Nested File Scanning

Hello,

Does Microsoft Defender scan 'nested' files by default e.g. a Word document embedded in another Word document, or does this need to be configured.  I notice you need to configure 'the maximum depth to scan archive files' however I am not sure if this setting also applies to non-archived nested files (otherwise known as deep file scanning).

I've not received any replies to my query regarding Defender nested file scanning below, which I find very strange as this is a basic question that Microsoft aught to be able to answer in a flash.  

Any Microsoft moderators - please will you provide an update to my question below.
