Exchange 2007/2010 Rollup 3 Status Update
Published Mar 30 2011 01:33 PM 4,003 Views

I want to thank you for your continued patience while we work to correct the problems encountered with our latest Update Rollups for Exchange 2007 Service Pack 3 and Exchange 2010 Service Pack 1 (E2007 SP3 RU3 and E2010 SP1 RU3). The Exchange Product Group takes software quality seriously. We owe you, our customers, much, much better.

Let me provide an update on each.

Exchange 2007 SP3 RU3 Status

The Exchange Servicing team expects to re-release the Exchange 2007 SP3 RU3 rollup in the next day or so. We are going through the final sign-off processes. As reported yesterday, a bug was introduced which had the potential to create database corruption. We consider any situation which could lead to data loss a significant risk, which is why we posted the unusual guidance to rollback to the previously installed version versus waiting for an update.

Still, we have been able to identify the issue, remove the fix which introduced the problem, complete our testing, and expect to re-release the Update Rollup shortly. We also understand what happened to allow this situation to occur and are taking corrective measures. Finally, for customers who have not uninstalled E2007 SP3 RU3, this will install seamlessly on top of the existing E2007 SP3 RU3 installations.

Update 4/6/2011: The updated Exchange 2010 SP1 RU3 has been re-released. See Announcing the Re-release of Exchange 2010 Service Pack 1 Update Rollup 3 (V3).
3/31/2011: The updated Exchange 2007 SP3 RU3 has been released. See Announcing the Re-release of Exchange 2007 Service Pack 3 Update Rollup 3 (V2).

Exchange 2010 SP1 RU3 Status

For E2010 SP1 RU3 we are still one to two weeks away from re-release. While the previous post specifically mentioned only one issue related to duplicate messages in the Sent Items folder on Blackberry devices, we unfortunately uncovered one additional issue after my original post. There is no risk of to customer data as a result of this second problem.  However, the underlying problem is complex and we are taking the necessary time to get a high quality solution.

Specific to this second issue we uncovered a problem which manifested as an email delivery delay for users of Microsoft Outlook 2007 or 2010.  Our investigation of the problem exposed a rare situation in Exchange 2010 where notifications were not sent to these clients.  What changed in E2010 SP1 RU3 is that this situation is more likely to occur because of code added to support coexistence in cross-premises environments, i.e., users within an enterprise both on-premises and in the cloud.

While I know many of you are waiting to deploy E2010 SP1 RU3, and we could have removed the code to more quickly turn around the re-release, in our analysis we felt this issue was significant enough that it needed to be addressed immediately.  Additionally our testing uncovered the need to refine the notification experience with Microsoft Outlook 2003 clients.  So we have taken the additional time to ensure resolution of the issues uncovered with notifications.  The delay in re-releasing E2010 SP1 RU3 is a result of ensuring these issues are resolved satisfactorily

For those of you that currently have E2010 SP1 RU3 installed, you can either uninstall E2010 SP1 RU3 (which is recommended if you are experiencing any of the above issues), or wait for the re-release. The re-release build will install seamlessly on top of the existing E2010 SP1 RU3 installation.

Thank you for this update Kevin, it is really appreciated.  It's so very helpful to have information and rough timelines to pass on to our users (and particularly senior management).

Kevin,

We were one of the customers affected by RU3 and the email receiving delay in Outlook 2007 and 2010... Even after uninstalling the RU3 on all of our Exchange 2010 servers (now back at RU1), we are still seeing the delays.  FYI, webmail and mobile devices are fine... just Outlook clients. Any advice on what we can do? Microsoft was saying we should go to RU2 - would that fix the issue??

Thanks in advance.

Update is much appreciated.

Darren,

I recommend opening a support case (or continue working on an existing one) with the notification delays you are seeing.  There's nothing specific that I can think of that we did in RU2 that would address what you have described (but then again, I don't have all the facts about your issue).

Anyone brave enough to try this yet? We are one of the 'small number of customers' that has corruption in our SCR databases and need to reseed.

Jyrki,

We are working on a fix for the issue you mentioned. You can call Support and request an interim update or perform the following temporary workaround:

Get-OrganizationConfg | fl showInlineAttachments -> take note of the value and record it for future use.

Set-OrganizationConfig -ShowInlineAttachments $true

Think there is a date typo in the yellow box: Update 3/31/2010 --> Should be 3/31/2011??

Kevin, Thanks for the updates.

3 weeks ago, I deployed Exchange 2010 SP1 in our envrironment, in coexistence with Exchange 2003, and added RU3 2 weeks ago as the only rollup update for Exchange 2010.

We only have ten test users so far, all synching emails with Blackberry (Blackberry 5.0.2), and we haven't experienced the sent item problems. Looking forward to this patch just in case.

@JS: Thanks for catching that - fixed.

What is the expected date of the release for the rollout of Exchange 2010 SP1 RU3?  It was a little vague in your comments above.  Is one or two weeks?  This is really causing us a lot of issues and delays in our environment.  Are there any other work arounds or tweaks that you can suggest that we can put in place that can help alleviate these issues in the meantime, other then restarting the service.

Will version 2 of RU3 patch also address this problem?

KB2410571 in RU3 v1

A RBAC role assignee can unexpectedly change permissions of mailboxes that are outside the role assignment scope in an Exchange Server 2010 environment

Consider the following scenario:

You create a management role assignment in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environment.

You assign the Mail Recipients role to a role assignee.

You define the scope of the role assignment to an organizational unit.

In this scenario, the role assignee unexpectedly has the ability to change permissions of mailboxes that are outside the role assignment scope by using the Add-MailboxPermissioncommand or the Remove-MailboxPermission command.

Hi Kevin,

thank you for the status update.

I hope you'll fix further issues with the RU3 too.

Currently we have really big issues when users join distribution groups on their own. The owner receives the approval mail, but there is no name included of the mentioned distribution group in this approval mail. For owners of mutliple distribution groups thats really nasty.

I am having issues with some messages appearing blank in IMAP clients.  I see this mentioned in KB2487501 (which has been pulled) as being addressed in RU3.  I have contacted Microsoft for interim fix for this issue as it has stalled my deployment of Exchange 2010, however they're telling me an interim fix won't be released until RU3 is re-released.  But isn't that the point of an interim fix, to get you by until the roll-up is released.  Can anyone provide me any other ideas/avenues for getting this interim update or how I can address this issue?

Thanks

I wonder if the BES 5 sp3 release will cause a furtur delay of 2010 SP1 ru3, or it's the reason for the delay.  I wonder if BES 5 sp3 fixes the issues with RU3, anyone try yet?

I'm confused.  I thought MS had pulled the updates from the website. Yet I can see RU3 for Exchange 2010 still available to download:

www.microsoft.com/.../confirmation.aspx

Or is it the case that this is RU3 Release 2? i.e. the update is here already?

Not applicable

@ Nadim J: we have pulled RU3 for Exchange 2010 SP1, not for Exchange 2010 RTM (which is what you linked to). We will definitely let people know when E2010 SP1 RU3 is out again as a v2.

Aaah, didn't know that was possible (to install RU3 without SP1). Thanks

Any word on whether it's looking like the 2010 SP1 RU3 rerelease will be done this week? We have been managing the support calls from our users, but would be VERY helpful if we could start the change control process as soon as possible to ensure coordination with our public safety personnel.

Would I be correct in assuming that Rollup 4 will not be coming next month as originally planned?

Thanks for this details, we install RU3 to get rid of errors during PST import (known as c(support.microsoft.com/.../en-us), but if we uninstall RU3 are we able to download/install the Q2479875 ?

As it seem that the KB entry have also been removed ?

Thanks.

As an FYI to all, I install the latest Rollup 3 (v3) with no issues and it resolved my duplicate blackberry sent items issue.  My scenario was that I had Exchange 2010 SP1, installed the original Rollup 3 and users started seeing dup's in their sent items on their devices.  I did not make any reg changes while waiting for the updated Rollup 3.

Kevin I've been trying through regular channels for over a week. We have a horribly broken Exchange install that support had been unwillingunable to help with. The latest iteration being Escalation support made a change which broke exiting users and left for the weekend, RU3 doesn't fix the issues and even a recovery install has not resolved it. What do we do?
