Modern IT emphasizes working with people, processes, and technologies to continuously deliver business value. If you have these skills, DevOps Engineer Expert is the role-based certification for you.

To earn the DevOps Engineer Expert certification, you must pass Exam AZ-400: Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions and you must earn either the Azure Administrator Associate or the Azure Developer Associate certification. You can take care of these requirements in any order you’d like—as long as you have either the Azure Administrator or Developer certification and you’ve passed Exam AZ-400.

This certification a good fit for you if your responsibilities include designing and implementing strategies for collaboration, code, infrastructure, and source control, along with security, compliance, continuous integration, testing, delivery, monitoring, and feedback. You should have experience working with people, processes, and technologies to continuously deliver business value. Additionally, you should be familiar with (or expert in) Azure administration and development. The certification is a great way for system administrators or developers to prove their expertise in DevOps.

How can you get ready?

To help you plan your journey, check out our infographic, The journey to Microsoft Certified: DevOps Engineer Expert. You can also find it in the resources section on the certification and exam pages, which contains other valuable help for DevOps Engineers.

Be sure that you have a prerequisite certification for this exam—either Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate.

Next, to understand what you’ll be measured on when you take Exam AZ-400, review the skills outline guide.

Sign up for training that fits your learning style and experience:

Complement your training with additional resources, like Microsoft Docs or the Azure Architecture Center.

Then, rehearse with the Microsoft Official Practice Test for AZ-400: Designing and Implementing Microsoft DevOps Solutions. All the objectives of the exam are covered in depth, so you’ll find what you need to be ready for any question.

After you pass your exam and earn your certification, there are many additional opportunities to grow your cloud expertise.

Note: Remember that Microsoft certifications assess how well you apply what you know to solve real business challenges. Our training resources are useful for reinforcing your knowledge, but you’ll always need experience in the role and with the platform.

It’s time to level up!

You’re a leader at making DevOps an effective practice for your organization. Earn your certification to help advance your career, gain recognition as an expert, and validate your technical knowledge and abilities as you drive your career into the future.

Please can you confirm what the renewal process is for this certification?  My Azure Administrator certificate expires a few months before the DevOps cert - will I need to renew both, or can I just renew the DevOps cert while my Azure Administrator cert has expired?

Microsoft

Hi @dhep27,

Your DevOps Engineer Expert will remain active for two years starting from the date you earned, even if your Azure Administrator Associated has expired.

Once your DevOps Engineer Expert expires (after the two years) if you want to renew it, by then you should have an active Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Developer Associate.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I've heard some rumors that AZ-400 would have its days numbered because in the near future there would be a focus on GIT integration. Because of that people that I know are postponing the exam till get some evidence that the rumor is for real or not.

I did not see this exam in the next year list of retirements, so I personally believe that is just a rumor, but if we get any confirmation that is just a rumor from your side, would be a lot better than just my opinion :)

     Thanks!

Hi @Ultraseven,

We don't have plans to retire the DevOps Engineer Expert certification, nor the corresponding Exam AZ-400.

A few months ago we changed the name of the certification to reflect our vision for the job role and required skills, along with the direction we’ll take as we include additional skills in the future. DevOps Engineers combine people, processes, and technologies to continuously deliver products and services. They use built-in Azure services, such as Azure DevOps, and they can integrate with Azure using lightweight tools and features from GitHub or open-source DevOps tools.

As part of our exam and certification maintenance, we may include new skills and new technologies as they are needed by the role, and you might see changes to the exam to include additional objective domains aligned with that--we always announce these changes in the exam pages.

So if you are interested in this certification, there is no reason to postpone it.

Hope this helps!
