I cannot connect my on-premises environment with the tool.

Does this tool supports SharePoint Onpremises 2016 as well?

@mehak narmeen Currently the SharePoint Migration Tool supports SharePoint Server 2013 as a source location for migration.

"The SharePoint Migration Tool lets you select from two sources from which to migrate your data: from an on-premises SharePoint Server 2013 site or from a local file share or network path."

There are some further details here: How to use the SharePoint Migration Tool

This blog mentions "support for more SharePoint versions" is upcoming, so look out for enhancements in this regards later in the year.

@mehak narmean The SharePoint Migration Tool (SPMT) supports SharePoint Server 2013 sites, lists, etc.  We're working on supporting additional versions.  In addition you can migrate file shares, e.g. shared and local content using SPMT.

This is a useful tool for simple migrations without complex permissions involved. One thing to keep in mind is that any network file shares with unique permissions may require a higher level of admin access for the user who is doing the migration, to migrate them. We hit that issue when we tried to migrate an NFS and discovered that there were folders with special permissions that we could not see (or migrate).

Is there a reason that you cannot use this tool to copy from site collection to another site collection to create a new site collection in SPO?

We have started using the tool to migrate documents from file shares to folks OneDrive.  Some of our users have had some files that are basically .doc or .docx that were moved into OneDrive, but have ~$ prefix the name.  These files that are working file on the file share are not opening now in OneDrive.  The documents that have this prefix seem to be at random.  I thought had first it could have been a file path length issue or a character in the file name issue, but we have consulted the employees and that is not the case.  If anyone else has run into this issue or can share some documentation about why it is doing this please let us know.  We want this process to go as smoothly as possible for our users.

Andre @ NL Salomons Don't think there are any technical reasons for it, just seemingly not a priority, you can vote for this here, on this UserVoice suggestion though -

@Amy Coleman The files with $-prefixes I believe are restored/temporary files used by Word (If the application crashes/freezes and is restarted with unsaved changes), there should be corresponding files without the $-prefix, or you can open the $-files locally via the old fileshare, and save them without special characters in the filename.

Can you target a folder within the Sharepoint site? Its strange that the folder selected is not included in the migration, only the subfolders.
