Customizing MS Team Apps and Team Creation

Copper Contributor

Hi there,

My workplace would like to use MS Teams that we have with our Office 365 Tenant.

Even though we are part of the Education system, we are mostly focusing on pure business, so we don't need the Education Features that MS Teams for Education offers, such as:

  • Edu Class/Staff Notebooks
  • Creating other Teams like the Class/Staff

Is there a way to disable or turn those off to make it less confusing for users.

Hi @SKasai,

Have a look at this Uservoice

https://microsoftteams.uservoice.com/forums/599053-schools-and-universities/suggestions/33948928-rem...

Recommendation by Microsoft is to use the Anyone team. The Anyone Team does not include any add-ons and can be used in any way you like.

Like you say, important that other orgs in education are not forced to use class teams.

Hope that answers your question!

Sadly, this isn't really what is offered in this case.  When referencing the link they give:

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/choose-a-team-type-to-collaborate-in-microsoft-teams-0a9710...

The screen you get is:

So the Anyone isn't there anymore, and even when you create an Other Team, the ... section still shows:

Where we would like to hide or remove the Edu Class Notebook and the Edu Staff Notebook apps from the list as we don't do the actual 'teaching' that would need these apps.

Hmm ok!

How about applying an app permission policy to an other team through the Teams Admin Centre? So users can’t actually select and use these apps?

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/office365itpros.com/2019/08/12/using-teams-app-permission-policies/am...

Let me know if that works!

Unfortunately, tried that as well, the problem is, the Edu Class and Staff Notebooks are not an option you can block and when I tried OneNote, it didn't seem to block it from the list either.

The snippet I showed there, is even after the applied Team App policy.

Hmm. I see.

I guess if there is no team which exempts them and no policy which blocks them then it’s by design.

I would personally recommend

1.) Raising a ticket with Microsoft and see if they have an alternate solution
2.) Raise a uservoice for a new business team type which doesn’t include these features. There is an education part of the uservoice site
3.) Feedback through the desktop app
4.) Bring it up in the next AMA

An actual business tenant is assumed as not an option due to cost. I would vote on
the uservoice as I work with several organisations like yourselves who are in education but are not frontline classroom.

Hope those recommendations answer your question

Best, Chris
