Add to OneDrive is generally available

Files are the building blocks of our work— helping us collaborate with others to construct the end results. Research documents, data spreadsheets, sales reports, presentations, product videos and other content-rich files are the components that hold up our final deliverable.

“Where can I find that file?” It’s a question we’ve all asked our colleagues, our teams, and, most often, ourselves countless times but not anymore. Today, we are happy to announce our previously disclosed feature Add to OneDrive is now generally available. Now, instead of figuring out the who sent us that file or remembering the original location of the shared content, we can swiftly get back to the files we need, directly within our OneDrive.

Add to OneDrive makes it easy to add a shortcut to the shared folders directly to our OneDrive. Shared folders include content that others have shared with us through their OneDrive, which surfaces in the “Shared with me“ view or content that is a part of a shared library in Microsoft Teams or SharePoint.

With Add to OneDrive, not only can we bring all our shared content into one place, but we can also work with the shared content with the same power and flexibility as if they are files we own. This means we can easily sync and access these folders from anywhere on any device; securely share and co-author files in the added folder; and stay up to date with @mentions, activity, and notifications. Added folders respect all existing policies, compliance, and security settings, too.

Added folders can be synced to your device for anytime anywhere access.Added folders can be synced to your device for anytime anywhere access.

Since we've started rolling out Add to OneDrive to production, we have been humbled by the overwhelming response to the feature in terms of feedback and usage. OneDrive is a foundational product in our effort to power a seamless, connected files experience in Microsoft 365 and features like Add to OneDrive help us in achieving not only easy access to our important content but also efficient organization of files that matter the most to us.

Note: For the next few months, the admins will be able to disable Add to OneDrive for their organizations. This temporary choice is available to help admins drive any required change management with ease. We will inform you before removing this option to opt-out of the feature.

If you choose to opt-out, use the Set-SPOTenant command via Admin PowerShell. The command is Set-SPOTenant -DisableAddShortcutsToOneDrive $true
When the feature is disabled, the command to add folders will be removed; any folders that have already been added will remain on the user’s computer

This is a good feature, but it's kind of a bummer how much space it takes up in that menubar - and the (to me) more important file feature that get shoved off to the right or into the more menu (like Move/Copy).

Silver Contributor

Isn't it only showing when clicking on folders/files in Shared with me view? Or do you often need to Move/Copy files in that view (if it is even possible)?

@wroot I see it in SharePoint doc libraries as well. Here's what I see on my main monitor. Plenty of more useful features are hidden in the overflow menu.

Delete

Rename

Move

Copy

Silver Contributor

Yeah, it takes too much space. Maybe it could be just "Add to OneDrive". Although that would sound like Copy. Moving it to overflow will make it less discoverable. I guess the only option here is to allow users to customize the order of buttons on that menu.

Useful feature, is there a decision point to show this or not?

How can admin disable this?

Steel Contributor

What's the minimum version of the OneDrive sync client that support this.as I am seeing older versions don't sync the linked folders. Newer versions do...

I looked for this info and could not find under which version this was added.

@Ankita Kirti - Could you post the directions for disabling "Add to OneDrive"? I'm not finding the documentation in any of the articles linked in this blog post. I also checked the documentation for Set-SPOTenant PowerShell cmdlet and didn't find any new parameters that appear to control this setting.

Thanks

@Philip Worrell So I have found out: 20.174.0830.0002 But you also read my blog Post
I use 20.201.1005.0008 (Insiders) : and one more article

See I’m the opposite. I want sync disabled and this to be the only option. Add to onedrive works so much better for two big reasons.

1. it saves regardless of where you access onedrive and on all sync clients.
2. it cleans up way better than sync as it will only leave behind files that haven’t synced or had issues. Everything else is removed from the machine when removing shortcuts unlike sync which leaves behind all synced files in a non synced folder or basically a local copy (not on demand files however). This is huge.

@Chris Webb but it works only with internal users , for external you still have to use "Shared with me" with all the issues, you have described .I have several devices, I do not sync all stuff on all machines.

Thanks @Hans Brender

Customer appears to be on Deferred ring. 20.114.0607.002 that was released in July.

It doesn't yet appear to have it available to sync these links. One of the downsides of lagging behind.

I tried it on another PC not on that channel and it all work

So they will just have to wait for the next update.

I underestimated how useful this feature is.
It will be my number 2 feature to help people adopt working with files in Microsoft 365

Shortcuts are familiar to people working with file shares. They reduce the time navigating to all the different locations we store files. OneDrive shortcut files meet this need with the added bonus of syncing to the places we use OneDrive, and continue to support Files on Demand.
Use OneDrive shortcuts in your Adoption campaigns to support people’s new way of working, using files in the Microsoft 365 cloud.

Microsoft continues its renewed love affair with folders, eschewing metadata as a way to organize content. The first stage of this renewal came when folders were used to organize Team channel conversations -- something that should have been done using metadata instead (indeed, I get around this by setting default metadata values on channel folders and then hiding folders--would that i didn't have to employ a workaround). While I love the concept of Add to OneDrive, why is the feature restricted to libraries and folders, and not files? Hopefully the latter is on the MS Roadmap. Or maybe in my government tenant I'm not seeing the latest and greatest. The latest/greatest would be an ability to Add to OneDrive either a single file or a set of them corresponding to specific metadata values. Oh, but I long for the days when folders were seen as the obfuscating organizer they are, and metadata was the heroine deserving of our love. #DieFoldersDie

I have added the directions to disable.

Steel Contributor

We need a simple way to see the source of the folder. General folders can not be renamed and are hard to separate if you have linked more than one general folder.

If you Add to OneDrive (Add ShortCut to MyFiles) you see the folder General.
And you can Rename to any Name like you want. Its only the ShortCut  you renamed, not the Source
So then you can Add another General Folder with Add ShortCut to My Files

@Hans Brender , Thank you! It worked nicely, very good blog post, thank you for sharing!

Thanks @Ankita Kirti ...

Add to onedrive is a spectacular feature; I've been waiting for it for a long time.
However, I feel that I am still doing something wrong. Every shared folder I add ends up in my root directory and when I move it the link is broken and a copy is downloaded.

How can I move the shortcut to the right place in my Onedrive structure?

@Daniel_Anklin : So that's normal, all Shortcuts are in the root folder; If you move the data, this broke the shortcut.
But youn can rename the Shortcuts. I bring them to the Top with "_xxxx"

Copper Contributor

Have found to be a bit of bummer glitch. When disabling the "Sync" option in the library settings is also disables the shortcut link to the document library in OneDrive and will not allow it to be linked again although the button is still available in the menu.

Maybe im doing something wrong but my understanding is that they are two seperate functions and switching Sync on or off should not affect the Shortcut function.

@JJshared Sync (classic sync) and Add a shortcut to my files are the not exact the same technology but belongs to sync.  And Disable "sync" means sync disable to both technics.

Copper Contributor

I just come here trying to found a solution to disable shortcuts. The commandline didn't find the "DisableAddShortCurtsToOneDrive".

Is there any chance the command isn't available anymore?

"Set-SPOTenant : A parameter cannot be found that matches parameter name 'DisableAddShortCutsToOneDrive'.
At line:1 char:15
+ Set-SPOTenant -DisableAddShortCutsToOneDrive $True"

Copper Contributor

@Hans Brender Is there a way to disable "Sync" but not "Add Shortcut"?

Bronze Contributor

We now know there's no way to disable "Add Shortcut," which would be fine aside from the fact that there may be no way to disable the "Sync" button....

Update: After seeing posts that the above-mentioned Powershell to hide Add Shortcut was still working, at least if you have a current SharePoint Online Management Shell (I tested the one from early June 2021), I can confirm that it does still work, though what it says when you implement it makes me wonder for how long: "WARNING: Users in your organization will no longer be able to add new shortcuts to their OneDrive while the feature is in Public Preview. However, existing shortcuts will remain functional."

And for those wanting to do the opposite, meaning keep Add Shortcut and hide Sync, there's a way to do that, too, apparently very new since I had to notice it myself in Get-SPOTenant:

Set-SPOTenant -HideSyncButtonOnTeamSite $true

WARNING: Users in your organization will no longer be able to use the "Sync" button to sync TeamSite content. However, existing synced content will remain functional, and users can still sync content via their OneDrive using the Add shortcut command.

Copper Contributor

The "HideSyncButtonOnTeamSite" parameter would be a godsend for us, but it does not seem to be available in our tenant yet (and Google searches only lead to this discussion - great find, @Brian . !) I have contacted MS support requesting an opt in, if possible.

Bronze Contributor

Our tenant is opted in to the Targeted Release, so that is probably why:

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/admin/manage/release-options-in-office-365?view=o365-...

When it is available, you'll see it listed near the bottom of Get-SPOTenant.

Copper Contributor

Makes sense. I couldn’t find it mentioned in the roadmap, hopefully they won’t be changing their minds on this one.

Copper Contributor

I have an user, User was trying to add to shortcut, after he successfully add to shortcut.

In OneDrive for business "Owner" is spelled Eirer, it should be "Eier"

Hari_Aryan2307_0-1636581584516.png

There is no name to edit, it is an actual word for "Owner" which is in Norweigian is "EIER". It's displayed as "EIRER"

@Hari_Aryan2307 . You should open a ticket with Microsoft- it must be a translation error

Copper Contributor

@Brian . Would you be so kind as to check whether you still have the “HideSyncButtonOnTeamSite” option available in your tenant? Microsoft Support feigns ignorance on the topic - and Google searches for the term still leads only to this discussion and your comment.

Bronze Contributor

@jm Because it might matter, with the way things can either be added or removed, I updated SharePoint Online Management Shell first (to the November 2021 update), but "HideSyncButtonOnTeamSite" is still there and on True for us. It's still not for you? It should be among the last 10 that you see when looking with Get-SPOTenant.

Copper Contributor

@Brian . Still not there for me - and we are on Targeted release.

Set-SPOTenant : A parameter cannot be found that matches parameter name 'HideSyncButtonOnTeamSite'.

Bronze Contributor

@jm If you do a Get-SPOTenant, what are the last 10 items you see? I'll compare with mine to see if you're missing anything else (they're chronological).

Copper Contributor

@Brian . These are the last 10:

BlockSendLabelMismatchEmail : False
LabelMismatchEmailHelpLink :
DisableAddToOneDrive : False
EnableAutoNewsDigest : True
Workflow2010Disabled : True
StopNew2010Workflows : False
BlockUserInfoVisibility :
DisablePersonalListCreation : False
DisabledModernListTemplateIds : {}
DisableSpacesActivation : False

Brass Contributor

@Ankita Kirti we have a case open, if you use the "add to onedrive" linked folder, if you have a shared file and you move it, the share breaks. this only happens when you work via the linked folder.

Bronze Contributor

@jm For context, we're on Targeted too (E1 with some Bus Ent--what are you?), but yours seems to have stopped and is also missing some along the way. Even looking at ours that I saved from last June shows 4 additional ones. Currently, there are 8 more. Overall, 115.

Here's ours picking up from where yours starts:

BlockSendLabelMismatchEmail : False
LabelMismatchEmailHelpLink :
DisableAddToOneDrive : False
EnableAutoNewsDigest : True
Workflow2010Disabled : False
StopNew2010Workflows : False
StopNew2013Workflows : False
DisableBackToClassic : False
BlockUserInfoVisibility :
BlockUserInfoVisibilityInOneDrive : ApplyToNoUsers
BlockUserInfoVisibilityInSharePoint : ApplyToNoUsers
AllowOverrideForBlockUserInfoVisibility : False
InformationBarriersSuspension : True
IBImplicitGroupBased : False
DefaultOneDriveInformationBarrierMode : Explicit
DisablePersonalListCreation : False
DisableListSync : False
DisabledModernListTemplateIds : {}
DisableSpacesActivation : False
HideSyncButtonOnTeamSite : True
AllowGuestUserShareToUsersNotInSiteCollection : False
ChannelMeetingRecordingPermission : Editable
DisableOutlookPSTVersionTrimming : False
StreamLaunchConfig : 0
MediaTranscription : Enabled
ViewInFileExplorerEnabled : False
AuthContextResilienceMode : DefaultAAD

Copper Contributor

@Brian . Ours is E5 Developer, we don't dare run Targeted on our E3 tenant. I will contact Microsoft and ask for an explanation why we seem to be lagging behind.

Copper Contributor
