Videos: Installing Exchange 2007 SP1 CCR on Windows Server 2008

Now that Exchange Server 2007 SP1 is available, I thought I'd demonstrate installing Cluster Continuous Replication on Windows Server 2008. As stated by Scott Schnoll in his blog post, Windows Server 2008 includes a number of improvements and enhancements that can directly benefit servers running Exchange 2007 SP1. Exchange 2007 SP1 also includes support for geographically dispersed clusters for failover across two subnets. This video demonstration is split into 2 parts. The first part discusses creating and configuring the cluster and the second part talks about Clustered Mailbox Server Installation and Configuration.

Note: Deployment of CCR on Windows 2008 can be done via the command line or GUI.  The commands can be added into a script and the deployment can be automated. While installing through the command line interface makes the whole process quite a bit shorter and simpler, I wanted to demo the wizard driven deployment for those that want to choose it. Please see the following post on the details on how to install from command line:

One thing I wanted to clarify about the second video, where Exchange 2007 SP1 prerequisites for installation are discussed:

Only the "Active Directory Domain Services Tools [RSAT-ADDS]" pre-req is needed to satisfy Exchange Server 2007 SP1 prerequisites for CCR/SCC installation:

'ServerManagerCmd –i ADLDS' installs the "Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services  [ADLDS]" role. Installing the ADAM service role will also install the "Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services Tools  [RSAT-ADLDS]" and the "Active Directory Domain Services Tools  [RSAT-ADDS]" which are both features. Running 'ServerManagerCmd –i RSAT-ADDS' installs the following tools:

Active Directory Domain Services Tools  [RSAT-ADDS]
Active Directory Domain Controller Tools  [RSAT-ADDC]
Server for NIS Tools  [RSAT-SNIS]

Cool Videos.  Will there be a video on how to use Windows backup in Windows 2008 to backup Exchange 2007?

Great Post.  And if anybody is interested, I am creating a similar blog entry, but for Single Copy Clusters using iSCSI to connect to a Starwind iSCSI target.  Check it out if you're interested.

The videos are a great addition - thanks for putting them up. As they say, 'a picture is worth a thousand words'.... so probably 'a video is worth a million words'? ;) Great stuff... kudos!

Can this be done with all Virtual Servers?  I'd like to set this up using Hyper-V at some point.  I've got a host up with 4 W2K8 VMs ready to go!

Thanks for the videos!

Dmackdaddy, it can.  It's quite easy with CCR because you can use Direct Attached Storage (DAS).  All you have to do is set up the clustering service using its' own disks.  When you want to use SCC, it's a bit more difficult as you have to set up shared disks.  Since Server 2008 has a built in iSCSI initiator, you can do this easily using iSCSI target software such as Starwind.

Thx, Elan - I'll have to try setting up a CCR on all VMs on Hyper-V!  Your blog is quite good too!
