In this video, I had the chance to speak with Dhananjay Mahajan @dhanMMS  (Principal Program Manager at Microsoft) about how you can run Azure Arc enabled data services on Azure Stack HCI with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). This provides you with a full-stack solution to run Azure data services such as Azure SQL managed instances in your own on-premises datacenter or edge location.

Azure Arc makes it possible to run Azure data services on-premises, at the edge, and in public clouds using Kubernetes and the infrastructure of your choice. Currently, the following Azure Arc-enabled data services are available:

  • SQL Managed Instance
  • PostgreSQL Hyperscale (preview)

You can learn more about Azure Arc-enabled data services on Microsoft Docs.

Azure Arc-enabled SQL Managed Instance has near 100% compatibility with the latest SQL Server database engine, and enables existing SQL Server customers to lift and shift their applications to Azure Arc data services with minimal application and database changes while maintaining data sovereignty. At the same time, SQL Managed Instance includes built-in management capabilities that drastically reduce management overhead.

What is Azure Kubernetes Service on Azure Stack HCI?

Azure Kubernetes Service on Azure Stack HCI is an on-premises implementation of Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS), which automates running containerized applications at scale. Azure Kubernetes Service is available on Azure Stack HCI and Windows Server 2019 Datacenter, making it quicker to get started hosting Linux and Windows containers in your datacenter.

What is Azure Stack HCI?

Azure Stack HCI is a hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) cluster solution that hosts virtualized Windows and Linux workloads and their storage in a hybrid environment that combines on-premises infrastructure with Azure cloud services.

Azure Stack HCI is delivered as an Azure service and billed to an Azure subscription. Azure hybrid services enhance the cluster with capabilities such as cloud-based monitoring, Site Recovery, and VM backups, as well as a central view of all of your Azure Stack HCI deployments in the Azure portal. You can manage the cluster with your existing tools, including Windows Admin Center and PowerShell.

Azure Stack HCI is a world-class, integrated virtualization stack built on proven technologies that have already been deployed at scale, including Hyper-V, Storage Spaces Direct, and Azure-inspired SDN. It's part of the Azure Stack family, using the same software-defined compute, storage, and networking software as Azure Stack Hub.
