Today at Microsoft Ignite 2017, we announced new innovations that further empower you to share and work together, to inform and engage people, to transform business processes, and to harness collective knowledge. Let’s look at the highlights of the many innovations we unveiled today.

Files On-Demand- this feature will start rolling out on Oct 17 and requires the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. One feature many of you may have noticed during the Insider Preview is the built-in functionality that allows you to preview over 270+ different files types without having to have that application installed. Below is an example an Adobe Illustrator file that is being previewed even though there is no Adobe Illustrator app on this machine. This is functionality we currently support via the web app that we have now brought to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update desktop.2.PNG

Silent Sync Auto-Account Configuration for OneDrive with ADAL- Microsoft Azure Active Directory Authentication Library will now support silent sync and account config for OneDrive. This will automatically configure OneDrive during a new device provisioning and ensure a new users OneDrive is automatically set up without any interaction required from the end user.

Microsoft 365 Powered Device with OneDrive- Today we demonstrated the Microsoft 365 Powered Device with OneDrive. Combining the power of Windows AutoPilot with Windows 10 RS3, Exchange Online w/ Office Click to Run and OneDrive Files On-Demand with ADAL, we showed how an IT admin can provision a fully powered PC over the air without any physical interaction with the device. Exchange Online helps to ensure that every email the user needs is there and OneDrive with ADAL and Files On-Demand, ensures that every file the users needs, is available to them seconds after log-in. This powerful toolset truly allows every administrator to support the replaceable PC scenario, everything important from the moment of crash, on every new device.

365 Powered device.PNG

Support for synchronization of libraries encrypted with Information Rights Management (IRM) or Digital Rights Management (DRM)- We will now fully support the synching or DRM/IRM libraries in OneDrive.

Simple and secure external sharing without a Microsoft account- As demoed this week, we will soon be supporting support external sharing with out the need for a Microsoft service account (MSA) by allowing you to create a one time use passcode to grant external users access to content.

7.PNG

User experience updates- We have made the OneDrive web UI cleaner and more intuitive in order for you to more easily see the impact of your work with others. In addition, we have made this update faster and more responsive to allow you to effortlessly find what you’re looking for. This allows you to be more productive with less effort. Quickly see what files and folders are new, what content has been shared with others as well as being able to see who has accessed the content and who has not with click of a single button via our new People Card and Info Pane.

EXPERIENCE.png

Share seamlessly with new, universal sharing in Office, Windows and Mac- With our updates to the sharing UI we have standardized sharing across Windows, Mac and Web. You will see this unified functionality coming to Office 2016 over the next few months.

Capture.PNG

Multi-Geo- For customers who want to control where each individual in their organization’s OneDrive resides, you will be able to take advantage of our multi-geo capabilities to decide on an individual by individual basis.

Service Level Encryption with Customer Key- This allows customers to meet regulatory and compliance obligations and have control by bringing their own keys to encrypt OneDrive and SharePoint data at rest.

Updates to OneDrive Admin Center- Now you can see active accounts, file activity and view all OneDrive Message Center messages right from the OneDrive admin console. We have also added a slider to make moving from most to least permissive sharing permissions easier.

5.png

We will have full support for workflows via Microsoft Flow in OneDrive rolled out by end of year.

Self Service Migration Toolkit- We are releasing a migration toolkit for self-service users looking to migrate from share drives or other cloud based services to OneDrive on their own.

Updates to our mobile client- To make our mobile client even easier to use, we are bringing a completely new ux to our mobile apps to make it easier than ever to access, share and manage your files on the go.

Open to modern web experience- When you click a Word or PowerPoint file in OneDrive web or opening a sharing link to a Word or PowerPoint file in your browser, you will now be put right into an edit mode allowing you to jump into working faster than ever.

Files Restore- will enable self-service recovery from disastrous events such as mass deletes, corruption, and other data loss scenarios.

RESTORE.png

Support for On-Prem customers with Android App- We are happy to announce we fully support our OneDrive On-Premise customers on the Android platforms.

Zip File Support- Now open zip files in the web view to see what’s inside and, pick and choose the files you would like to extract.

Integration of sync client into Mac Office- The OneDrive client will now be installed as part of the Office for Mac installation process.

Support for the OneDrive synch client we released early this year in SharePoint 2019

We are here all week so make sure to check out our video blogs starting tomorrow and deep dive pieces on these features starting next week!

Impressive list of enhancements

Would it be possible to have a bit more details on Self Service Migration Toolkit?

Thanks in advance

Copper Contributor

Great enhancements news.  Is there now the capability to drag and drop entire folders with files, from my local drive to One Drive? Previously I’ve only been able to transfer only individual files instead of organized file folders, which is incredibly time-consuming.  It’s the only reason my team and I are using Dropbox because it has this functionality.

Brass Contributor

Support for NGSC (next generation sync client) in SharePoint 2019, really?

Iron Contributor

Lots to digest today.

Copper Contributor

Woud've been great to see native support for High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIC) and High Efficiency Video Codec (HEVC).   Reducing file size consumption by half (w/o loss in quality) would be a huge win for users.

Brass Contributor

Hopefully the new Web UI will allow editing of metadata for pictures and song files finally?!?!  Please!  It's a pain to have to edit them on my computer and then resynch an entire file library because you don't synch just meta data changes.

Service Level Encryption with Customer Key

- does this mean an end-to-end encryption of data stored on OneDrive?

Copper Contributor

Still no support for .dng or hdr photos.   The photo/video capabilities of OneDrive is so far behind that it forces me to pay for additional storage to Google as their Photos support is outstanding.

Bronze Contributor
that "restore" feature caught me off guard. Love it!
Copper Contributor

Great enhancements. Still having difficulty "selling OneDrive" in our organisation.  One of the key problems here is that your "personal OneDrive or business OneDrive (that is assigned to you) is being called "OneDrive".

This made sense until the OneDrive app started surfacing SharePoint documents.

There needs to be a way to label the personal drive as something personal eg:  "MyDrive" (and also a way of distinguising between a personal OneDrive on Hotmail vs a personal OneDrive on a corporate Office365 account).

eg:  MyDrivePersonal  and MyDriveCompanyXYZ

What happened to differential sync for OneDrive which was on the roadmap for Q2 2017?
Copper Contributor

And can you tell us anything about file character support that we are waiting for? I think the roadmap had promised & and # still,  but I'm not sure the status...

Iron Contributor

Great stuff. OD4B is a much better product these days and it's good to see it getting loads of great enhancements.

As mentioned in another reply, the ability to rename the local folder - controlled via GPO - would be a great addition.

Something like;

OneDrive -samAccountname - abbreviation (where abbreviation is say, a 3 or 4 character abbreviation for the organisation).

;would be ideal for us. That way it's easily identifiable as the users own folder - within the organisation.

Just one idea 🙂

p.s. When is support for &, # and other special characters coming?

Copper Contributor

May I know how do I get to use this new feature: Sharing desktop notifications.

Do I need to update my OneDrive client or is this something that admin needs to turn on OneDrive Business?

Copper Contributor

"Support for synchronization of libraries encrypted with Information Rights Management (IRM) or Digital Rights Management (DRM)"

Does this also apply to libraries with check-out requirement?

Since the (forced) switch to the Next Generation Client, our libraries are only synchronized read-only, which is a disaster. We are currently converting to a professional DMS system.

Microsoft

ande Shane Bryan we released the update for # and % back in April. Post is here on how to enable that functionality,
Microsoft
Kristian Lutz Yes it does
Microsoft

- It will come to the product automaticly later this year
Microsoft

Jesse Cook Diff Sync is fully supported with all Office 2016 files in OneDrive

Microsoft

Kuba Wyrostek - All OneDrive data is currently fully encrypted at rest and in motion.

Copper Contributor

@Stephen Rose I believe it is against third parties, but end-to-end means that Microsoft cannot see the data, only user.

Love the enhancements!!!! Where do we get more information on the timelines for the rollouts and information on the actual changes?@stephen rose

Copper Contributor

How do  I access the new resote function? Or is that not released yet? In the demo/slide it is just "there".  Great demo at Ignite. We are converting our user home drives to OneDrive over the next few months.

Copper Contributor

Still no photos upload to OD4B

Makes no sense the need to have a personal Onedrive just for photos upload, when the O365 user has 1TB available.... and it is cinfusing for the end user.

Brass Contributor
@Stephen Rose What about file types other than office docs? Will there be diff sync support for other file types in the future?

The massive increase in the amount of file types that now get preview icons on the desktop is something I and others have been asking for years, so that's great. Have a lot of vector images I have to traverse routinely and this makes it so much easier to find what I need, the freeware preview codec packs are always problematic so very happy with this.

Only aspect that I was hoping for is that a larger (or better, resizable) preview window that can be invoked via a shorcut/mouse gesture on a file/files have been selected, ala Quick Look on OSX. The preview window in explorer has always been very cumbersome and slow to operate, would be great to just hit a key and get an instant dive into the file at an appropriate size.

Copper Contributor

Hi, any word about policy-driven Download bandwidth throttling?

Copper Contributor

Hi @Stephen Rose, @StephenRice, Would there be a single sync client for both SharePoint OnPremise Document Libraries and SharePoint Online Document Libraries and the OneDrive Online?

Till date we are using OneDrive for Business Client to sync our SharePoint 2013 OnPremise Document Libraries, which don't sync the IRM Enabled Documents. However we are able to sync the same in SharePoint 2016 OnPremise.

No concrete documentation regarding IRM + OneDrive +SharePoint On Premise (2013 as well as 2016) exists as of now. It would be really helpful if you guys can help me out in this.

Copper Contributor

@Stephen Rose So many great news! 2017 has definetly been the year when OD4B starting to be competetive with the others on this market! How about support for Files on demand in Mac OS, is that in any timeschedule?

Copper Contributor

Great enhancements really

but still lack of support for opening  other file types..indeed it needs add-in or integrations from app providers to open a specific file on the web just like what Google drive does.. Or outlook integrations do either.

Microsoft

We expect that to launch in Nov. More details as we get closer to launch. It is geared at 500 seats or less. Customer migrating over 500 seats can use our free Fast Track service

One other aspect of the more recent Onedrive upgrades (basically since Files on Demand was introduced in the build) is extremely high CPU usage when scrolling through a folder in explorer with lots of thumbnails.

Granted I only have a dual-core Pentium AE (@ 4.2ghz), however with the Onedrive client closed I get Explorer.exe CPU spikes to 35% when navigating a thumbnail-heavy folder on my local Onedrive storage, and scrolling with the mousewheel remains responsive. With the Onedrive client loaded however, scrolling through the same folder produces Explorer.exe spikes (well more like constant) CPU usage of upwards of 70%, and scrolling is extremely jerky and unresponsive. This wasn't the case before the Files on Demand (or new file type previews).

I've submitted feedback on this today in the Feedback hub. Is this a known issue?

Copper Contributor

That's quite an amazing list, you guys are rocking it!

Great to see you again Stephen, can't wait for all the stuff in the pipleline, too.

Copper Contributor

What is happening with Explorer view of non-synched OneDrive files?  This was removed years ago, and was promised to return.  I have a bigger OneDrive than my SSD's can handle.  I need to see all my files in Explorer.

Copper Contributor
Iron Contributor

Is there a list of the 270+ file types that will be supported in OneDrive and the expected timeframe?  I am looking for .mov support.  I would like to be able to play these videos without downloading, both in SharePoint Doc Libraries and OneDrive.   It seems that I can view some .mov files today but not others.

Copper Contributor

@Stephen Rose

Hi Stephen,

I run the Creaters Update and OneDrive Files On-Demand. But the sharepoint libraries that require check-in and check-out are still synchronized only as read-only libraries, with a small gray lock icon.

I assumed, and you also confirmed, that the full support of DRM/IRM libraries in OneDrive solves this problem? What am I supposed to do?

Thanks.

Microsoft
Copper Contributor

Thanks for the quick answer. I'm gonna try this.

All the best

Microsoft

I've put together a script that also enables some OneDrive restore functionality based on the file version history.  You can read about it at https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/undocumentedfeatures/2017/10/16/recovering-from-crypto-or-ransom.... I definitely am looking forward to being able to point users toward the self-service restore.

Brass Contributor

The left pane of the user experience screenshot shows the words ‘Shared’ as opposed to ‘Shared with me’. Do you know if the ‘Shared’ view will list all the files and folders that a user has shared with others?

My current OneDrive folder view shows a sharing icon on each of the shared folders, but I need to navigate for many pages to see all the shared content. A consolidate view would be very helpful.

Copper Contributor

Will OneDrive get any faster? It still seems very much slower than Dropbox when synchronising files by an order of magnitude...

Copper Contributor

Not sure where I'll get a response... "Silent Sync Auto-Account Configuration for OneDrive with ADAL" is this only available for devices AAD joined? What about AAD registered BYOD scenarios? Is there any way to sign in the user to OneDrive automatically after registering their device with MDM?

where we can locate the self migration kit?
