Check Your Home's Router for Uninvited Guests

Nowadays we might have to spend more times on home and we might as administrator for our homes. Using wireless at home is very common and convenience but we should consider its security too. As many people staying at home, they might attempt to gain access to your home’s Wi-Fi and they will actually do. Normally we know about all best practices to protect home Wi-Fi but I am sharing as reminder:

  • Use strong password mix of alphabet, number, symbols and use strongest encryption algorithm
  • It is good idea to change your Wi-Fi password regularly
  • Place your router in place to have weak signals in outside, so only you could use it at homes
  • Use MAC filtering and only add your devices in MAC trusted list
  • Enable any other security features which might be enable in your Wi-Fi router

However, for some reason other could access our Wi-Fi network using hacking techniques. Therefore other than protection techniques which we have discussed , there is a need for continues monitoring of your Wi-Fi router and to do that, you will need to login to your router admin dashboard and check what devices are connecting and take a note of their MAC address and then check it with devices at home like your phones, laptop , PC and even smart devices like TV and so on.

If you are seeing any MAC address which is not in your home, look around one more time and see if you missed any smart devices or not and you may search the MAC address to see what device is it. Then you could add it to blacklist or try to change your Wi-Fi password and kink out intruder. Maybe it is device you forgot about it and when you see it is not working, you remove its MAC address from blacklist.

Stay safe and healthy and secure and keep cybercriminals out of your homes.
