Microsoft Defender will not let me log in on Windows 11

Copper Contributor

I have a subscription to the Personal Microsoft 365 plan which includes Microsoft Defender. When I try logging into Microsoft Defender on my Windows PC, I receive an error message stating "Couldn't sign in to Microsoft Defender. Something went wrong-please try again later". I have been having this issue for several months now. I have recently contacted Microsoft Tech support who just directed me to this community. The tech support representative mentioned that others may have experienced similar issues as mine. I would appreciate if anyone could advise.

My PC is running Windows 11 and is up to date on updates. All of my 365 applications are also up to date. I have also tried running the repair tool on Microsoft Defender in addition to uninstalling and reinstalling the application.

The tech support representative mentioned something to me about the issue could be because I am using a personal email account for my login for Microsoft Defender. I did not fully understand why that would be the issue. I would like to note that I have no issue logging into Microsoft Defender on my Android phone. The problem appears to only occur on my PC and only for the Microsoft Defender app. All other apps that come with my 365 subscription use the same login and appear to be working fine.

Hello @akiva31

Thanks for reaching out. I am sorry you are having issues and the support wasn't able to help you out.

This forum is for the "Enterprise Defender", and I need to admit, that I don't know much about the consumer version - but let's see if we can help you 🙂

When you say you can't access "Microsoft Defender", are you referring to the App or are you trying to access a specific site?

Best,

Heike

@HeikeRitter Yes, I am referring to the application for Windows. I had the feeling that the tech support representative I spoke with seemed to believe that I have the business version of Microsoft Defender, though I definitely have the consumer version, the version that comes with the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription. If you could help, then that would be fantastic.

@HeikeRitter, I just wanted to follow up to see if you have made any progress or if you have any suggestions.

Try terminate and restarting Microsoft Defender app in Windows 11
Repair and Reset the Microsoft Defender app
Verify the Internet connection - Check if you have any proxy settings which may block Microsoft Defender from accessing its URLs.
Try it by disabling third party VPN if you have any
Gosh, I did not receive a notification for your message (or I missed it). I am very sorry.
Did you see SJ27s reply and did you try the suggested steps?
Not a problem. I did see SJ27s suggestions. I have already tried restarting, repairing, resetting, and completely uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Defender. Non of those worked. I also do not have any third party VPN apps.

The only thing I am unsure how to do is determine if I have any proxy settings set for my internet that may block Microsoft Defender from accessing its URLs. However, I would imagine if this was the case I would have issues with other applications, though I could be wrong, I am willing to test this if you or SJ27 could provide me guidance as to what settings to check.

@akiva31 Hmm... not sure you have a proxy configured, but let's see. If you search in the search bar for "proxy" you can easily get to the proxy configuration:

How does this screen look like for your device?

@HeikeRitter It does not appear that I have a proxy setup
