No longer supported: Microsoft Intune Silverlight-based admin console
Published Oct 16 2019 10:00 AM 28.4K Views

The Silverlight-based classic Intune portal is no longer available and all remaining PC software clients are being uninstalled automatically.

As communicated in: MC222228, this is your final service announcement on this change. As we’ve shared in MC193258, MC206392, and MC213747 – Intune announced retirement of legacy PC management and the Silverlight-based Intune console effective October 15, 2020. Once you’re off legacy PC management, you can get all the benefits of modern, secure management with Intune including additional Windows 10 management, Win32 app management using the Intune Management Extension, security baselines, and App Protection Policies.

Please do keep in mind there's been 4 M365 Message Center posts and 2 emails about this end of service. Move these PCs to MDM management, or if they are on Windows 7, upgrade them to Windows 10.

Here's the original post from last October -

Today, we're posting a message in the message center to all customers who have PC's managed using the PC software client or the Storage Add-On licensing offer. Read the full message below. We'll continue to update this post as needed.

Microsoft Intune will retire support for the Silverlight-based Intune console on October 15, 2020. This retirement includes ending support for the Silverlight console configured PC software client (also known as the PC agent) used for Windows PC management. In addition, Intune will end the Intune Storage Add-On licensing offer which was only used for app storage in Silverlight. Move your day-to-day Intune administration from Silverlight to the Microsoft Endpoint Manager admin center: https://endpoint.microsoft.com.

How does this affect me?

Our telemetry indicates you have PC software client managed Windows devices that will need to be MDM enrolled in order to stay managed by Intune past the above-reference date.

What do I need to do?

As you move forward with PC refresh or updates, enroll new Windows 10 devices into the MDM channel instead of using the PC software client. For existing PC software client devices, you’ll want to remove the PC software client and enroll the device in the MDM channel instead. Basic steps are:

  1. Get familiar with device administration at https://endpoint.microsoft.com
  2. Recreate your existing Windows 10 policies as MDM policies. Note that many device management policies were migrated several years ago as part of the admin console migration, so double check device management in Azure before you create any policies.
  3. Review reporting in Silverlight to find those PC’s that are managed by the PC software client.
  4. Decide the right modern enrollment mechanism for your organization. You can review your options here: Intune enrollment methods for Windows devices.
  5. Unenroll devices with the PC software client and re-enroll the device using MDM. We strongly recommend you update to the latest version of Windows 10. As previously announced, Intune no longer supports Windows 7 as of January 14, 2020.
  6. If you do use the Intune Storage Add-On licensing, note that it is not needed when you use the MDM channel for managing your PC’s with Intune. Ensure apps are loaded using any of the mechanisms described here: Add apps to Microsoft Intune.

Please note: If you do use the Intune Storage Add-On licensing, it is not needed when you use the MDM channel for managing your PC’s with Intune. Ensure apps are loaded using any of the mechanisms described here.

This change will allow you to take advantage of the enhanced capabilities available through the MDM channel for Windows management. We encourage you to migrate as soon as possible, and no later than October 15, 2020. After that date, the Silverlight-based Intune console will no longer be accessible. PCs managed with the PC software client will stop receiving security updates and apps, and will no longer be able to be configured.

If the old agent software is still installed on PCs after October 2020, will it be automatically removed? Or will we need to do this manually?

Step 3 is "Review reporting in Silverlight to find those PC’s that are managed by the PC software client." Can you provide the exact steps necessary to do this? I was notified that I have PC-software-client-managed Windows devices, but it has been a long time since I worked in the Silverlight console. It may be that all the devices I enrolled have since been retired. When I click on the link provided for the Silverlight console (https://manage.microsoft.com/), I see a bunch of warnings about the move from the legacy client to the MDM solution, and I'm not sure how to proceed after that. I am hesitant to click through all the warning messages because I don't want to inadvertently revert to actually using the legacy client for any new enrollments.

@remco8264, we’ll check with the PM and get back back to you on this.

@David Schrag, If you’d like to avoid opening the Silverlight portal, you can find the devices in the Azure portal by using the following:

1. Go to Intune -> Devices
2. Click Azure AD devices under Manage (they won’t appear under All devices)
3. Look/search for devices with an OS value of Desktop instead of Windows

Hope this helps!

Iron Contributor

Yes, that helped to find the devices. Now how do I remove the legacy client so that I can enroll the machine with MDM? If I drill down into a machine and click Manage, I'm taken to the All Devices view, which as you point out does not show the device I'm working with. I found an article on removing the client (https://www.petervanderwoude.nl/post/uninstall-the-microsoft-intune-client/) but it looks like I'd have to use the Silverlight console for that. I have no objection to going back to the Silverlight portal, as long as there's no risk of somehow triggering an installation of the legacy client where it's not wanted.

@Intune_Support_Team Thanks! Another thing I noticed is that the notification in the Silverlight Portal is displayed in strange characters and not translated into Dutch.

@David Schrag, Steps on retiring a device via the Classic (Silverlight) Portal can be found in our docs here: Classic Portal - Retire a Windows PC. If there's anything else we can help expand on, please let us know!

@remco8264, Thanks for the report! We've reported this to engineering - It's another reason to move off of the Silverlight portal .

I activated the Silverlight portal and found the devices with the legacy client. When I select a device and click Retire/Wipe, the next dialog box advises that "Selective wipe is not supported for Windows devices that are joined to Azure Active Directory." My devices are joined to AAD, so how should I proceed?

Hi @David Schrag, currently looking into this, we'll reply back as soon as we have more insight!

Iron Contributor

Hi, @Intune_Support_Team . Any update on retiring AAD-joined devices?

Copper Contributor

Can someone help me on how we can proceed to unenroll windows 10 1703 devices from legacy Intune and then auto enroll to MDM

@David Schrag, thank you for your patience, we've still checking with the team on this, and will get back with you once we have some additional info to share.

@Neeraj_Kumar, auto-enrollment can be configured by using the following steps here: Set up enrollment for Windows devices.
If there's anything further we can help clarify, please let us know!

@Intune_Support_Team

I have 100+ W10 1803 or higher on legacy intune portal/client..  Have Azure AD P1.  Want to move all clients over to new Intune portal/client.

What is the best way to do so, and is it possible without user interaction?

Thanks

Hi @MrB12, for existing devices with the PC software client installed, you'll want to unenroll and re-enroll the device using MDM. Have a look at our Intune Administrator-based enrollment for Windows devices doc on different admin methods to enroll devices within Intune.

If anyone isn't complete with their migration yet, I encourage you to hurry.  Despite the commitment by Microsoft in this article to keep the Silverlight-based console available until 15-October-2020, it currently returns an error when I logon.  Is anyone else experiencing trouble with it?  It's possible it's just a client side issue.

I raised a ticket, and Intune Support's current response is that the Silverlight-based console is now closed - 2 months early - and that the only "support" available is to tell you to migrate.  Intune Support is continuing to discuss the matter and I am hopeful it will be resolved in a satisfactory manner.

@chsor2090, Thank you for the feedback! Unless you've received a Message Center post suggesting an earlier date, you should be good access the Silverlight console until October 15th, 2020. We've also followed up with you over message to learn more about your recent support case.

Hello,Intune Support team

I have two questions regarding Win10 build1803 behavior after Intune ending support on 15th Oct.

1.As mentioned in this topics at 10-21-2019,If the old agent software is still installed on PCs after October 2020, will it be automatically removed? Or will we need to do this manually?

2.Is windows update available via internet if I uninstall agent software after 15th Oct ?

in other word, isn't  the windows update via internet available unless uninstall the agent software?

Thanks

Hi @taka-jp, thank you for your questions!

1. PC software clients will be automatically removed after October 15.

2. After PC software clients are removed, PCs will fall back to Windows Update, just like other unmanaged devices.

For details on the state the PCs will be in after retirement (either admin/user-driven or automatic), see: Retire a Windows PC to learn more.

ok i can't access the silverlight portal either now so what do i do?.

Copper Contributor

So I was in the middle of a migration project, retiring systems out of the Silverlight console and having my technicians reach out and assist with registering into the new Azure Intune console. Everything was working fine until yesterday. I no longer have access to the Silverlight console to continue the retiring of systems. Microsoft, why have you shut down the website if you mentioned that end of support was on October 15, 2020.

Hi @kany1233350 and @MTorres626, thank you both for the report! We've reached out to the team to investigate the access issue and will update this thread as soon as we have more information to share. Our support folks can also help remove any remaining PC agents, please raise a new support request via the MEM admin console, or any of the methods documented here.

Hi @kany1233350 and@MTorres626, if you're still experiencing an error when attempting to access the Intune Silverlight console, please try: https://admin.manage.microsoft.com. If you're continuing to experience the same, please let us know and thanks for the report!

Hi Techies,

Can someone answer my questions-

We had retired may devices before 15th Oct, the devices which came online migrated to modern Intune. but some devices are still offline ie after 15.

How to make sure the device will be migrated when they comes online. Any way/workaround or script to automate this?

Thanks in advance !!

Hi @Neeraj_Kumar, thanks for the question! We've followed up with you over a private message to learn more about the scenario and to provide additional assistance. Thanks!

Copper Contributor

Interestingly the Silverlight portal is still working here.

Hi @remco8264, thanks for letting us know. We've followed up with you over a private message. Thanks!

@Intune_Support_Team supports the intune management extention BranchCache functionality?

MS Docs says: Use BranchCache on computers (requires Intune software client) it is not so clear explained.

Hi @wollewoldemar, we passed along your feedback to the team to clarify our docs regarding the Intune software client. For the scenario on leveraging BranchCache with Intune, we're looking into this and will get back to you on this. Thanks for the feedback!
