What’s new in Teams Phones | December 2020

The Teams devices portfolio strives to give users options based on the space they use for work, the kind of collaboration they engage in, and their personal preferences for when and how they choose to get things done. We are constantly working to provide an intuitive and familiar experience for Teams on every device type, and this means carrying over the great features we have for meetings and calling into the phone experience as well. This month we’ve got some great updates that bring together the features users love in Teams meetings into the Teams phone app and more to keep users productive and secure.

1. Video Enhancements for Teams meetings: 3x3 Layout, together mode, gallery view and background blur

Teams phones now support a new video layout including 3x3 gallery view, large gallery view for more participants and Together Mode. Using 3x3, users can see the video feeds of up to 9 meetings participants at a time. For even larger meetings, enable large gallery view to show up to 49 participants. Teams phones will also support Together Mode, a revolutionary meeting experience where participants are transported to a virtual shared space.

No matter which style of meeting you select you can always enable background blur to reduce distractions and obscure any imagery found in a video setting.

2. Meet Now on Phones

Sometimes, the need to collaborate with a teammate can pop up at unscheduled times; it is easier to get clarity or talk through a few quick details with the new instant meeting feature on Teams phones. Users can select “meet now” in their calendar interface to easily start a meeting and add a participant.

3. Screensharing on Select Audio Phones

With this update some models of touch screen audio phones meeting the minimum hardware requirements will now allow user to see content that is being presented or shared by others during calls and meetings.

4. Spotlight

From a desktop client, presenters can pin an individual feed for all attendees to see during a Team meeting. The spotlighted video will be the main video the Teams phone user will see on their screen. For more information, see here.

5. Request to Speak

The hard mute functionality allows you to prevent attendees from unmuting themselves. This can be switched on or off from within the meeting, and individually for attendees who put up their hand to speak.

In addition to meetings functionality, there are some exciting core updates to Teams phones coming out this month.

6. Sidecar Support *Beta Release*

Sidecars are an efficient way for a phone user to reach frequently used contacts on a desk phone. They are an accessory to a Teams phone with hardware buttons that can be linked to speed dial contacts. A user can select and pin the names of any contacts in the Teams phone to the screen of the sidecar so that calls can be made with one click and it is clear whether a contact is available or not at-a-glance with LED indicators. Teams will support sidecars with touch or non-touch enabled hardware.

Now Teams supports sidecar functionality on the Yealink EXP50, and the Audiocodes C450HD with the expansion module in beta release.

7. Phones in Microsoft 365 Government - GCC

Microsoft Teams phones application is ready to be deployed in the Microsoft 365 Government – GCC environment. For more information, see here. Please check with your vendors for any hardware compliance questions.

8. Policy changes to enable/disable HomeScreen and BetterTogether

There will be two new settings (AllowHomeScreen and AllowBetterTogether) added to the TeamsIPPhone policy that will allow tenant admins to enable/disable home screen and better together on Teams phones. See here for more information.

9. Proximity based meeting join on Teams conference room phones

Proximity based meeting join for an available Microsoft Teams conference phone is supported from this update. The Microsoft Teams client on your PC and mobile detect proximity of the conference phone via the BLE beacon transmitted by the phone and allow you to add the phone easily to the meeting from your pre-join screen on your desktop or mobile client. When a user adds the conference phone to the meeting, the phone would auto accept the incoming meeting request. For more information, see here.

As always you can shop our robust portfolio of Teams certified devices, including a wide array of calling endpoints at the Teams marketplace!

Our company has thousands of Skype Phones (the venerable Poly CX600) fitted to Pop-in rooms and huddle spaces across our company.  Our main obstacle to switching to Teams phones has been the lack of ability for the new generation phones to cater for a common-use scenario where a user enters a room and attaches a laptop via usb cable to use as a speakerphone in a Teams meeting  (which is a capability the old Poly CX600 caters for).

When will "breakout rooms" be rolled out?

Copper Contributor

Not my video channel - but this is really good content on how to use breakout room https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMfsilBhW7A&t=310s

Has the new phone experience removed the search icon on the top right? When I tap into calls on my Yealink t56A there's no search icon on the top right anymore??

@mogzy1 Is this the latest build? We have not removed search from our app. Do you have the right app policies for it? Did it work in previous version and broke after the update?

@Carsten1580 Breakout rooms on phones are currently under test. It will be a few months out before we can ship them to customers.

@Wayne Deguara Thank you for your feedback. We will add this item to our backlog.

@Kruthika Ponnusamy Yes this is the latest build. I worked out it was because we had unpinned calls from the sidebar in the teams desktop app via policies. This then affected the phone experience too in a weird way by removing the search button. Once we added calls back into the sidebar, the search button came back.. Might be worth reporting that back to the team as a bug

I am glad Teams phones now support sidecars; that's a needed feature for receptionists and call centers.  However, based on my experience testing the Yealink MP56 and EXP50 module, I recommend that others defer purchasing sidecars for a bit. As noted in the post, the update supporting sidecars is still in beta and it contains lots of bugs, including: (i) the sidecar buttons are populated in the order contacts are added to the speed dial list rather than alphabetical, which is a problem if you need to add someone later; and (ii) when you answer the phone, the names on the sidecar screen disappear and the screen displays "sign into your account," which prevents the user from using the buttons to transfer calls. Based on the Yealink Release Notes regarding the latest firmware update, the latter issue is a known bug and supposedly will be fixed when MS releases the next update to the Teams app (1449/1.0.94.2020121001).  Although it doesn't work great at the moment, the EXP50 looks cool and it's nice to be able to see the status of up to 60 users at a glance.

@Kruthika Ponnusamy, do you happen to know when the Teams app for the phones will be updated and pushed to the Teams Admin Center?  Is there some way to manually download and install the update in the meantime?

@Kennard1969 1449/1.0.94.2020121001 should already be available an app update in TAC. Are you not seeing it?

Brass Contributor

No.  All of our devices (of them) are still running version 1449/1.0.94.2020111101.  There are no available updates and TAC shows the Teams App is "Up to date" for all devices:

Is there some way I can grab and push the current version, @Kruthika Ponnusamy?  Or do I just need to wait until it appears in TAC?

Brass Contributor

No.  All of our devices (39 of them) are still running version 1449/1.0.94.2020111101.  There are no available updates and TAC shows the Teams App is "Up to date" for all devices:

@Jeff_Schertz, do you happen to know when the December update to the Teams app (1449/1.0.94.2020121001) will be released?  Is there any way to grab/push it before it hits TAC?

Iron Contributor

Any new app would be come packaged in a device firmware update by your phone's manufacturer.

The December release actually has a November client date (1449/1.0.94.2020111101) and is already available on various Teams phones:

Brass Contributor

Thanks for the quick response, @Jeff_Schertz.  I apologize if I misspoke or wasn't clear.  The December release (1449/1.0.94.2020111101) is installed on all of our Yealink phones.  I am trying to find out when the next update (1449/1.0.94.2020121001) will be released.  I am anxious to get the update because, as noted in my January 26 post, I understand this update is supposed to fix some glitches and improve the functionality of the EXP50 sidecar.

Thanks again!  The community appreciates you.

Adding another limitation:

When adding non-GAL contacts in Teams (like a mobile phone number) to the Teams Speed Dial list, it displays correctly on the phone main display but shows the number and not the name on the sidecar. Having a list of 20 mobile numbers on the sidecar makes it difficult to use :(

Hello, I'm also awaiting the release of 1449/1.0.94.2020121001 (Side car support). We have the latest firmware from the device firmware packaged with teams app version 1449/1.0.94.2020111101. The Teams app on these devices randomly restarts and side cars are unusable.

Is there any update on when the newer version will be release?

Copper Contributor

Like you all we are also deploying Teams phones and have been waiting for sidecar support. I just checked today (since we are deploying the receptionist phones today, working sidecar or not) and the December update is out! Haven't even updated yet but hoping that it fixes transfers on sidecar!

Brass Contributor

Good afternoon, @Corbinm3-Avajen.  I received and installed the Teams app update yesterday.  The sidecar works much better now.  Our receptionist can now use the sidecar to easily and quickly transfer calls.  Needless to say, she is very pleased.

Copper Contributor

Sure would be nice to be able to add call queues to contacts/sidecars, but I probably have to wait another 2 months for that!
