Sum formula not totalling

when you highlight a column to make it a sum formula and the cell that is supposed to be the sum just keeps showing the formula instead of the total, what causes this or how can I fix this?

I suspect that you have accidentally pressed the Show Formulas icon in the Formulas ribbon.
