IME Not Installing after Edition Upgrade Home to Education using Company Portal.

Copper Contributor

Hi,

Currently using Company Portal on BYOD student devices to enroll in Intune.

After enrolling the BYOD device into Company Portal and the device is a Home Edition the device is upgraded to Education and prompts for a reboot to apply the settings.

A reboot is done.

After the reboot the IME does not install at all on the BYOD device, now it is Education Edition.

On another note if the device is Pro/Pro Education/Education/Enterprise and enrolled via Company Portal the device gets all settings and also the IME is installed automatically, after waiting 15 + minutes.

Any ideas to get the Intune Management Extension to install after an Edition upgrade on a Windows 10 and 11 device?

Thanks.

IME will install automatically when PS or Win32 apps are assigned.

Thank you

I have tried that too and it doesn’t work

See if something is blocking like FW, proxy, AV.
Hi again
Checked all of the above and nothing is blocking.
Devices don’t have antivirus.
Devices are on an open network.
Devices are not proxies.

It’s weird I have a case open with MS.
I would almost think, that you need to check the device management event logs to determine whats happening

It sounds like an issue with the mdm only enrollment and that upgrading ruined the enrollment a bit
As mentioned here, is there anything in the log files that could give you some more insights? as i have seen the IME also getting uninstalled because of the mdm enrollment nog being anchored to the entra registration

I have tried multiple reboots and syncing but no luck.
The agent isn't even installing so there are no logs to look at in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Intune etc..
If I at this stage manually install the IME things start to work.

The problem only exists when the device needs to upgrade editions.
Works fine with Company Portal and School or work device if not a Windows Home Edition.
Also works fine using School or work device and upgrading from Windows Home to Education after a reboot from applying the Education edition license, after the reboot works fine.

Are there any other ways an end user could force an IME install without having to send the user files etc??

After upgrading from Windows Home to Windows Education using Company Portal, the Input Method Editor (IME) may fail to install due to compatibility or configuration issues. Ensuring that all system updates and prerequisites are met can help resolve this problem. Additionally, verifying that the IME installation package is compatible with the new edition and checking for any necessary permissions or administrative settings can aid in a successful installation.
