Happy new year and welcome to 2021. We are thrilled to begin this year with some exciting news.

As remote work and learning increases so does the need to reliably and securely share large files-4K or 8K video files, 3D models, CAD files, or large scientific data sets-with co-workers, clients and peers.  At Microsoft we're perpetually working to enable and support workers all over the world.  We are always striving to innovate and empower our users to be more productive. At the same time, we are extremely grateful to our customers and partners for all the helpful and insightful feedback – particularly in industries such as heavy manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, and media for our latest enhancement.

We’re listening! And we are pleased to announce that we’re making it easier than ever for you to store, sync, and share large files in Microsoft 365. Our latest improvement will help increase the upload file size limit for Microsoft 365 from 100 GB to 250 GB—which includes uploads of files into SharePoint, Teams, and OneDrive. So now, you will be able to easily share large files like a 3D model of a new building, a client commercial shot in 8K video, a large dataset for a vaccine trial or research projects or large videos for educational projects. And this change doesn’t just apply to businesses and schools. If you use OneDrive, for personal use, you can easily upload or your family video album to share with your relatives or upload that zip file containing a large PC game with your friends.

We’ve achieved the 250 GB limit by optimizing storage for upload performance—each file is split into chunks and each piece is encrypted with a unique key. All your files are backed up in Azure Storage, ensuring high availability and performance. You can easily upload and download your large files when you need them, where you need them.

And you need not worry about syncing these large files - with differential sync, only the changes that you and your collaborators make are synced—shortening the amount of time it takes you to sync, helping improve performance and reducing network utilization. Finally, as always, your files are always with you on any device, wherever you go, whether you’re editing files in OneDrive, sharing projects for review in SharePoint, or collaborating in Teams.

Support for 250 GB file size upload will be available by end of this quarter.

we all need more Up- and Download Speed, but that's great

That's great!  Now can we get 2TB storage with our accounts?  Thanks!

Wow this news good and we would be more productive with more space

So the speed would be increased for Upload and Download?

Thanks

Great news, does that change any of the limitations around moving or copying files in SharePoint?

Copying/Moving multiple files in a single operation has three requirements:

No more than 100 GB total file size

No more than 30,000 files

Each file must be less than 2 GB

@Todd L  No, no more storage.
In the early days we are able to up/Download files up to 15 GB  - then Microsoft increases to 100 GB per File, and now 250 GB per File

@Todd L Depending on what SKU of Office 365 you have, you may have support for up to Unlimited storage space, though you may need to contact MS Support to increase it beyond 5TB of storage space per user.

and because these are probably likely next questions

Back when the upload limit was 2GB we had a calculation of 1TB and 500 mb per licensed purchased.  When you guys went to 15gb limit we were granted 1TB and 10gb per licensed purchased.  Now we're at 100gb and no new calculation for storage and now we're getting another limit of 250gb.  When are we going to get a larger storage allocation with all these new large files?  I'm hoping for another 40x with all these new limits, especially since Stream will soon be storing all of it's data into SharePoint instead of the Stream container.  People will run out of space soon and need to either purchase more storage or start deleting things.  Users don't like when you delete their content.

This is very good and an appropriate feature upgrade!

Brass Contributor

@Jamie Luce did you see my links above about how to expand your available storage to higher amounts?

What License level of Office 365 do you have and how many users?

Pretty much anything E3 or higher can have access to 5TB right away, and more than that (if needed) by contacting Microsoft Support. If you have that much to store, it would probably be better stored in a Team Site Library though anyway

Does this apply to the US Gov clouds as well?

As others stated, now please work on download performance from SharePoint Online through browsers.  Coming from almost any disparate network (my home, multiple businesses' locations) with ample bandwidth (1Gbps down), something as simple as a 4GB file will randomly timeout or the download will prematurely stop when coming directly from a SharePoint Online URL. (And yes, we've engaged Premier on this with no real resolution)

But if you select and download multiple files or a whole folder so that they have to zip & route through a proxy ([dc]-mediap.svc.us) instead of a SPO endpoint this never, ever happens. Downloads of 20, 30, 50GB, etc "just work".  So this is definitely where SPO needs some work!

Support for uploading 250GB single files means nothing if you can't reasonably expect to download/upload them without problems...

Copper Contributor

This is great news! The more upload size the better.

When I want to purchase for OneDrive for Business plan 1 plan 2, there is still a 100GB limit in the description details. Where can I buy a OneDrive subscription with a 250GB single file limit? I would like to buy one to transfer veeam backups (180GB single file) but it still appears as 100GB on the purchase screens. Can you help me with this? I called the microsoft line of my country, they did not know, even it was written on their screen as 15GB. I guess there is some un-updated information or misunderstanding somewhere. waiting for your support, thanks in advance.

king regards

This is great !

Since Microsoft gives us 1TB of OneDrive storage every user hopes this will increase as well 🤭

Why? That's the the capacity of "One" =  1 file
And think about the speed, it takes hours for sync !
