can't restore from ios backup after enrolling onto intunes

Copper Contributor

Hi,

i have had to restore an ios device and enroll back onto intunes. this is done via apple configurator to apple business manager and subsequently onto intunes via enrollment tokens. the problem is i want to restore the device from a previous backup which then resets the device all over. and the intune data from that backup is not valid as the device was deleted on intunes during that period. it seems easy but this is proving difficult. i have followed these steps however these options are working for me Back up and restore iOS/iPadOS - Microsoft Intune | Microsoft Learn

i tried downloading company portal and logging in - it finds my details and devices however when it goes to sync with intunes to confirm device settings - it just hangs. there is 'some' communication as i can see the device in the device overview screen. but it says 'not evaluated' any help appreciated. thank you in advance

Just to be sure the device was already registered in Intune when the backup was performed? If this is the case you are unable to restore the device with this backup because the (former) MDM profile is part of the backup and after the new registration there is new MDM profile on the device. There can only be one MDM profile per device so it fails.

By the way if there is no MDM profile in the backup you should perform the restore during the Setup Wizard so you should enable this step in the Wizard in the DEP Enrollment profile. In this scenario you are able to restore and register correctly..

@SebastiaanSmits many thanks for your response. Yes there was an MDM profile at the time of backup however as the token had expired I had to start the whole enrollment program again for all devices as I hadn’t realised it was expired until it was too late. So I deleted the device from intune to re enrol. But it seams I can’t restore the iPhone from that backup as it won’t connect back to intune with the new profile ??

am I correct in saying I just have to start from scratch without my previous device restored  ?  I can’t even login to company portal as it won’t find intune account. Strangely the device does pop up in the devices overview but does not communicate.
