Microsoft focuses on providing a seamless move to Microsoft 365 with as much expertise and tooling we and our ecosystem can offer – across the globe. Our goal is to help move to the cloud with confidence.

We are pleased to share Migration Manager – part of the SharePoint admin center - has completed rollout to Microsoft 365, including commercial and government cloud customers. We, too, have updated the SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT) – adding support for migrating content to Microsoft Teams. Our migration specialists have been working hard to bring the migration service, including admin-led and self-service offerings, to more customers as demand to move content to the cloud continues to grow.

Microsoft offers a diverse migration tool and services portfolio along with a strong partner ecosystem – collectively the broadest set of offerings to assist your migration into Microsoft 365.Microsoft offers a diverse migration tool and services portfolio along with a strong partner ecosystem – collectively the broadest set of offerings to assist your migration into Microsoft 365.

Let’s dive into the details…

Migrate on-premises content with Migration Manager in the SharePoint admin center

Migration Manager is now generally available. It is a key part of the SharePoint admin center, to help orchestrate and simplify management of large-scale migrations. Admins can add and manage multiple migration agents to centrally orchestrate all migration activities.

Migration Manager lets you migrate your on-premises file share content to Microsoft 365. Through a simple interface within the SharePoint admin center, admins can manage thousands of migration tasks across multiple machines.

The new task view in the SharePoint admin center provides one location to create and monitor progress. For each task, there is a task detail pane to download summary reports and change settings for individual tasks – all centrally managed within the SharePoint admin experience.

Since initial phases of roll out, Migration Manager has made performance improvements and achieved further accessibility compliance. In addition, you can now:

  • Specify a document library and a folder for your migration destination
  • Paste a destination URL (SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams); includes automatic scanning.
  • Add an increased number of tasks to your migration
  • Sort and search tasks

Note: This product is intended for global and SharePoint administrators of commercial and government cloud Microsoft 365 (Office 365) customers.

Really a good feature. Very much interested to check the teams capabilities. Can this tool used for moving sites with in SharePoint online like moving sub site as parent or move to other locations or move to communication site?

I see in the SP admin UI that this tool supports tenant-to-tenant migration. Is this true for all of these workloads, including Teams? Thanks!

Hi @SenthilrajanKaliyaperumal - I believe you can use the SharePoint Migration Tool to migrate content across sites. Not 100% sure about sub-sites, but would think the source URL-to-destination-URL logic would apply... seeing if my peer @Simon Bourdages can comment further. - Mark

Hi @Pontus T - I believe so. Looping in my peer @Hani Loza who can best answer. Hani, Migration Manager supports tenant-to-tenant, incl. Teams?

Iron Contributor

@Pontus T, mover.io (free service, purchased by Microsoft in October 2019) already supports transferring SharePoint files from tenant to tenant (see https://mover.io/guides/migrating-office-365-to-office-365/) - it still requires you create the desired sites (or Groups or Teams, which each get their own site) in the destination tenant before you can 'map' the source (referred to as "user", but for SharePoint they mean "site") to the destination.

However, perhaps @Hani Loza will have further comments regarding Migration Manager - I'm particularly interested in EDU specific scenarios and to know how OneNote (Class) Notebooks are handled.  I suspect those (Class) Notebooks aren't tied back to the (Class) Teams, so despite managing to migrate other files, the notebook will not be transferred intact.

Microsoft

@SenthilrajanKaliyaperumal , SPMT can migrate on premise sites or subsites to destinations being site collections or subsites.  i think i would be careful here and mention that the tool only move content from On premise to SharePoint Online. We are aware of the ask for moving content within SharePoint Online but currently not possible. If you are looking at moving only files, you could explore the Mover.io tool with a link available directly in your admin center.

Microsoft

@Pontus T , As of right now, Mover is the tool microsoft provide that can move content from cloud to cloud including SPO to SPO ( you can find it in the Admin center under migration tab). Mover will only move your files and folders for now.  As mentioned just above, we are aware of the ask for moving content within SharePoint Online but currently not possible apart from what Mover provides.
