jason is it rolling out on a limited basis within an organization? Our Org wide policy is "Follow Office Preview" however only a few of our users have the Teams preview features available. So I'm fielding calls from frustrated users (or maybe they are FOMO users).

@mleamingStratus Make sure the Office suit is in Current Channel (Preview) so you will be able to have Teams Public Preview when Follow Office Preview is set in the admin.

Is Public Preview activated? As I check, latest normal build and preview build are the same Version 1.4.00.26376 for both 64 and 32bit. The feature is rolling out for normal users, but it was said that all public preview users should have this activated already.
Thank you @Jason. Does make sense. In this case will just wait :) One more month should not make a difference ;) Have a great day

 @Jason_Schumacher

Is it possible to enable something for Admins where it shows what feature flags are enabled? We have observed where some users have had oddities with this and it's frustrating to troubleshoot.

Example - Users had to be moved to "Enabled" in teams from "Follow Channel". Users are in office preview channel in global office settings. After set to enabled, and enabled public preview from the teams client reply has showed up, but only temporarily for a few hours. What was observed when reply went missing.

  1. Reply missing
  2. Had user leave public preview, share to outlook still shown on message ellipses but no reply button.
  3. Then had user return to public preview status.
  4. No reply button after returning, as well as the "share to outlook" option is missing in preview.

There needs to be a better way to deal with feature flags. Maybe even show them in a type of flag menu where advanced users can toggle individual functionality on or off.

Understood, actually now it is available for me as well.

@EdwinCKClooks like it is available (macos) but you have to type space after > to enter quote mode. And it works with ENTER after >, but quoting after text will not work

So sad - it seems that something else has been broken because on Linux on any web browser I am facing an annoying issue with embedded images in chats where those images hide completely the text of the particular message :(

Can't do CTRL+A (select all) in chat "type a new message" field after update to v1.4.00.26376.

Shift + end or home works though.

Edit: Works after manually installing v1.4.00.28462, EXE x64. (link)

Does "before the end of October" still apply?
Company signed for and just released Office 365 and Teams for us but certainly won't opt in to Public Preview and, right now, only Windows users here can Reply and I, as many of my colleagues, am on Linux.
Thanks, in advance.

that's great, but posts can be replied to. But there's no option to reply to a specific person, only generally. It's not always possible to maintain the order of messages if you have 30 people in a channel
