Hello everyone,

The team has been hard at work and we have some great new updates coming in November that you might be interested in! This month, we will be releasing the next version of the OneDrive mobile apps (on both iOS and Android) with support for new Mobile Capture scenarios and intelligent meeting note sharing. The Word, Excel and PowerPoint mobile apps will ship the common sharing dialog as well. On the web, we are releasing the new Recent and the new Manage Access experiences. Finally, we’re making some updates to the Access Request Outlook Actionable Messages. All of these features will start arriving in your organization in November. We are also announcing deprecation plans for the OneDrive application on Mac OS X Yosemite (10.10) & El Capitan (10.11).

New Mobile Capture scenarios for OneDrive on iOS and Android

Rolling out in November

We are extending our scan functionality in the OneDrive mobile apps to make your experience even better! You can use the OneDrive apps to scan documents, whiteboards, images from the field, a site visit and more! With the new Mobile Capture feature, you can now add custom metadata to anything you scan with the app. Simply start the scan from the Library you want to add it to, and after capturing the scan, the metadata fields will appear for you to edit in the app. The image and metadata will both be added to the library you’ve selected! This feature will begin rolling out on both Android and iOS in November.

Meeting Note Sharing

Rolling out in November

OneDrive strives to make your work day easier with powerful intelligence features that save you time. When taking a scan of meeting notes, the OneDrive mobile apps will now prompt you to share the scan with the meeting invitees. This feature is made possible by the power of the Microsoft Graph which connects your files, scans, meetings and more together. This feature will be available on both Android and iOS in November.

Word, Excel & PowerPoint on iOS and Android now use the common sharing dialog

Rolling out in November

Learn to share once, learn how to do it everywhere; even in your favorite document editing apps Word, Excel and PowerPoint. We’ve brought our common sharing experience to the Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps so that your content stays secure and your users feel confident securely sharing and collaborating no matter which app they are using. This feature will be available across Android and iOS in November.

Updated Recent View on OneDrive web

Rolling out in November

Over the next few months, we will be rolling out the new Recent view on the OneDrive web experience. Recent helps connect you to the files that you care about most and we’re updating the experience to make it simpler, faster and more satisfying to use. The new Recent will work better with Office files and you can expect to see future improvements for other file types as well.

New Manage Access Experience

Rolling out in November

We are beginning a rollout of the new Manage Access experience which aims to make it easy for users to see and control access to their files and folders. The new Manage Access makes it easier for users to add and remove individual users on links that work for Specific People as well as making it more clear what users are using what links. This experience will begin rolling out in November should complete rollout in December.

Access Request Actionable Messages now updates automatically and allows the user to change permission

Rolling out in November

Earlier this year, we shipped support for Outlook Actionable Messages in Access Request mails which allows users to manage access requests with a single click from their e-mail client. In November, we will ship two updates to the Access Request Actionable Message. First, we will now update the message card when it opens & tell the user if the access request has already been accepted or declined by another user. Second, users will now be able to choose whether the recipient will receive edit permission (the current default) or view permission.

OneDrive support for Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10 and Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11 support is ending on February 1st, 2019

The OneDrive team is committed to bringing you the best, most secure experience possible across your devices. To support that commitment, we must focus our resources on new technologies and operating systems that our users are adopting and minimize our investments where that isn’t the case. As such, we are ending support for the OneDrive Desktop application (sync client) on Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10 and Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11 effective February 1st, 2019.

Note: Both Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10 and Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11 are out of Apple’s mainline support since August 2017 and August 2018 respectively.

How users will be impacted on February 1st, 2019:

  • Existing OneDrive sync client installations on unsupported operating systems will stop updating. These clients will continue to run, but their functionality will no longer be tested. It is not advised to continue to run on these unsupported operating systems.
  • New installations on unsupported operating systems will be blocked.
  • Bugs and issues found on or specific to unsupported operating systems will no longer be investigated or fixed.

To ensure a smooth transition we recommend that you upgrade machines to Mac OS X 10.12 or above before February 1st, 2019. For the best user experience and longest support lifecycle, we recommend upgrading to macOS Mojave 10.14.

Is Manage Access Experience (the screenshot) for the web version or will it be replicated to desktop client also?

Microsoft

Hi @wroot,

This will rollout in the web first but we absolutely want to bring this into the desktop clients as well (via the common sharing dialog). Thanks!

You should listen to all the customer complaining of the iOS and Android app update that changed the search and toolbar, literally everyone at my collage paid ondrive storage upgrade to put every college document and make editing via the app, this new update change everything, literally Im looking for other apps if this inst fixed

, please read the comments, fix this is the middle of the semester. https://onedrive.uservoice.com/forums/913519-onedrive-on-ios/suggestions/35791084-bring-back-the-mod...

Hi @Stephen Rice,

Will the Access request also enable users to add new users to a Group (Owner, visitor, member) (like in the Classic environment) or is this something that is on the Roadmap? Now users are getting Unique permissions, this is something that is not expected for Classic or Modern SharePoint sites.

Thanks.

Cheers,

Will these new features appear only in OneDrive for Business, or will OneDrive Personal get them as well?

Microsoft

Hi @Edgar J.,

We have absolutely heard all of the feedback around the new annotation experience and the rest of the team is actively engaged and looking at this. We've rolled out a few updates & fixes already and have more on the way. We have absolutely seen the UserVoice post as well and are collating all of the feedback and prioritizing fixes accordingly. Thank you for your feedback!

Hi @Alexander Broere,

Yep, we are working on a fix for this as well and it is in active development. When the fix begins rolling out, I'll post to this thread so feel free to keep an eye on it.

Hi @Lance Whitney,

All of these features will be rolling out for OneDrive for Business only at this time but we plan to bring many of these improvements to OneDrive Personal eventually as well.

Thanks all!

Hi @Stephen Rice, when will Office 365 personal plans be upgraded to 2 TB or more? I ran out of my 1TB storage several months ago, and have since been postponing the move to Google or iCloud hoping it's only a matter time until OneDrive offers a 2 TB plan.

Thanks,

Raja

@Stephen RiceThanks for sharing the updates above. Can you provide some insight into how the Meeting Notes Sharing association works please? For example, if the meeting is held in a specific meeting room and the user takes a photo of the meeting notes while still in the meeting room and during the time period of the meeting, it would make sense that the Microsoft Graph could associate the location, the scan, and the timeframe with a calendar entry and thus a list of invitees. If the meeting notes are scanned outside of the meeting room and at a different time, will the same linkage be able to be created?

Microsoft

Hi @Michael Sampson,

I don't have all of the details of the magic that goes into this but I believe we're primarily looking using the meeting time as a way to do this. I do know there are some other smarts in there (for example, if you're talking a picture at 10:01, you're likely taking meeting notes of your 9:30-10:00 meeting, not the 10:00-10:30). I definitely recommend giving it a try and letting us know if you think there are ways to improve it though! Hope that helps!

I can't completely tell by the screenshot, it looks like the ellipses will reveal the ability to add users to links? Will it also be clearer who the users are the have access to links? The current method of hovering over icons drives our users batty, especially when there are 30+ Onetime Use Code users. We currently get around this with a PowerApp "report" using the MS Graph API.

Microsoft

Hi @Jaymz Yates,

There are two pieces. For specific people links, you can click a dropdown next to the user facepile that will open up a full name. Here is an example:

ManageAccessExample.png

From here you can remove individual users from the link as needed. The "..." menu takes you to a new panel that lets you see all of the link options as well as who the link has been shared to (in the case of anyone and organization links) and who the link works for (in the case of specific people links). You can also add new people to specific people links here as well.

Hope that helps!

In the new manage access experience I don't see the Advanced link anymore at the bottom of the panel. In some cases we need give 'full control' to a file or a folder and the Advanced link was an easy way to do that. Will it back at some point or will you offer the option 'Owner' in the list of access rights with Can view, can edit and stop sharing. Of course this option would only be available to owners of the site.

Brass Contributor

Two downsides concerning the new Manage Access experience in SharePoint:

  1. Changing permissions does the "break inheritance" behind the scene as expected. However there's no way to restore permission inheritance
  2. How can we assign our own custom permission levels

Is there a way to do this in the new experience? Is this being considered?

Steel Contributor

Same issue here. No way to restore inheritance, no custom permission levels. @Stephen Rice can you explain the reason of this? I don't get it….

Thanks.

SharePoint rights management:

I need to go in advanced mode to manage "read only" rights. This kind of rights are not manageable in the new view. This is a problem as users can now view folders that they not supposed to in our new shrepoint documents libraries.

Right now, I have to go in the old "Standard View". Hope this view will be still available for a long time. Am I the only SharePoint Admin that manage access right in this maner?

Thank's

Microsoft

@NicolasGuerder, there should be an "Advanced" link at the bottom of the new Manage Access pane. If you are not seeing it, please let me know :)

@Marco Santos, @Martin Coupal, @cp_csrs-2955, happy to provide some more context here. Our goal with the new pane was to A) help users understand how to manage direct access & links as easily as possible and B) provide a platform for future improvements. Dealing with broken inheritance and custom permissions are things that we absolutely want to look at in the future but require a little more thought due to the complexities involved. We definitely appreciate your feedback here!

Copper Contributor

@Stephen Rice, today I see the "Advanced" link where it should be. Yesterday it wasn't there, I am sure. I am very happy to have it back.

Have a good day!

Copper Contributor

@Stephen Rice We are still not able to see the "Advanced" link but looks like we are not the only one and it seems to come back eventually, so I will keep you in touch.

Brass Contributor

It's expected to be available to everyone soon. For more context on this subject you can follow this community thread.

Brass Contributor

Switching to the good feedback... @Stephen Rice putting aside what has already been reported that we'd like to have (permission inheritance and custom permissions) I must say that sharing links got a great improvement. It's now much easier to detect and manage them.

Microsoft

@NicolasGuerder, the Advanced link should be showing up now! If you're still not seeing it, let me know!

@Marco Santos, feedback of all kinds is appreciated :) I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the new experience!

Looks like the New Manage Access Experience is now gone… @Stephen Rice Any reasons why?

Microsoft

Hi @Martin Coupal,

We identified an issue with the new manage access pane and removed the experience while we make the fix. We are aiming to have it available again soon. Thanks!

Microsoft

Hey @Stephen Rice ,

I was told about the new capture capability in Onedrive and was excited to use it instead of Lens.  I found the capture and cropping faster than Lens.

BUT....  I found that when capturing a picture (which for me was just receipts to keep for my expense report) it name it with my last meeting request.  So where lens used to just call it a date/time stamps with office lens at the end as a picture, Onedrive annoying names it "name of last meeting" and then time/date stamp.  Even when I correct every picture to chop it out, it then asks me if I should share it with everyone from the last meeting.

As you know, people send calendar requests when they are off, so consequently 24x7 I am chopping crap out of the file name on EVERY use.  Is there a way to TURN THIS CALENDAR THING OFF?!?!

I have never taken a picture in a meeting and wanted to save it and share it with the meeting.  I can see where that would be useful, but if the camer is only designed for pictures in meetings, that's fine.  You hit a homerun.  So far, I went back to Lens.

Microsoft

Hi @The_Guru - thank you for the feedback on the Scanning feature in general, and the 'Meeting Sharing' feature in specific. We are glad to see that you've found scanning and editing document is OneDrive useful.  Based on feedback such as yours, we are working on some changes on the 'Meeting Sharing' aspect. As of right now, it cannot be turned off but improvements are coming and they should help with what you are sharing. Thank you for being a user and please keep the feedback coming!

Copper Contributor

Dear you all. I've read this 3d I'm facing an issue, I'm a corporate office 365 user but my laptop is a 10.11 Mac Osx, it's under the policy of the company (rent, upgrade locked and other security level policies) . then I cannot upgrade to 10.12.

Could you provide almost one older version before the End of the support?

otherwise I cannot use any kind of cloud tool on my macbook pro.

thanks in advance.

Copper Contributor

I have no expectations at all to seeing this resolved but I shall take the opportunity to rant a little.
I'm in the exact same position. I've been using my computer for years and it still does what I need to do (except this) so I won't be updating it until I really have to just to get something which many other companies offer (without the hassles) and I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Microsoft

Hi @DavidPeloBlanco and @beeitaly,

I chatted with a few other folks on the team and the short version is that we are ending support for OS X versions that are no longer being updated by Apple. We do this as we have historically seen that unsupported versions have APIs & libraries that fall out of date and thus end up breaking and causing other issues.

That being said, we don't prevent you from using OneDrive on those devices and it should continue to work until the system eventually hits one of these issues. Thanks!

Thank you for the time you've spent for me Stephen.

Maybe for a noob like, me, your answer is meaning that the previous version that run for El Capitain makes some issues and ccannot be available anymore?

I've another question for you. I've tried to launch the official Onedrive for mac but it says it's not possible to run in older o.s.

Could you bypass the limit and try to enable the latest release, even if with less functions?

my nees is only to manage the repository of my company. It's an enteprise account and I'm often out of office!

thanks

Microsoft

Hi @beeitaly,

Unfortunately we no longer support OneDrive on El Capitain as the sync client literally doesn't work on that particular version of the OS anymore (as described above). Thanks!

Hello Stephen

Can you please point me to the link where I can find the sych app for the old macs - I understand it is not supported any longer but need help to synch my documents /photos from the old machine to one drive.

Thank you

Hi @Sai007,

Is there a reason you can't update your Mac to a later version of macOS? Unfortunately we don't have an easy way to share old builds of the Mac client. Thanks!

Thank you Stephen. I have an old iMAC that cannot be upgraded due to the hardware. Thus need to back up the documents and pics etc from the computer onto One Drive. Please let me know if there is anyway to get the earlier version of Onedrive Sync client

"Manage Access experience" :cryingwithlaughter::xd::happyface::facepalm::facepalm::facepalm: I think this is a "Shoot self in the foot experience"
In the highly competitive world of online storage Microsoft locks out users instead of onboarding them and nurturing their business.
I can't imagine Dropbox, Adobe Cloud, Google Drive, iCloud or any other storage provider saying "Sorry. We're upgrading our product and we won't be providing a system for existing users to continue with it. Bye."

Copper Contributor

I was running the old OneDrive client on an early 2009 iMac 20" with Mac OS X Yosemite 10.11.6 until recently. It was in service for an AppleMail issue in December. They reinstalled El Capitan, but now I can't use OneDrive with it. Where can I download the old OneDrive client for use with Yosemite and El Capitan?
