The files tab is very limited, and takes up unnecessary room. Will there be a plan to allow to remove that tab, OR...replace it with the better 'document library' tab as a default? I don't want to be forced to be one folder in, in a document library.

You can add as many other document libraries into the files view as you like, giving you a single space for all your libraries (should you wish)

I hope it is understood by Microsoft how messy the Files tab can be for enterprises.
The Files tab is almost equivalent to people opening a Dropbox site to share files and then they never bring them back to the enterprise.
I understand it is not possible to remove the files tab but can it be hidden? If not, what is the best recommendation to discourage its use? or alternatively the recommended process to bring the files to their right location once the team has wrapped up?
As mentioned by other colleagues a document library is a better option to keep files in the right structures where they can be found later. In our organization we have to create a file called "Don't put any files in here" in the Files tab in order to remind people to use the Document Library.

Will there be an opportunity to allow OneDrive access from the Files Tab? The OneDrive UI is very appealing in its structure, links, and Shared Library capabilities, compared to the SharePoint document UI for Files.

I totally agree. The ability to "turn off" or remove the files tab would be a great feature for those enterprises that are using a specific CRM for their document management repository. Having this here, while convenient will confuse new team members as to document management policies employed by the organization.
At there very least, the ability to insert a link to an internal CRM would be helpful. I've tried using the "Website" file type, but it only takes "https://" URLs.

@Karuana Gatimu We have restricted our domain on the Sharepoint level of preventing all files from being accessed outside of our org. Required by a client audit. Since Sharepoint is the backbone repository for Teams, it makes the File tab useless when we have a Team with external guests. We try to tell our internal users to stop dropping files in the Files tab because our clients can't see the items. Would love to have the option to "hide" the tab or move far to the right.
