Jira Server integration

Since the release of the Jira Cloud app for Microsoft Teams, we’ve seen significant usage and many delighted customers. At the same time, we know there is a large Jira Server community looking for a similar integration – and we could not ignore this huge market need. We are pleased to answer this demand with our new Jira Server version of the Jira integration for Microsoft Teams.

One of our key priorities is to keep parity between Jira Server and Jira Cloud integrations as a main goal, and share the best functionality whether you are using cloud or on-premises Jira. For this reason, the Jira Server app offers many deep integrations, including a messaging extension, a bot, a Teams tab, and a personal app experience. Also, the Jira Server app for Microsoft Teams supports different Jira on-premise options and is compatible with Jira Data Center.

Messaging extension for Jira Server app in Microsoft Teams

Messaging extensions let you embed rich information from Jira directly within your conversations. With the Jira messaging extension for Jira Server you can:

  • Search issues on your Jira Server
  • View the list of last modified issues
  • Share the issue in an interactive card into your channel, group or private conversation

You can also interact with Jira while engaged with your work in Teams. Speed up processes by using the integrated bot for Jira Server.

With this integrated bot, you can:

  • Create new issues via integrated forms
  • Quickly find issues and assign issues to yourself
  • Edit existing issues
  • Log time you spend on an issue
  • Start watching issues
  • Leave a comment on an issue

Channel Tab

Tabs are popular extensions due to its ability to provide app user experiences directly within Microsoft Teams without switching away from the app and the context of work. This experience is shared when added to your team channel.

With Jira Server tab, you’ll be able to pin your team’s backlog to the channel and quickly navigate to it whenever you or your teammates need it. You can also apply the custom filters you use from Jira, or configure your own directly from Teams.

Personal App

Jira Server for Microsoft Teams provides personalized experiences with the bot, and tabs. A personal bot will help you manage your Jira routine tailored to the way you work. Tabs will provide common view on issues assigned to you, reported by you and provide access to your custom filters.

How to get started

To start using the integration you need to install Microsoft Teams for Jira Server app within your Jira Server instance. You’ll need Jira Server administrator permissions. Download the app from Atlassian Marketplace or install it from within Jira Server plugin manager. Once the app is installed in your Jira Server instance, users should install the Jira Server app from Microsoft Teams Apps menu. If you can’t find Jira Server app in Apps menu, make sure if 3rd party apps are enabled by your tenant administrators.

And of course, the webhook-based Jira Server connector is still available for you if you need one-way communication, to retrieve push notifications from Jira.

Enjoy!

In this blog post and other messages from Microsoft, it sounds like this integration is from Microsoft, but the app in the Atlassian Marketplace is from another company, SoftServe. What is the relationship between Microsoft and SoftServe? It looks like the Jira app and the Teams app that make up this solution communicate through SoftServe's servers (https://jira-server.msteams-atlassian.com), which may be a concern for companies that are careful about who handles their data. SoftServe has a privacy policy for this app (https://www.softserveinc.com/en-us/msteams-atlassian-privacy-policy/), but has not completed Atlassian's Vendor Security Self-Assessment (https://marketplace.atlassian.com/vendors/1213467/softserve).

@GregPflaum well written.

We have tried this setup and it works perfectly. But the idea that you have a blackbox on your jira which connects to God knows what company backends and and you have no idea what data can go out or in. We considering to write ours to be in control of data flow in/out to the at least to Microsoft ms teams gates.

BTW, official Atlassian answer about this setup was smth like - use it on your own risk.

Microsoft
SoftServe is a trusted, third-party developer, engaged by Microsoft to develop and host selected third-party Teams integrations, under the Supplier Security & Privacy Assurance (SSPA) program. They've undergone evaluation and approval through Microsoft's high standards for privacy and security practices. More info on the program can be found here.

@ErinBailie do you have somewhere officially stated about Microsoft and SoftServe"partnership" for those Atlassian integrations? Also maybe you have any official statement that they completed SSPA for this software?

Microsoft

@Vyckou - To maintain vendor privacy and confidentiality, we don't publish a public vendor listing. However, if you file a request with your Microsoft provider, Microsoft would be happy to fulfill that request with additional vendor certification info.

@ErinBailie As has oft been said, "If it's free, you aren't the customer". I'm curious to know if this service is sponsored by Microsoft, and if so...how long is that arrangement intended to last? I'd also like to know if there is a plan to switch it to a commercial license eventually.

@CCDel

This integration is free of charge and supported jointly by Microsoft and Atlassian. There is no plan to make it paid in the near future, and there is no plan to stop support for it. I hope this helps!

@ErinBailie @MSTeamsApps This is no longer working, as the certificate for *.msteams-atlassian.com expired on the 29th June. Can this be fixed asap?

Thanks

Update, this was fixed as the host is owned by SoftServInc who create the plugin.
