Standalone Device Emulator 1.0 with Windows Mobile OS Images now available!

From the download page:

The Microsoft Device Emulator 1.0 is a standalone version of the same ARM based Device Emulator that ships as part of Visual Studio 2005. The standalone emulator is intended for situations when you want to demonstrate or test your application on a computer that does not have Visual Studio 2005 installed. In addition, we are offering the Windows Mobile 5.0 MSFP operating system images that you can use with the Device Emulator.

Device Emulator 1.0 has a number of features that make it significantly better than its predecessor (the x86 emulator). You will find that it:

- Runs code compiled for ARM processors rather than for x86 processors. In most cases, you can run the same binaries on the emulator as you do on the device.

- Supports synchronizing with ActiveSync. You can use the Device Emulator with a full ActiveSync partnership. This feature allows you to debug applications that are syncing, or be able to use real synchronized data from within the Device Emulator.

- Provides support for more development environments. The emulator has been tested for developing and debugging applications with Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio .NET 2003, and with eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0 (eVC4) SP4, all using ActiveSync. No crossover serial cable is required.

- The Device Emulator supports GAPI. You can write and debug GAPI games on the Device Emulator and expect them to work.

Note: This release contains the Standalone Device Emulator as well as the following Windows Mobile OS Images:

Windows Mobile 5.0 with Messaging and Security Feature Pack (MSFP)

Thank you.  I don't have Visual Studio, so this is a great help.

But how do you get connected to the internet?

I have the Virtual Machine Network Driver installed, and my network uses static connections.  When ever I try to connect to the internet it says this connection cannot be used. :(

Hello - Can someone pass along to the team responsible for this a BIG thank you as well as one request.  Can a future emulator version (maybe 1.01) allow Windows screen prints to be taken?  Makes documenting PDA configurations a whole lot easier.  :)

TIA,
Rob

Hi...

How do you emulate a GPRS connection? If this is an image with MSFP and you can not emulate the GPRS connection then how do you show your customer Push mail in action?

yours truly got inspired to cook up a series about integrating device emulator 1.0 into a demo environment, with the express goal of showing push mail & remote wipe to customers & prospects.

i still don't see a way to emulate a GPRS connection, but you can use the emulated ethernet to show exchange connectivity, including push mail, in action.

for those who are interested, the series starts here: http://happyfunboy.blogspot.com/2006/05/wm5-device-emulator-preparation.html

fyi: the juicier stuff will be posted later this week.

Questions regarding the emulator and testing push mail... You need to have a live cell data connection to do push mail, since the emulator can't pull one off you cannot test push-mail using it.

I know this isn't the news you were hoping for but hopefully it helps you stop banging your head against the wall.

how do you get a live cell data connection to your emulator? So without that, to test push email is impossible?

All the demos from Microsoft that I've seen have used an emulator to demonstrate Direct Push. Don't know how they do it!

Has anyone been able to make this work under a virtual session under Virtual Server?  I have installed it on a vm session but the network card under the emulator properties won't stay checked.  It worked for emulators before MSFP.

Has anyone been able to get the direct push feature to work
with the emulator?

Greg: Seem to be having same problem as you.  Network card wont stay enabled. Have not yet tried on a physical machine yet. Bummer it bombs in the VM.
