Today at Ignite 2017, we announced SharePoint hub sites, a new building block of the intranet, to bring together related sites to roll up news and activity, to simplify search, and to create cohesion with shared navigation and look-and-feel.
The digital workplace is dynamic and ever changing. Business goals and team structures evolve and change – often frequently. SharePoint helps your organization adapt, by connecting your workplace with intelligent content management and intranets that give you the tools to share and work together, and to inform and engage people across the organization. And now it gets easier to organize your intranet dynamically.
You can associate multiple team sites and communication sites to model and promote an intranet that reflects the way your people organize. Hub sites provide common navigational structure, look and feel, and search across associated sites. Hub sites also aggregate news and activities from associated sites and display the roll-up on the hub site’s home page.

You can use SharePoint hub sites to organize concepts, teams, divisions, or resources throughout your businesses. Let’s dive into the details.
Create a cohesive set of related sites with shared navigation, look and feel
A hub site brings consistency across sites from the top down. When a team site or communication site is associated to a hub site, it inherits common characteristics, including:
Navigation – Define top navigation in the hub site that is inherited by associated sites.
Theme – Define the look and feel of the hub site, and that theme remains consistent across associated sites.
Logo – A logo on a site is like the green sticker on a map that says, “You are here.” It’s an important identifier of the site you are visiting, and the information and people the site represents. A consistent logo defined by the hub site and used by associated sites says, “You are here, and you have not left.”
SharePoint hub sites bring together team sites and communication sites together into more centralized locations within your intranet.
Roll up and present a consolidated view of news and activities
Throughout the lifecycle of your projects, your launches, your internal campaigns, it is important to increase visibility, awareness and discoverability beyond the core day-to-day people, and not expect everyone to have to drill into the various related sites, but more represent a clear, broad picture of what’s happening across sites, aka, what’s happening across projects and initiatives. Team sites and communication sites push content and information up to the hub site level with:
News aggregation –After you create and publish a news article on an associated site, the news article surfaces on SharePoint home, in the SharePoint mobile apps, and now on the hub site’s home page.
Combined site activities – It’s important to know what is happening within sites, so you can prioritize your focus and your time. Site activities are visible on a team site’s home page, and on the site’s card on SharePoint home. Now, site activities will roll up from each associated sites so that they are visible on the hub site’s home page, so you can see what happening across related sites, instead of having to view activity site by site.
Scoped search – When you search for content from a hub site, results include content from all associated sites. Because associated sites are related, search from the hub site home page increases relevance, and enhances content discovery.
Create hub sites and associate team and communication sites
It is easy for admins to create one or more hub sites. After a hub site is created, site owners can associate existing team sites and communication sites with the hub site, or to associate a new site while creating a site from SharePoint home in Office 365Soon you will be able to create an associated site directly from within the hub site itself.
Site owners can associate an existing team site or communication site with a hub site.
Click the gear icon in the upper right of the site.
Click Site information.
In the Edit site information pane that appears, click the Hub site drop-down menu and choose the right hub site to join.
Note that team sites and communication sites can only be associated to one hub site. And as easy as it is to join a site to a hub site, you, too, can un-join from one. This is the power of a dynamic intranet, one that can change and adapt with the ebb and flow of your ever-changing business landscape.

Q: When can I expect to see SharePoint hub sites appear in my Office 365 tenant?
A: UPDATED [5.7.2018] | A: SharePoint hub sites have now been rolled out to 100% worldwide in Office 365, including enterprise, education and government customers. Also, the SharePoint mobile apps have been updated in the production versions to fully support them.
Q: Can I join one SharePoint hub site under another hub site?
A: No, you won't be able to join a SharePoint hub site to another hub site.
Q:Can a team site or a communication site be joined to more than one SharePoint hub site?
A:No. It will only be possible to join a site to one hub site at a time. It is possible to link to various un'joined sites in the top naviogation. And it will be possible, within seconds, to join and/or un'join a site as the business changes.
Q: Can a hub site replace my current organizational portal?
A: Hub sites are designed to let you dynamically organize closely related sites, bringing together similar projects, and binding related assets, and presenting common activity. Customers with portals that include customization beyond the web parts and extensions that SharePoint Framework currently supports are likely to continue using the SharePoint publishing infrastructure, which continues to be fully supported both in SharePoint Server on-premises and SharePoint Online.
Q: When should I use a team site, and when should I use a communication site?
A: Your SharePoint team site lets you share content, knowledge, news and apps with your group as collaborate on a project. A communication site lets you tell your story, share your work, and showcase your product across the organization.
the team is reviewing how we support multi-lingual scenarios for modern communication and hub sites. We don't have anything further to share today, but to share that it's a known ask and one we'd like to address in 2018 - it's top of mind.
So at the last day of the first month of 2019: have I missed something?
Managed Navigation used on SharePoint Online sites doesn't work via the SharePoint mobile app. When you select any managed navigation item you get a "oops something went wrong". Can anyone share any insight on how to make this work that doesn't require having the user access the site via a browser on a tiny screen and custom mobile UI development?
Hub sites should be much more dynamic than they are. Again, I am having a hard time grasping the incompleteness of this technology. An administrator manually controlling hub sites seems non-productive and requires a specific person to control the way information and data are brought together.
Hub sites should be controlled by analyzing the users individual logins and access to specific files and other cloud resources. Determine social , technical and humanistic behavior and use those data points to connect each other. Let the end user be in control of the building blocks to their own more productive portal or intranet. Leave the ability for an Administrative override for really important company announcements or emergency broadcasts. but ultimately hubs as they are defined today can become company silos. Silos prohibit the effective communication between data points.
Anyway, the new SharePoint platform is an improvement and I am moving everything over to it. Power Apps and Flows will remove any dependency on SharePoint Lists, or workflows. Now just do the same thing with Libraries and News
Hopefully Microsoft can unify its data storage offering and provide a new robust cloud file system that Corporations can use as a fully managed data storage platform. Millions of documents in millions of subfolders with 100% reliable and easy access. Unify this with OneDrive so that consumers and businesses can truly have OneDrive to access files and other content. Now, there's OneDrive And SharePoint Libraries making it actually (at a minimum) TwoDrives for any corporation in the cloud. Once Microsoft is able to figure out how to eliminate TwoDrives and provide a true OneDrive experience, SharePoint is stripped down to just a news posting app.
Let the end user Explore, modify, create dashboards, consume all Information they have access to, then give them easy to use building blocks and templates to create their very Own Intranet using http://www.office.com
Corporations would simply need to set the home page of their browsers to http://www.office.com and provide a really powerful tool for end users and also a platform that can be modified to an individual tenants needs.
I love SharePoint, but it is time for evolution. Again, this is the greatest SharePoint upgrade yet, but just take a moment anyone reading this and go to http://www.office.com and login. (if you are licensed for it) What is SharePoint?
In my opinion, SharePoint should dissolve completely. Power Apps and Flow have already begun to dissolve SharePoint. Lets get it over with. :)
With regards adding site columns or content types to each of the New Team or Communication site collections, I am thinking it is ok to script add the same site column and or, content type to each collection. Alternatively, could I deem one of my Site hubs to also act as a content type hub? If this is the case, can other site hubs + families utilise this 'foreign' content type hub.
Douglas Plumley, there is currently no way to switch out the side bar site navigation on the left on a team site to the top horizontal site nav. Our team has heard this request and we're looking into it.
This new experience certainly is an improvement overall I think everyone can agree on that. However, I think Microsoft should have skipped this step and not even look at hub sites or model SharePoint based on a familiar experience such as site collections and subsites. I think Microsoft should have been much more forward thinking.
Lets look at the Office 365 cloud as a single application with building blocks. SharePoint no longer needs to be administratively built by anyone. The Artificial Intelligence engine should be accumulating statistical and behavior patterns on every user logging in. This data should then be presented at the Office 365 Cloud Application level as a building block. Using building blocks of information in the Office 365 Global Cloud Application , a new breed of IT is created that not only depends on Technical know how, but has the creativity to put these building blocks together in order to maximize organizational efficiency.
Another words, enough with SharePoint already. Share (ing) Point (less) Lets focus on what really matters and that is new technology without the stigma of old Branding. In my opinion, OneDrive, Power Apps and Flow have already removed core components of what used to be SharePoint. These technologies where skillfully rebranded. What else does SharePoint do? It delivers News or corporate communications. Why didn't Microsoft simply wait until they release a new function in The Office 365 Platform that allows Corporate or Other types of communications replacing "SharePoint"
However, I am afraid to admit, that I honestly believe Microsoft will never achieve the ultimate goal of cloud computing when they continually fail to provide a clear path forward among other things...:)
Hi . I want to my facebook pages on the hub sites mean the have no web part of facebook pages like in the team sites how we can get it or when we get it on hub sites.
I've been searching and searching but just haven't been able to find it, the screenshots above of "hub sites" look like they used the communication site template. I started with a team site that has the side bar navigation on the left, I'd like to make it more like the screenshots and only have the top bar navigation.
Is there a way to change the template of an existing site?

Hub sites provide common navigational structure, look and feel, and search across associated sites. Hub sites also aggregate news and activities from associated sites and display the roll-up on the hub site’s home page.

Create a cohesive set of related sites with shared navigation, look and feel

A hub site brings consistency across sites from the top down. When a team site or communication site is associated to a hub site, it inherits common characteristics, including:

Navigation – Define top navigation in the hub site that is inherited by associated sites.
\n
Theme – Define the look and feel of the hub site, and that theme remains consistent across associated sites.
\n
Logo – A logo on a site is like the green sticker on a map that says, “You are here.” It’s an important identifier of the site you are visiting, and the information and people the site represents. A consistent logo defined by the hub site and used by associated sites says, “You are here, and you have not left.”

SharePoint hub sites bring together team sites and communication sites together into more centralized locations within your intranet.

Roll up and present a consolidated view of news and activities
\n
Throughout the lifecycle of your projects, your launches, your internal campaigns, it is important to increase visibility, awareness and discoverability beyond the core day-to-day people, and not expect everyone to have to drill into the various related sites, but more represent a clear, broad picture of what’s happening across sites, aka, what’s happening across projects and initiatives. Team sites and communication sites push content and information up to the hub site level with:

News aggregation –After you create and publish a news article on an associated site, the news article surfaces on SharePoint home, in the SharePoint mobile apps, and now on the hub site’s home page.

Combined site activities – It’s important to know what is happening within sites, so you can prioritize your focus and your time. Site activities are visible on a team site’s home page, and on the site’s card on SharePoint home. Now, site activities will roll up from each associated sites so that they are visible on the hub site’s home page, so you can see what happening across related sites, instead of having to view activity site by site.

Scoped search – When you search for content from a hub site, results include content from all associated sites. Because associated sites are related, search from the hub site home page increases relevance, and enhances content discovery.

Create a cohesive set of related sites with shared navigation, look and feel

A hub site brings consistency across sites from the top down. When a team site or communication site is associated to a hub site, it inherits common characteristics, including:

Navigation – Define top navigation in the hub site that is inherited by associated sites.
\n
Theme – Define the look and feel of the hub site, and that theme remains consistent across associated sites.
\n
Logo – A logo on a site is like the green sticker on a map that says, “You are here.” It’s an important identifier of the site you are visiting, and the information and people the site represents. A consistent logo defined by the hub site and used by associated sites says, “You are here, and you have not left.”

SharePoint hub sites bring together team sites and communication sites together into more centralized locations within your intranet.

Roll up and present a consolidated view of news and activities
\n
Throughout the lifecycle of your projects, your launches, your internal campaigns, it is important to increase visibility, awareness and discoverability beyond the core day-to-day people, and not expect everyone to have to drill into the various related sites, but more represent a clear, broad picture of what’s happening across sites, aka, what’s happening across projects and initiatives. Team sites and communication sites push content and information up to the hub site level with:

News aggregation –After you create and publish a news article on an associated site, the news article surfaces on SharePoint home, in the SharePoint mobile apps, and now on the hub site’s home page.
\n
Combined site activities – It’s important to know what is happening within sites, so you can prioritize your focus and your time. Site activities are visible on a team site’s home page, and on the site’s card on SharePoint home. Now, site activities will roll up from each associated sites so that they are visible on the hub site’s home page, so you can see what happening across related sites, instead of having to view activity site by site.

Scoped search – When you search for content from a hub site, results include content from all associated sites. Because associated sites are related, search from the hub site home page increases relevance, and enhances content discovery.

It is easy for admins to create one or more hub sites. the team is reviewing how we support multi-lingual scenarios for modern communication and hub sites. We don't have anything further to share today, but to share that it's a known ask and one we'd like to address in 2018 - it's top of mind.

Managed Navigation used on SharePoint Online sites doesn't work via the SharePoint mobile app. When you select any managed navigation item you get a \"oops something went wrong\". Can anyone share any insight on how to make this work that doesn't require having the user access the site via a browser on a tiny screen and custom mobile UI development?

Hub sites should be much more dynamic than they are. Again, I am having a hard time grasping the incompleteness of this technology. An administrator manually controlling hub sites seems non-productive and requires a specific person to control the way information and data are brought together.
Hub sites should be controlled by analyzing the users individual logins and access to specific files and other cloud resources. Determine social , technical and humanistic behavior and use those data points to connect each other. Let the end user be in control of the building blocks to their own more productive portal or intranet. Leave the ability for an Administrative override for really important company announcements or emergency broadcasts. but ultimately hubs as they are defined today can become company silos. Silos prohibit the effective communication between data points.
Anyway, the new SharePoint platform is an improvement and I am moving everything over to it. Power Apps and Flows will remove any dependency on SharePoint Lists, or workflows. Now just do the same thing with Libraries and News
Hopefully Microsoft can unify its data storage offering and provide a new robust cloud file system that Corporations can use as a fully managed data storage platform. Millions of documents in millions of subfolders with 100% reliable and easy access. Unify this with OneDrive so that consumers and businesses can truly have OneDrive to access files and other content. Now, there's OneDrive And SharePoint Libraries making it actually (at a minimum) TwoDrives for any corporation in the cloud. Once Microsoft is able to figure out how to eliminate TwoDrives and provide a true OneDrive experience, SharePoint is stripped down to just a news posting app.
Let the end user Explore, modify, create dashboards, consume all Information they have access to, then give them easy to use building blocks and templates to create their very Own Intranet using http://www.office.com
Corporations would simply need to set the home page of their browsers to http://www.office.com and provide a really powerful tool for end users and also a platform that can be modified to an individual tenants needs.
I love SharePoint, but it is time for evolution. Again, this is the greatest SharePoint upgrade yet, but just take a moment anyone reading this and go to http://www.office.com and login. (if you are licensed for it) What is SharePoint?
In my opinion, SharePoint should dissolve completely. Power Apps and Flow have already begun to dissolve SharePoint. Lets get it over with. :)

With regards adding site columns or content types to each of the New Team or Communication site collections, I am thinking it is ok to script add the same site column and or, content type to each collection. Alternatively, could I deem one of my Site hubs to also act as a content type hub? If this is the case, can other site hubs + families utilise this 'foreign' content type hub.

Douglas Plumley, there is currently no way to switch out the side bar site navigation on the left on a team site to the top horizontal site nav. Our team has heard this request and we're looking into it.

This new experience certainly is an improvement overall I think everyone can agree on that. However, I think Microsoft should have skipped this step and not even look at hub sites or model SharePoint based on a familiar experience such as site collections and subsites. I think Microsoft should have been much more forward thinking.
Lets look at the Office 365 cloud as a single application with building blocks. SharePoint no longer needs to be administratively built by anyone. The Artificial Intelligence engine should be accumulating statistical and behavior patterns on every user logging in. This data should then be presented at the Office 365 Cloud Application level as a building block. Using building blocks of information in the Office 365 Global Cloud Application , a new breed of IT is created that not only depends on Technical know how, but has the creativity to put these building blocks together in order to maximize organizational efficiency.
Another words, enough with SharePoint already. Share (ing) Point (less) Lets focus on what really matters and that is new technology without the stigma of old Branding. In my opinion, OneDrive, Power Apps and Flow have already removed core components of what used to be SharePoint. These technologies where skillfully rebranded. What else does SharePoint do? It delivers News or corporate communications. Why didn't Microsoft simply wait until they release a new function in The Office 365 Platform that allows Corporate or Other types of communications replacing \"SharePoint\"
However, I am afraid to admit, that I honestly believe Microsoft will never achieve the ultimate goal of cloud computing when they continually fail to provide a clear path forward among other things...:)

I've been searching and searching but just haven't been able to find it, the screenshots above of \"hub sites\" look like they used the communication site template. I started with a team site that has the side bar navigation on the left, I'd like to make it more like the screenshots and only have the top bar navigation.
