Ask and you shall receive - Exchange 2007 SP3 w/support for Windows Server 2008 R2 Now Available
Published Jun 21 2010 05:01 PM 9,695 Views

I am very pleased to let you all know that Exchange Server 2007 SP3 is available for download. As we highlighted in Updates to the Exchange Supportability Matrix this past November, this third service pack for Exchange 2007 enables Exchange 2007 to be installed on the Windows Server 2008 R2 version of the operating system. We heard you loud and clear that this is enormously important to our Exchange 2007 customers, so we worked quickly to deliver SP3 in order to meet this requirement.

Download Exchange 2007 SP3 here.

Keep the feedback coming and for those of you evaluating all the good stuff packed into Exchange Server 2010, don't miss the beta of Exchange Server 2010 SP1. You can read about SP1 here.

I've got one Exchange 2007 and one Exchange 2010 server and the setup says I need to do a Setup /PrepareAD. That seems odd.

@Pradeep: The link is fixed now, there was a slight delay in the redirect. Please let us know if you cannot find it still.

@Susan: For this release there was not a public beta made available.

@Robert: We made some schema changes in SP3 which will require you to extend the schema even if you have the RTM version of Exchange 2010. The changes are documented here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607224(EXCHG.80).aspx

Hi guys,

Since the Exchange Support Matrix has been moved, the URL now points to a page that is empty:

This is great news! Just one question,  is it OK to run SP2 & SP3 servers side-by-side as we won't be able to upgrade all of our servers at the same time?

Thanks
Andrew

Now I'm getting:

Unified Messaging Server Role Prerequisites
Failed

Error:
You must be a member of the Exchange Organization Administrators group to upgrade the first Unified Messaging server role in your organization to Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 3.

I checked - I am a member.

Andrew - yes you can run a mix of SP2 and SP3 in the org.  However, keep in mind that CAS must be upgraded before Mailbox.  THe order of upgrade is:

1.  CAS
2.  HT
3.  MBX

And if you are running failover clusters, you don't want to run a mix of Exchange versions either (because at some point you have to upgrade the CMS and after that happens you cannot failover/switchover to a lower version).

Is there a direct upgrade path from Exchange 2007 SP2 running on Windows Server 2008 to Windows Server 2008 R2?  Or would this be a rip and replace type of upgrade?

Is it just me or does the supportability matrix indicate that Outlook 2010 is only supported with Exchange 2010 RTM and not any earlier version of Exchange? (conflicts with other things I've read)

Jason,
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff607226(EXCHG.80).aspx describes the changes.

The R2/Windows 7 support is the big one but there are a few minor changes around OWA, search indexing and disclaimers in some languages.

I have just installed the SP3 to have it fail on me, it said it couldn't find the exchangeserver.msi file - but I could see it right there in the folder!  Now Exchange does not work at all, if I try and run the setup again it gives me the error that "binary files are not installed, but the backup settings registry key is present.  Only build-to-build upgrade mode is available"  Can't find any info on this except for the same error when people tried to install SP1, any ideas?  My whole Exchange server is down!

Troy, I've seen this when going from SP1 the c:windowsinstaller folder was "cleaned up" by someone in order to recover disk space (which isn't something you should do.)  Could that be it?

In that situation, I ended up blowing away the Exchange folders and registry keys (my databases were stored elsewhere) and then doing a /recoverserver using the service pack that was previously installed.  Then did my upgrade as a second step.
This isn't really supported though (for me it was in a lab) so I think your official path is an OS reinstall and Exchange /recoverserver or contact Microsoft to see if there's a way to fix Windows installer repository.

Thanks Frank, unfortunately I don't even have a C:WindowsInstaller folder...  I downloaded the SP3 file and saved it to C:Data... which is a share I created to store all our data.  So then I had to navigate to that folder, ran the file (which is basically just an extractor), then ran the setup.exe which appeared after extraction was complete.  In the same folder I could see other files and folders, including the exchangeserver.msi that it reportedly couldn't find.

You would think two things would have happened - first upon running setup.exe, it would check for all files to be in place before beginning the upgrade, and secondly if it failed to find a specific file, to give me a dialog box that lets me find it for the upgrade to continue!  Instead it just fails after already stopping and disabling services, removing files and getting everything prepped and ready for the install.

I will have to do some more research on your suggestions, thanks.

You should probably use the technet Exchange forums for help since these comments aren't meant for that but I'll just add that it was probably looking for the *old* exchangeserver.msi from the existing installation, because it wants to uninstall it.  Check the setup log to see what's happening (c:exchangesetuplogs)     And C:windowsinstaller is a hidden system holder.

I have successfully install SP3 on HT and CAS server. But when I try to install it on the passive node of CCR Clustered Mailbox server. I always get the following Error:

Exchange Server component Mailbox Role failed.
Error: Error:
An error occurred. The error code was 3221685674. The message was Insufficient system resources exist to complete the request service.
Log Name: Application
Source: MSExchangeSetup
Event ID:1002

Can anybody tell me how to fix it? Thanks very much.
Btw, after I failed to install SP3 on Mailbox server, I also get this Error:
Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.

DETAIL - Access is denied.

The Exchange supportability matrix lists Chrome, Safari, and Firefox as supported in OWA Premium mode! On first glance however, neither the latest release of Firefox (3.6.4) nor Chrome (5.0.375) allow you to choose that mode.... Any ideas?
Not applicable
@Kevin: The matrix is being updated to correct the list of browsers supported for OWA Premium (and related Outlook 2010 support for Exchange Server versions - which currently shows only Exchange 2010). Cross-browser and cross-platform support for OWA Premium

is an Exchange 2010 feature. See

Outlook Web App Supported Browsers for details.

So we cant install Outlook 2010 with Exchange 2007???? that is what the support matrix said.  Can some one confirm?

Zabulon,

Outlook 2010 is supported against Exchange 2007 SP2 and SP3.  That was a mistake in the supportability matrix and will be corrected soon.

Hi all,

after upgrading Exchange 2007 to Servicepack 3 we had the problem, that the OWA was reporting that the client has an old version of the S/MIME Plugin installed. Indeed the version of OWA is 8.3.83.4 after upgrading and the S/MIME Plugin is 8.3.83.2.

Workaround is to add a DWORD entry ForceSMIMEClientUpgrade with value 0 under HKLMSystemCurrent Control SetServicesMSExchange OWASMIME.

Roland

Im still running SP1 with RU9, do I need to install SP2 first or can I just go straight to SP3
Not applicable
@Luco13: Service Packs are cumulative updates, so you don't need to install a service pack you've missed and can install SP3 directly on a server that has Exchange 2007 RTM, SP1 or SP2 installed.

In fact, starting with Exchange 2007 the update rollups also work similarly. You can install Exchange 2007 + latest service pack + latest roll-up, without having to look for individual hotfixes.

Hi, is there a document for the process of installing SP3 on a SP2 SCC cluster? Or do I need to follow the same process as the SP2 install:

1. run setup.com /m:upgrade on the passive node, reboot
2. move the clustered mailbox server to the server and then run setup.com /upgradecms
3. run setup.com /m:upgrade on the remainig node

Thanks
Andrew

Andrew - you follow the same steps as identified in http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb676559(EXCHG.80).aspx.

If we already have E2K7 SP2 running do we need to run all the AD prep commands  (i.e. setup /pl; setup /ps; setup /p; setup /pd) or just the schema update (i.e. setup /ps) to get SP3 working?  Also would E2K10 SP1 schema change be the same as E2K7 SP3 as it was for E2K10 SP0 and E2K7 SP2?

When transitioning from 2003 to 2010, we would run the Exchange 2007 SP2 Schema update first so that we could have the option of putting a 2007 server in later if necessary (eg for some app requirement).

Can we now just use 2007 SP3 for the same trick?

Questions for SMB:  About to do a migration from
SBS 2003 / W2003 Std to SBS 2008 on Windows Server
2008 R2 Standard Edition running Exchange 2007.

Current migration guides don't mention Exchange 2007 SP3.

What version of Exchange 2007 is on newly purchased and downloaded versions of Windows Small Business
Server 2008 (SBS 2008)?

SBS 2008 comes with Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard
Edition. (1 or more licenses depending on package)

Do you need to run the Exchange 2007 SP2 Schema
update first?

I'll report back what I find during migration.

Thanks
