Update 12/13/2011: Please note that starting with today, you do not need to call Microsoft Support to get the fix to resolve this issue. All that is required now is installation of December 13, 2011 IE security update, KB 2618444. The below blog post has been updated accordingly.

We are happy to report that a fix for the Exchange Management Console (EMC) issues when Internet Explorer 9 is installed is now available. To be specific, we have talked about this in a previous blog post:

Exchange 2007 or 2010 EMC might fail to close with "You must close all dialog boxes before you can c...

How does this fix need to be applied?

In order to install the fix, a released version of IE9 needs to be installed on the machine first. Then:

The KB article talking about all this has also been updated: KB 2624899 FIX: You cannot close the EMC window on a computer that has Internet Explorer 9 installed

Finally, I would like to thank the Internet Explorer team for working with us on this interoperability issue and producing this hotfix.

Very good but please make it possible to download the hotfix without calling PSS.

Call support. (I call 1-800-microsoft and press the buttons to get into support)  Immediately state in a firm manner "I need KB2624899".  I've never had to pay anything to get a hotfix.  Works every time.

Thanks for the updated information. I would love for this to be a public download, however. I hate calling product support.

Direct hotfix request link:

Wonder why it's not public; people want to incorporate this into their corporate builds or images.

@Michel: As stated in the post - although tested, hotfixes don't go through as extensive testing as our roll-up fixes. If customers contact CSS for a hotix, CSS can track customers with a particular hotfix and reach out in case any issues are reported with it.

Ideally updates should be applied via rollup updates and service packs, which bundle many updates and go through more extensive testing than individual hotfixes.

@Martijn, Goodthings2life, Michel: The post has been updated with a link to request the hotfix.

BIG relief! :)

I am still seeing the issue with IE9 and the application of 2586448 on three new servers.  Any other advice to remove this annoying issue save killing the task or logging off?

@ LarryH: Larry - please check the blog post again; you need to first install support.microsoft.com/.../2586448 and then you need to get the 2624899 fix from Microsoft. That'll make it all better.

Comment edited by Nino Bilic [MSFT] 10/18/2011: I understand people find it inconvenient to contact MS for this fix, but we cannot recommend or support fixes downloaded from somewhere else. Please trust us that there is a reason for this at this time.

@Bharat: I understand the process. Can you provide any insight on why it took so long to fix this (problem was already reported somewhere in April)?

OK, we will wait for a while, I don't mind killing the mmc through Task Manager. As I did last 6 (six) months, I mean half a year...

Is there a plan when this update will be declared available for public download? Another 6 months?

....

"Individual hotfix packages such as this one do not go through as extensive testing as our roll-up fixes..."

....

We have realized that roll-up fixes are also not tested well enough and we also wait for someone else to try it in their environment...

Totally agree with Michel, it shouldn't have take this much of time...6 month to fix this kind of issue. I have no idea what is going on with developer's and exchange team these days.....

First the RU's and now this....I hope SP2 is neat and clean!

How can any serious company take months to fix something as simple and widespread as this?? MS have done nothing good since XP, all they do is tinker at the edges with 1 forwards, 400 steps sideways and 1 step backwards. The sooner someone invents a decent alternative to MS the better.

Will it work if I just roll back to IE8 and start using Chrome instead?

Sorry for my bad reading the page.

But I have installed the newest Hotfix for IE9 IE9-Windows6.1-KB2586448-x64 and the Rollup 6 for Exchange 2010 Sp2. But I have the error message. After verifying the system I can't reproduce the error. But der is not fixed.

This really is crap that we have to call for this fix. It's unbelievable actually since it affects every client site I look after. Still haven't grabbed it as I cannot be arsed going through MS Support for this.

I didn't have to call anybody, just requested the download and got an email within minutes.
