From startups to Fortune 500 companies, Trello is the visual way for teams to collaborate on any project. In Microsoft Teams, we find that a great deal of conversation and collaboration happens around projects. So, it only makes sense that one of the premier project management tools should team up with the ultimate hub for Teamwork, in order to allow employees to work better, together.

As you may know, we’ve had Trello available for Microsoft Teams for some time. We are excited to announce that this integration has just been enhanced, with the availability of Trello’s personal app functionality. Trello's Personal app in Microsoft Teams will gives users access to assigned cards across all their Trello boards for different teams where they are contributing.

Trello Personal app features

  • Cards Assigned To Me: This view gives users access to all their boards and Trello cards that are assigned to them. Each individual board where users is contributing will have its own section and cards will be displayed based on their list grouping. User can click on the card and choose to edit it from the same view. User can also choose to flip the view of any individual board from 'My Cards' to 'All Cards'. In 'All Cards' view, all cards on the board will be shown irrespective of the assigned user.

  • Cards Calendar: This view shows all the cards in a calendar view based on their due date.

  • Recent Boards: This view shows different boards that user has been contributing to recently. For a board to show up in this view, it needs to be added into one of the channels in the team. Clicking on the board will take you to the team view where the board is added. This view will also show boards sorted by frequency that user has interacted this week, this month etc.

Clicking on the board will take you to the team view where the board is added. This view will also show boards sorted by Teams where they are added.

Trello in Group Chat:

Microsoft Teams just released the ability to add tabs to chat. Trello is now enabled to be used in 1:1 chats or group chats. Users can now pin Trello boards in their chats and collaborate from there. To use the Trello boards in chats, the board needs to be set to Team visible mode.

Ok, now I'm confused ... I thought Planner was Microsoft's answer to Trello so why is Trello being pushed as a premier project management tool? Useful integration for those already using it, but why not even a mention of Planner as an alternative to Trello?

Copper Contributor
@Oz Oscroft Due to Trello's popularity and because Planner is not the real alternative, at least at this moment (IMHO).

How do I add any app to a chat?  The plus button is not there in either the app, or in the Office365 website.

It is not enough to start a group chat, you have to start sending messages to add tabs.

Copper Contributor

How do I add a Microsoft Planner tab to a group chat?

You can't! A plan belongs to a Team / office 365 group! A group chat is not connected to a group per say therefore cannot utilize a planner plan

Copper Contributor

But I can add Atlassian Trello to a group chat?!

I can add different Planner tabs to different Team channels.

When you add a plan to a channel that plan is connected to that teams office 365 group!

third party apps is basically just a connector which doesn’t care about groups

Iron Contributor

If you're happy using the browser version of Planner you could just add a website tab and add the URL of the plan you're interested in... But if you're talking about a plan you should probably have the conversation in the relevant Teams Channel... If you're using Teams.

Copper Contributor

I wanted to have a Planner that restricted the number of people in the plan to only certain members of the wider Team and not have the entire Team see this particular plan.  Many plans do not involve every member of the wider Team, only a subset of members.

As for adding the Planner website as a tab, I can only link to existing Plans that I created in MS Teams.

When I try and create a plan in Office 365 Planner I get:

Plan and Office 365 Group Creation Disabled

Your organization's global admin has turned off the ability to create or copy new Plans and Office 365 Groups.

Yeah, as I wrote also creating a planner plan creates a group!

you cannot restrict a plan to members of that office 365 it belongs to! You can create additional plans in channels but everyone has access basically

It would be nice to add Planner as a third party app that is basically just a connector which doesn’t care about groups.

@Amit Oberoi - is it possible to create a new card in Trello from Teams?

Microsoft

@deirdrewalsh - Yes, it is possible. You can click on '+ Add another card' option to add a new Trello card.

Copper Contributor

Can you log on to Trello with your Office 365 account? You need a separate account? If you really have to use another account, I am not seeing much value in this integration.

Copper Contributor

Hi @PratheepNair you can't log on to Trello with Office 365, however there are different use cases when users can benefit from this integration, these are some of them:

  • Using Microsoft Teams freemium with Trello
  • Agencies which work with customers' Trello board and primarily use Microsoft Teams for collaboration
Copper Contributor

I already have a Trello account and am now setting up office 365 can I integrate the Trello account with Office 365 or do I have to start over with Trello in Office 365?

Microsoft

@TamiEverda you can use your existing Trello login to authenticate the Trello app in MS Teams. This will allow you to view your Trello boards, create and edit cards, etc. all from your MS Teams application.

Hi,

quick question:

Is this post/app still up-to-date? My Sysadmins tell me they cant find any Trello App, even though I've been assured that we could add it... Could it be that it is area restricted? (Austria)

Thanks,

nowhere

Microsoft

@nowhere please contact your Microsoft Teams Administrator about the app policies in place. This is a third-party app, which means it may be blocked by your administrators' policies. They can allow the app for your tenant.

Wait wait wait...
I get that Trello is more popular than Planner. BUT, we've been good Microsoft customers and have been trying to use Planner As much as possible.
It mostly works except for one thing and that's already a User Voice.

Also, we have been waiting on the Planner/Tasks/To-Do integration since it was announced. Being able to see where you are assigned across ALL items in ONE PLACE (Tasks) is HUGE and we have been holding out for that. Now you're telling us forget all that. Use Trello.
Can Trello Personal be used in a team environment like Planner? Is there a cost for the personal version? Will it integrate with Tasks to show all assignments in ONCE place?

I'm ok with using Trello as long as it integrates with Tasks and we have ONE place to manage assignments and there is no additional costs.

Microsoft

@Jleebiker - you should feel free to use whatever apps make the most sense for your needs!

Iron Contributor

@ErinBailie , we do. But I'm trying to reduce ShadowIT and app sprawl. Ultimately it comes down to my dept to support these apps and I'm trying to keep it managable. We draw the line at apps that cost significant amounts of money and time to support if Microsoft already has a tool. We DO have people that use Trello, but it is a very limited case.

To be clear, we always try to use the best tool for the job, but we need to make sure they are part of an overall, enterprise-wide strategy. Sometimes though, with how fast Microsoft changes things, it's like chasing cats. ;)

Iron Contributor

@Jleebiker  We're using Planner across the board now, having previously used Trello, and it's working really well.  For info., I believe the Trello connector has been retired which is why people may be struggling to find it (although I may be wrong).  Microsoft To Do should also be considered as part of the solution as it draws an individual's tasks from Planner, Outlook and their own list items into the one app, which is optimised for mobile.  The trick seems to be getting the structure of the Office 365 Groups (or Teams if you're using them) which contain the Plans right - the right interest groups / security / communities.  Adding Planner tasks at the right level is also important - not too low-level otherwise you spend your life updating Planner (that's more what To Do is for), and not too high-level such that they're hard to track and never end (that's more in the Project Online space).  I'd be ahppy to talk through further if it would help.

Hola,

Tengo problemas para conectar teams con Trello. Hace uno meses lo hice sin problema, pero ahora me da error.

Copper Contributor

Hi,

I would like to use Trello on Mac device with my login o365.
is there any security restrictions to do that ?
and if I am not administrator of my laptop, do I need to give permissions to the application Trello ?

I guess that the application doesn't have access to my local storage and only access on what I have put on Trello.

Best regards
