If you need to streamline business processes, you need great tools to edit data in lists and libraries.  Excel has long been a foundational tool for collecting, editing and analyzing data. People understand and embrace the simplicity of sorting and editing data values in a grid.

As we announced at SPC18, we are pleased to finally release our enhanced Quick Edit, bringing the power and simplicity of “spreadsheet” views to modern SharePoint lists and libraries.

You can preview the new Quick Edit in this self-service walk through.   Let’s look in more detail.

Filters Pane is now available in Quick Edit Mode

Users can filter their content in Quick Edit mode to locate the items for updates. In addition, any filters or sorting applied in Quick Edit will persist as the user navigates back to the normal view.

All formatting appears in Quick Edit

Any custom formatting for the list or document library will now also render in Quick Edit. For example, this includes experiences like row formatting, user profile photos, conditional formatting, and data bars.

Breadcrumb

Just as in normal list and document library views, the breadcrumb will now appear in Quick Edit.  This gives you a visual clue about applied filters and a simple way to navigate “back” to larger data sets.

Adjust and save column widths

Users can now define their preferred column widths by dragging and dropping directly within Quick Edit. In addition, any previously save column widths (either in the view or in local storage) will persist for users when they navigate to Quick Edit.

Enhanced people picker

You can now browse and selected users from your organization directory efficiently with our new people picker.  You can browse for partial name matches and see user photos and titles in line, as shown below.

Quick Edit enhancements will start rolling out to Targeted Release in July 2019.   We’ll continue to share the latest news here on the TechCommunity.  Thanks.

I like the way of using interactive demo to introduce new features.

Looking very useful! Keep up the great work!

When List experience is in Modern Experience, Data Sheet View is showing as Standard view. If List experience is in classic, Data Sheet is working fine.

Anyone facing the same issue.

Wow great new features! Are there any plans to develop this in SharePoint Server 2019?

@Chris McNulty

Was there a change to the formatting of the cells while in Quick Edit mode? We are using a dark theme and I got a report today that:

  • the grey text on white background is hard to read (see screenshot #1)
  • the formatting indicating a change was made while in Quick Edit is now a different color (see screenshot #2).

My questions:

  1. What was the formatting previously?
  2. Is there a way to change it? I went through all of the options to modify my theme and I can't tell what about a light theme vs a dark theme is having this effect.

Thank you,

Nicole Hill

This sounds cool, I'm always excited when lists get some love.

However, the obvious question here is DOES the widths save after a page refresh, or can they bet set for all users yet?

This will be great - something our users rely on quite a lot.

Feature "Any custom formatting for the list or document library will now also render in Quick Edit. For example, this includes experiences like row formatting, user profile photos, conditional formatting, and data bars."

Issue: I am experiencing an issue where the json conditional formatting on a cell is not updating to reflect a changed value while in quick edit mode.

For example, Availability dropdown cell background is Green when value is set to IN. In quick edit mode I update the Availability column to OUT and the cell formatting stays Green even if I click on a new row to save the change. Its not until I exit Quick Edit mode that I see the background change to Red - reflecting the Out value.

Is this showing the contact card when we hover to the user?

I've found that lookup columns no longer work, we can view but when trying to edit just get a loading icon.  Users have been switching back to classic to quick edit lookups.

How to get data into my list in the first palace?

Manuel edits and item create is simply not an option no matter how nice looking the UI is.

I want data automatically copied and incrementally updated from a"source list" to my newly created list based on criteria.

Source list has approx 150.000 items and I only want items changed or created within the last 6 months - approx 30.000 items

Also, I want this transfer/update to happen every day on an incremental basis?

Any feedback is most appreciated thanks :)

@Chris McNulty Great to see these features for improving usability!

One list behavior that's still not very usable is that if the list is grouped by some column(s), this hides the Quick Edit button. I can sort of understand the reasoning logically, but practically there's no reason to remove this useful functionality for grouped lists.

If the Quick Edit was made available even for grouped views, on clicking it the edit pane should simply open the list in 'flat' mode, i.e. without the grouping. This would make it much more usable rather than having a grouped view solely for view, and having to create another ungrouped view just for editing.

When I do a search in a SharePoint library, I no longer see the 'Quick edit' option in the header. Is that expected behavior?

Copper Contributor

Hi,

My organization uses SP 2019 On-Premise.  We have 'Quick Edit'; the 'Filters' are only visible BEFORE choosing to click on 'Quick Edit'; after that, they disappear.  So, a user has to choose their filter BEFORE choosing to 'Quick Edit' in SP 2019.

Is what you are showing only in the SP Online version?

Copper Contributor

I see this "Edit in Grid View" option for lists but not in libraries, is this going to happen at some point? Using SharePoint Online.
