New File Viewers for OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams

OneDrive's vision is to enable you to share and work together on all your files in a simple and secure way, inclusive of your personal files as well as the files you create and manage in shared spaces like SharePoint and Microsoft Teams.  A foundational element to this is providing users with quick and easy access to those files across devices regardless of the file type.

To support this, we’ve continued to invest in and improve our file viewing technology and currently support over 300 file types. This enables users to get high-fidelity previews and thumbnail images for Adobe formats, like Photoshop and Illustrator, 3D files or DICOM medical images without actually installing the native application.

OneDrive provides thumbnails for Files On-DemandOneDrive provides thumbnails for Files On-Demand

For customers running Files On-Demand in Windows 10, these thumbnails allow you to quickly scan through files and find what you are looking for without needing to download and open files.

With the OneDrive web client, if I share an Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator file with someone, all someone needs to do is open the file in any browser. That user will then get a full-screen preview of the file without requiring the actual Adobe application to be installed on that device.

What’s great is we offer this experience for over 300 of the most commonly used file types. We have even added the ability to listen to audio tracks or watch videos stored in OneDrive, right from your browser or the OneDrive mobile app.

Here’s the full list of file types currently supported for web previewing and thumbnails via Files On-Demand.

Hi Stephen. I will go to uservoice any check in but are we missing mp3?

Microsoft

Phillip,

It's there under Audio :)

Former Employee
Great summary! I don't have a lot of files in my ODFB but I have plenty in my personal OneDrive. Can you share what kind of performance improvements you've made lately?
Copper Contributor

Microsoct project files?

Iron Contributor

I have a Document Library with .dwg files. I configure the library to open documents in the browser, but when I click on the .dwg file it asks me to download it.

How can I view a .dwg file in a document library from within the browser?

Copper Contributor

Stephen, it's great that the new file viewers have been released, but it would be better if the existing ones were made to work first. Previews of EML or MSG files are still not supported for Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Arabic languages. In fact, even when email content does not contain any characters from the above languages, if it was sent by a user whose Office or Windows is installed in any of the above languages, the preview will fail because the PDF converter will reject it. EML or MSG files are the types of files that can be displayed in a browser natively, and users would be very happy to look at it this way instead of seeing the "looks like this file doesn't have the a preview we can show you" message. They also don't understand why they get this error message after being able to see the mini preview of the file in its details pane.

@Stephen Rose any indication on Autodesk Revit and Bentley Systems file support?

Microsoft

John,

We are continually working with third parties to get permissions to support their file types. Please add your requests to UserVoice so we can track them as it helps us when we are talking to these partners.

Steel Contributor

Excellent

Copper Contributor

I would like to put in a request for FLAC.

I see a lot of people on a number of different forums make this request.

Microsoft

@Ian Robertson, thanks for your feedback! Microsoft Project files are definitely on the backlog!

Microsoft

@Russell Gove, we currently support only thumbnails for dwg files, but full file previews are on the roadmap! Stay tuned. :)

Microsoft

@Elena Nakhmanson, thanks for the feedback and sorry that you are running into issues with viewing files containing special characters. This is a real pain point and is on our radar as we continue to make investments in improving the viewer usability.

Iron Contributor

Does this only apply to Teams in a broswer or does it work with the Teams desktop application?

Microsoft

Both the web and the desktop applications for Teams have viewer support. This feature is currently broken though and the engineering team is working to fix it in Production. It is expected to start working again in a few weeks.

Copper Contributor

I have .ARW phot files saved in OneDrive but still today, they can´t be seen or open within the app or in web app.

Copper Contributor

This is all good, a step forward, but what about onedrive personal? It's a paid service too, why not implement these features as well?

"Onedrive.com supports
RAW photo files, but the Onedrive for Business photo gallery doesn't...."

This is partially true, onedrive.com used to supports older NEF files, like the ones produced by a Nikon D3100 but the newer models don't, like a D7000, the funnier thing is at some point in time those older files had a preview, I remember watching them online, but at this moment not even the older ones work. Any thoughts? Thank You!

Iron Contributor

I agree this is all good however after suggesting to our users to use this feature and to find out that it is not working is a bit embarrassing.

Microsoft

Scott Preston,

What do you mean that it's not working? Can you be more specific?

Are you using SharePoint Online or OneDrive? The desktop view does require Windows 10 for the thumbnails but you should be able to leverage the previews via the web client unless you're using OneDrive on Prem.

Let me know what issues you are seeing as we'd like to help.

Iron Contributor

@Stephen Rose When I am using Teams Desktop application the File Preview does not work. See a few comments up where @Ketaki Sheode Tells me that the feature is currently broken.

Works fine in Sharepoint Online but I was looking for it to work in Teams application. PDF's function as expected in Teams but not CR2 files.

Brass Contributor

@Ketaki Sheode @Russell Gove I would like my users to open and edit DWG files directly online, is this possible somehow?

Copper Contributor

-The OneDrive Team

@Stephen Rose so all of this is just for onedrive for business? If so why though, it makes no sense to me as a customer.

Microsoft

@Riccardo Amadi, editing DWG files directly from OneDrive/SharePoint and saving back is currently not supported.

Microsoft

@Adriano Santos, file previews for most of the files on this list are also supported on OneDrive Consumer. If there is a specific format you are interested in and is not already supported, please add or upvote the request at  https://onedrive.uservoice.com.

Microsoft

@Edgar Villalobos, ARW file previews are supported. Could you share details about the issue you are seeing? Are you using OneDrive for Business/SharePoint Online or OneDrive Consumer?

Iron Contributor

@Ketaki Sheode

Do you have any indication as to when the feature of file previews in Microsoft Teams Desktop will be fixed? Been asked by many users now if it will be available.

@Stephen Rose

Are you able to help? Other file types appear to be able to preview fine in Microsoft Teams Desktop which is a good thing however the added support for the other files (particularly CR2) would be brilliant if it worked.

Copper Contributor

@Ketaki Sheode , I posted this a couple of days ago:

This is all good, a step forward, but what about onedrive personal? It's a paid service too, why not implement these features as well?

"Onedrive.com supports

As soon as I got an email saying a problem has been solved I went straight to my consumer onedrive and tried to preview my NEFs (RAW) and nothing worked, using the same browser I went to my professional onedrive and it worked there. I tried this at 2 different computers with the same result; I have shared folders with friends at my consumer account and for the last 2 or 3 years they can only see the JPEG files I produce. Regarding upvoting, well unfortunately my 10 votes are all out there, I opened a suggestion and theres nothing more I can do unless try to reach out here, but since you say almost every format is available at both consumer and professional why not try it out just for the fun of it, maybe im having some sort of malfunction or my account has a problem and I never noticed until now.

Microsoft

@Scott Preston, the fixes for viewers in Teams are rolling out and it should be available again in a few weeks. I'll share an update when it is back on.

Microsoft

Hi @Adriano Santos, I just tried opening NEF files in OneDrive Business and Consumer and they worked fine in both places. Would you mind opening a support ticket with details on the issue you are facing so we can help investigate? Thanks!

Copper Contributor

Hi @Ketaki Sheode, well that seems odd cause I tried doing that with a friends account and he can't see them either, at this point I don't know, maybe I have some kind of problem with my account so to clear that out I shared a random nef image from my storage , he uploaded it to his storage and he can't see it too. Another thing, the forum for onedrive is locked so no technical help there.... Am I doing something wrong cause doesn't feel like it, it seems to me for some reason only some nef files work at the consumer account and only the business account has full support.

locked.JPG

Microsoft

Hi @Adriano Santos, I checked with the engineering team and for raw files, we only support certain formats. For example, for NEF, we support only certain camera models, depending on how they emit the file. I will work with Marketing to make the messaging more clear around this. Thanks for your feedback!

Copper Contributor

 Hi @Ketaki Sheode, thanks for your reply, well yes it would be nice for users to know that kind of information. Regarding my case it seems it's not related that, the same files on different accounts have diferent behaviours, l tested this on 4 onedrive consumer accounts, lets say A B C and D, I shared my photos with 4 persons and they uploaded them to their cloud and shared their folders with me, coming up to the following results;

A is able to preview all files no problem at all.

B and C can preview some files, lets imagine B can preview file 123 but C doesn't although B previews file 124 and C doesn't, you get the ideia.

D (my account) shows no preview at all.

So with this logic, since all 4 accounts are onedrive consumer all should work the same, but they don't. I have opened a ticket and im waiting for an answer from the support team, wish me luck! Thanks again!

Iron Contributor

For anyone interested. I was unable to preview .CR2 files direct in Microsoft Teams but since the update to version 1.1.00.14359 (64 bit) of the Teams client I am now able to preview my CR2 files direct in the desktop client. Maybe worth a check to see if any other issues commented about have been fixed.

Brass Contributor

Would it be possible to get previews of *.xps and *.oxps files in OneDrive for Business?

That is sadly still missing :(.

A.Salon

Brass Contributor

Central european letters (slavic) within *.msg files are not being displayed properly when viewing in OneDrive for Business. Any chance to get it fixed?

Microsoft

@Afghan Salon, thanks for your feedback! Would you mind adding the request for XPS and OXPS to uservoice? I will reach out to our engineering team to figure out why Slavic characters are not being displayed properly in MSG files.

Copper Contributor

@Ketaki Sheode, is there any progress made on previewing EML and MSG files? I need to stress the urgency of making it work in our part of the world (Asia). Our users still get "looks like this file doesn't have the a preview we can show you" error message even if email content is in English only.

Copper Contributor
I'd like to see Gerber and HPGL formats added so went to https://onedrive.uservoice.com as suggested, but couldn't see any existing items to upvote. Do I need to post a new request or is there some other way of refining/filtering what I'm looking at so I can see similar requests and avoid duplication?
Microsoft

@Jonathan Finney, please create a new request for this one. Thanks!

@Elena Nakhmanson, I am tracking this request on my backlog, but I have no timelines to communicate on this yet.

Brass Contributor

@Ketaki Sheode I has allready been requested on UserVoice...in 2014 -but still missing. Please inspect 1 and 2. Are You in charge to move it forward?

@Stephen Rose I had a really clever ODC customer who is looking for online MTS support... and has gone to User Voice to request it. When looking at our support article it shows MTS isn't currently supported, but according to this blog post it

https://onedrive.uservoice.com/forums/913528-onedrive-on-the-web/suggestions/35207449-allow-mts-vide...

https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Video-formats-you-can-play-on-the-OneDrive-website-07c008b2... .

Just FYI but it seems there is a mismatch with the information currently, I am going to work with content to verify and correct.

Copper Contributor

My photos are not showing up as thumbnails either on my onedrive personal.. Camera is sony A7III and files are in ARW format. When I click on the image it says 'looks like this file doesn't have a preview we can show you' and prompts me to download the file instead. It has been over 2 years since I had this problem when I migrated over from a canon to sony.Pls fix this already Microsoft!!

Copper Contributor

@@Ketaki Sheod You mentioned that the support for full preview of dwg files are on the roadmap. Can you indicate if that could be completed before the end of 2018? I was unable to find any indication of this feature on the Microsoft 365 roadmap tool.

AutoDesk is going to end of life their legacy platform in January and it would be ideal to have this available to be able to move these files to SharePoint. The current user experience is less than ideal for these files. On click, Teams loads blurry/misaligned thumbnails into full screen.

Ketaki Sheode says: "Russell Gove, we currently support only thumbnails for dwg files, but full file previews are on the roadmap! Stay tuned. :)"

Microsoft

Brett,

We do an interview with AutoDesk on stage  in our What's New With OneDrive at Ignite session. I will encourage you to check that one out regarding the larger previews and editing. We are working to have thumbnail previews in the next few months.

Copper Contributor

@Stephen Rose Thanks for referring me to the video.

In the video, Prakash mentions "Our aim is to really, make sure you're able to open it in OneDrive and view them in AutoCad App, within a web browser". And then you mention the Previewer / Icon Previewer feature.

So I'm really unclear on what that means for O365 vs the AutoDesk platform (BIN360). Is he saying that I should expect native viewing support for DWG files for SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive or that their goal is to make the AutoDesk platform cloud based and leverage what you are doing for OneDrive? And obviously there was no timeline given for this stuff so it's a safe bet previewing the files (large view since thumbnails of giant cad files aren't useful") wouldn't be available before Jan 31, correct?

Brass Contributor

@Stephen Rose ePub files can't be viewed online on my tenant. How it's possible?epub file stored on my SPO siteepub file stored on my SPO site

@BigZdzislaw

We do support the preview thumbnail of the ePUB doc. In order to open and view, you will have to have a ePUB viewer installed in the browser

Brass Contributor

@Stephen Rose Thanks for reply, but

I do not have any preview thumbnail and what's more both on Chrome (MagisScroll installed) and Firefox (EPUBReader installed) am unable to get what I want - to open ePUB files stored either on ODFB or SharePoint Site.

Would You mind posting any screenshots proving possibility.

Thank You
