We’re excited to announce the latest updates to the Business Applications training and certifications portfolio. Today, we’re adding three new role-based certifications:

And, on December 31, 2020, we’ll be retiring two exams:

  • MB-200 Microsoft Power Platform + Dynamics 365 Core
  • MB-400 Power Platform + Dynamics 365 Developer

Learners will be able to take both exams until December 31, 2020, and these will satisfy prerequisite and certification requirements until the end of 2021.

*NEW* Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Business Central Functional Consultant Associate

This all-new, standalone certification has no prerequisites. The associated exam, MB-800, will be available in beta in October 2020.

Is this certification right for you? If you’re responsible for implementing and configuring Business Central core application setup processes for small and medium-sized businesses and for migrating data to Business Central, explore this certification. In earning this certification, you will build and validate skills in setting up Business Central, configuring role centers (including adapting insights, cues, action tiles, reports, and charts), configuring Financials, configuring Sales and Purchasing, setting up operations, and using Microsoft Power Platform components.

*NEW* Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate

Like the certification prerequisite it’s replacing (MB-200: Microsoft Power Platform + Dynamics 365 Core), this new standalone certification is a prerequisite for earning certifications in Dynamics 365 Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, and Field Service. The exam associated with this new certification is PL-200.

What happens to exam MB-200? It will expire on December 31, 2020 but will still qualify as a prerequisite until December 31, 2021. After December 31, 2020, only PL-200 will be available. To compare the two exams, check out the new PL-200 skills outline document on the exam page. When you pass the new PL-200 exam, you’ll have earned your Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate certification and it will be valid for two years.

Is this certification right for you? To pursue this certification, you must have broad applied knowledge of Microsoft Power Platform, including a practical understanding of its capabilities, boundaries, and constraints. You should also have experience using Microsoft Power Platform maker tools to create solutions that use Microsoft Power Platform and Microsoft 365, in addition to proficiency in data modeling, user experience design, requirements analysis, and process analysis.

*NEW* Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Developer Associate

This certification is a standalone certification and will not require any prerequisites. The exam associated with this new certification is PL-400: Microsoft Power Platform Developer

What happens to exam MB-400? This exam will expire on December 31, 2020. After December 31, 2020, only PL-400 will be available. To compare the two exams, check out the PL-400 skills outline document on the exam page. When you pass the new PL-400 exam, you’ll have earned your Power Platform Developer Associate certification and it will be valid for two years.

Is this certification right for you? Are you a developer responsible for developing, securing, and troubleshooting Microsoft Power Platform solutions? Do you implement components of the solution, such as application enhancements, custom user experience, system integrations, data conversions, custom process automation, and custom visualizations? If so, this certification can help you build your skills and validate them. If you’re thinking about earning this certification, you must have strong applied knowledge of Microsoft Power Platform, including an in-depth understanding of its capabilities, boundaries, and constraints. You should also have a basic understanding of DevOps practices for Microsoft Power Platform, and your development experience should include Microsoft Power Platform, JavaScript, JSON, TypeScript, C#, HTML, .NET, Azure, Microsoft 365, RESTful web services, ASP.NET, and Power BI.

It would be nice to see some stability in the exams.. Changing a few skill bullet points and releasing an entire new exam and retiring the previous exam that isn't even a year old is quite frustrating. I understand the business apps area has been rapidly evolving, but this is too much in my opinion..

It would be more reasonable to incentivize those who have gone through the effort to sit and pass the previous exams to take the new ones.. Like for example give them a free beta code to the new one, rather than making us pony up the $$$ again for virtually the same exam. Otherwise it just looks like a money grab and dilutes the accomplishment of certification.

I've sat 4 business apps exams already this year and was going to do the rest eventually, but now I feel discouraged to do so because based on what I've seen there are plans to change more of the D365 exams. This is going to further discourage those new to the exams to take them..

I agree with Chris in regards to the stability in the exams.
Do you know if there is any homepage, blog post or any other source with up-to-date information on all exams which are valid for some time?

I also agree with Chris. We need some stability otherwise the certifications will lose their credibility.

Agree with Chris.  I think I understand from a business prospective...  The drive to get everyone to be cloud based.  On-premise gone so no more on-premise based exams.  A few major stake holders maintaining everything.  It renders previous certs obsolete in one fell swoop.  Previous engineer/admin on-prem roles are gone by force. Thin/zero clients are in at the desktop level.  Time for MCSE old-schoolers like me to rethink the upcoming years.....
