Office 365 Groups Naming Policy - apply to e-mail address only

We are currently experimenting with the Office 365 Groups Naming Policies. Unfortunately we would only like to apply the policy to the e-mail addresses of the newly generated groups and not the groups'/teams' display names - because it looks odd.

Is this possible? If not, is this a planned feature for the future?

Not possible, afaik. As the name suggests, Naming policies will not help you here. Instead, you should be able to use Email Address policies, which are indeed available in ExO when it comes to Office 365 Groups. However, you cannot use variables unfortunately, effectively meaning that you can only manage the domain part of the email address. So this will not work in your scenario.
