I have some hand written data sheets that need typing in to excel for analysis. Is there a way for me to read the numbers out and they get populated on an excel sheet?

You might try using Word's dictate option. I tried and it works reasonably well in understanding numbers. But you'll have to find a way to separate them before you can actually paste them in Excel somehow. Tip: if you say "Next line" Word will insert a carriage return.
