SharePoint is pulling some big roadmap Gs this month - so hang on! The SharePoint team has been hard at work with great new updates rolled out in February 2019. This is the comprehensive recap for all things SharePoint and related technology, plus the Intrazone Roadmap Pitstop: February 2019 episode – a bonus monthly audible companion to help answer, "What's rolling out now for SharePoint and related technologies into Office 365?" Our goal is to provide additional good change management resources based on feedback from you, our listeners/readers - so thank you.

Listen and scroll below (info, links and screenshots) to stay informed on what the SharePoint team delivered this past month - plus related technology and a few teasers of what's to come:

In this podcast episode, I, too, talk with CJ Tan (LinkedIn), principal program manager on the SharePoint engineering team who has focused on all things file hover card experiences and site analytics.

All the features listed below began rolling out to Targeted Release customers in Office 365 as of February 2019 (possibly early March 2019). “Buckle up, Punxatawny Phil. Here comes the light shining on your groundhog shadow – and it looks like another six weeks of roadmap goodness!" – Me. ;)

Inform and engage with dynamic employee experiences

Consider building your modern intranet on SharePoint in Office 365. Now consider that point in time when you commit to moving content and other items from on-premises to the cloud. That’s where the SharePoint Migration Tool helps you get to Office 365 to take advantage of cloud agility, scalability, and reliability across your IT infrastructure.

SharePoint Migration tool improvements…

Managed Metadata Service support | If you have an existing taxonomy in SharePoint Server 2013, the SharePoint Migration Tool can now migrate your content types and term stores to Office 365. Global term store migration requires global tenant admin permissions.

Migrate on-premises SharePoint webparts | You can now bring many of the on-premises web parts into SharePoint in Office 365 to ease the move from on-premises to cloud. Some examples: blog, chart viewer, content search, list form, list view media, and more - full list of supported SharePoint web parts.

You can also now migrate:

  • Navigation and icons
  • Site descriptions
  • Pages, including any pages in the site asset library

The SharePoint Migration Tool you can migrate just about every element of SharePoint sites that you care most about including web parts, pages, and site navigation.

Drag/drop re-order of left-hand side navigation

It is now possible to rearrange the order of your site navigation elements with the simple drag and drop gesture. No more multiple clicks of the ellipses to “move up” or “move down.” Just grab the navigation item you want to move and drag/drop it into its new location – even into a sub-navigation location.

Removing the Feedback button in preparation of new feedback experience

Starting February 2019, we're removing the product Feedback button from the site footer of all SharePoint home and modern site pages. Customer feedback continues to help us prioritize our work. We’ll be adding new ways to send feedback from the navigation bar in the coming months.

Removing the circular pictures of the first three members of the group

We’re updating the design of the site header for SharePoint sites connected to Office 365 groups. In favor or a more-simple interface, we are removing the circular pictures of the first three members of the group. This was static to the first three members, and duplicative to existing functionality - access to the members of the group. Users who want to see members of the group can continue to click the Members link in the header to see the full membership list.

SharePoint list innovations…

Bulk check in/out | You’ll be able to check in and check out multiple files at the same time from the modern command bar in the document library.

Signals (status icons) | We’re adding visual cues about the status of a file, such as check-outs, sharing, DLP blocks, or missing metadata to modern views.

Column totals | You’ll be able to display column totals and subtotals in the footer of a group or a list/library view.

File Hover Cards are getting smarter and available for all file types.

The File Hover Card gives you a quick peek at your most important files, and it’s getting better. As soon as you hover your mouse over a file you will be able to see details like access stats - number of views, who viewed, who modified. And starting this month, we’re adding this hover experience to almost all file types, not just core Office files. This new experience will also appear for files listed in your Shared by Me view. Get back to the future and start hovering!

Safeguard sensitive data consistently across Mac, iOS, and Android

To help protect sensitive data consistently across various platforms, we’re announcing new Microsoft Information Protection capabilities that enable users to classify content and apply labels to documents and emails directly from Office apps on Mac (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook) and Office mobile apps (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel on iOS and Android).

On the left, apply sensitivity labels in Office apps on Mac. And on the right, apply same sensitivity labels in Office mobile apps on iOS.On the left, apply sensitivity labels in Office apps on Mac. And on the right, apply same sensitivity labels in Office mobile apps on iOS.

This lays the foundation for future work when sensitivity labels apply to containers like SharePoint document libraries. You can create sensitivity labels and associate them with policies in the new Microsoft 365 Security and Compliance Center. You can then apply these labels to files, emails, groups, Sites and Teams to automatically enforce consistent policies across your content – throughout your intranet.

Important, related technology

Scan improvements with the OneDrive mobile app

OneDrive leverages the power of Microsoft Office Lens to capture the physical elements like receipts and whiteboards, storing them as easy-to-read PDFs. OneDrive now offers the ability to choose the save location from anywhere in your OneDrive or SharePoint Sites for new scans. Then give it a name and fill out any metadata properties for SharePoint document libraries - all before you upload it so it's intact from day one. Scan your next whiteboard session, and add who was in the meeting, meeting topic, status and more – whatever you’re tracking in that library – and then it’s in the right place for all members.

OneDrive Sync Client Mass Delete Prompt

So now, whenever someone deletes more than 200 synced OneDrive or SharePoint team site files at once from her or his device, the OneDrive sync client will prompt the user to confirm it was intentional. If it was accidental, the user can tap Restore Files to bring them back.

Planner: "multi-plan" -- associate multiple plans Office 365 group - a nice way to make more plans for the same group of people. When you create a new plan, select "Add to an existing Office 365 group" - and then select the existing group and start assigning tasks; you can do this more than once to then have multiple plans associated to the same Office 365 group. You can also create a brand new Planner plan directly from the “+New” menu of your group-connected SharePoint team site.

Self-service Office 365 Video migration to Microsoft Stream

This is all goodness from a SharePoint pages and news perspective. once migrated, you'll have the full power of Microsoft Stream - which brings speech-to-text transcription, improved playback, face detection, enhanced in-player search, and more.
