I have a follow-up question on the following statement:

Note

If you have Windows devices running Windows 7 Pro, Windows 8 Pro, or Windows 8.1 Pro, your Microsoft 365 Business subscription entitles you to a Windows Pro 10 upgrade.

Refer: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/business/upgrade-to-windows-pro-creators-update?redirectSourcePath=%252fen-us%252farticle%252fupgrade-windows-devices-to-windows-pro-creators-update-ffc4d886-9e1d-453d-a0d0-2f62f18635e2&view=o365-worldwide

What exactly does this "entitles you to a Windows Pro 10 upgrade" mean?

For e.g. Let's say I have a Windows 7 SP1 Pro machine which is licensed.

Now I used the Windows Update Assistant / Media Creation Tool and upgraded the machine to Windows 10 Pro. At this point, will my Windows 10 Pro machine be activated and licensed?

One of the pre-reqs for Windows 10 Subscription Activation (Pro to Ent switch) is that the source OS should be Windows 10 Pro (version 1703 and higher) and it should be licensed.

Any inputs from you on anyone else clarifying the above will be really helpful.

As long as you upgrade using this link for all PCs you will be able to activate your Microsoft 365 Business Premium. https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Use your system management tool to upgrade Win7 to Win 10 and then assign and then assign the M365 E3/E5 license to the user but make sure you selecting Windows 10 Enterprise license in M365 E3/E5. Refer to Windows 10 Subscription Activation.

@Lewis-H @Dan_Barn Thanks guys!

I get what you are saying, but let me break this down:

When I use https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 to upgrade W7 SP1 Pro to W10 Pro, will the W10 Pro be licensed and activated? If yes, how? I am not supplying a product key for W10 Pro anywhere.

I am aware of the firmware embedded product key situation. Is this playing a role here? Which means if the W7 SP1 Pro machine has a OEM Pro key embedded in its firmware. Is that pulled automatically during the upgrade to W10 Pro thereby handling the license situation at this stage?

The E3/E5 license comes later. That helps in switching W10 from Pro to Ent when the user (who has the license assigned) signs in with AAD credentials.

For this to work, the W10 Pro should be licensed and activated.

@mosubram Since it is an "Upgrade" it will carry any Key over to Win 10.  Anything from Win 7 - Win 8.1. If you want the win 10 Enterprise through the O365 subscription. The User with the Microsoft 365 E3 License will need to sign in to the computer. This is the same with Microsoft 365 Business. The screen shot below is from my computer that is signed in as a Microsoft 365 user. Here is a link you may like also: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/deploy-enterprise-licenses

@Marvin Oco Not sure but I think if you watch the video on Admin center and choose "Teaching for administrator" might be usefull. This link https://support.office.com/en-us/article/upgrade-windows-10-home-to-windows-10-pro-0aee10c1-4d34-43e... may also help. If you have not yet got it done :)
