We recently migrated from on-premise Exchange 2016 to M365. Migrations went fine and this has been completed.
Next stage is to recover the hardware the old Exchange is currently installed on but I understand that I am unable to completely remove Exchange to remain in a supported state. My plan is to install Exchange, same version, onto a VM so it can sit there out of our way while we repurpose the hardware.
My question, what are the recommended steps? I have not installed Exchange for many years, last employer used a low cost mail server which barley did the job until I migrated them to M365, so last install was 15 + years ago! What are the steps and is there any particular settings that need to be applied to both replicate the service and connect to M365? I will use the existing license.
