our exchange 2010 server certificate has expired with no option to renew. we have migrated to exchange 2016, can we install a new certificate instead of renewing

Yes, you can just replace the certificate with a brand new one instead of renewing. Customers sometimes do this when they switch certificate providers or when they have a change in their namespace requirements.
